zee_werp Posted April 23, 2006 (edited) OK my girlfriend just emailed me these pics and I am gobsmacked. Her giant prickly pear bush has thrown off a mutant paddle....starting off as a paddle, and morphing / mutating into a fruit!!! I thought some of you might find it kind of groovy! Gunter Posted April 23, 2006 No kidding? Any seeds in that thing?
zee_werp Posted April 23, 2006 It's for real, no photoshop etc. Don't know about seeds, we haven't opened it up yet. I would assume so though, the other fruits on it produce seeds. I'm gonna take it along to the local cactus and succulent club meeting on Tuesday night cause someones doing a talk on opuntias...then we might open it up to look for seeds. Is it best to just wait till it dries out and splits open for seeds or will it be ok for us to just cut it open and scoop em out?
Gunter Posted April 23, 2006 I'd let it dry a bit, but once it is ripe if is has seeds they should be ripe. I have read about parthenogenesis, but this seems more than that...?
faslimy Posted April 24, 2006 Woa, that blows my mind can you imagine that happening to a trich?
zee_werp Posted April 24, 2006 I vaugely remember something either here or at another forum a few months ago about something similar happening to a trich. I think it was a flower bud turning into a pup. Hopefully someon has the link?

userofthename Posted May 27, 2006 Wow Zee! That looks fantastic. Try to root it! I saw an opuntia mutant with fruits which never matured and shot new fruits out of them. 3 or 4 green fruits one growing from the other.
