Naja my favourite apples are: Coxs orange pipin love it very distinctive taste, doesnt produce a lot of fruit a will holds the fruit longer than any other. Fruits late. Sturmer pipin principally baking/cider apple but can be eaten out of hand. A BIG apple and another late one. Become very juicy. Geeveston Fanny the original Tasmanian export apple that created the Apple Isle, there were hectares of em - no longer a production apple. Good eating, good storage - but fruit size is variable Lady in the snow (true snow apple). Produces heaps of little fruit, very white fleshed and sweet. Kids love em (and big kids). Also a very firm fleshed apple. Gravenstein is another I have eaten and enjoyed, and have found the odd random one around historic areas and have eaten and enjoyed but presume they came from random seeds planted (will be taking some genetics from a few over time) An important point as some varieties need more chilling hours than others to drive good flowering. To complicate shit there is a difference of when the trees can flower early/mid/late season. Need to consider this if you frost considerations. I tried a few varieties that I could get a lot of fruit off because they flowered early in the season. Cheers WB -

Look up Badger's Keep in Victoria, a huge range of apples for anyone looking for heritage varieties. Nursey is only open july-august, and reputed to have over 600 cultivars FYI. I grow a few of the old varieties down here WB Bob Magnus here in Tas . sells a few interesting apple cultivars as well -
