  1. Tomatoes pollinate before the flowers fully open, so self pollinate. Cross breeding can occur but is uncommon even when varieties are next to each other. Some say it doesnt occur, but I have seen it on rare occasions. To control cross breed tomatoes the flowers need to be pulled apart to access the stigma and styles for pollen transfers. You can cross breed them if you use some "divine intervention". However I you want to ensure genetic integrity then it is advisable to provide growing varieties during different seasons or provide a distance from others , or exclusion techniques like greenhouse etc. Link of interest : http://www.kokopelli-seed-foundation.com/tomatoes.html WB
  2. Hi folks, something worthy to bring to the attention, a quick rant elsewhere has made me thinks its worth throwing out there: Instead of me ranting here are a few interesting links, if anything the first link summarises it the best: http://www.tunacluboftasmania.org.au/member_news/35371.html http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/tasmania-bound-super-trawler-sabotaged/story-e6frg6so-1226411187181 http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2012/06/26/340271_tasmania-news.html and after the Feds crap on about marine parks they are going to allow the pillaging of migratory fish that drive these ecosystems across Ausralian waters.... 3. Collect as much heirloom vegetable and fruit as you can, produce seed and distribute it far and wide. Cutting out the competition is good for business it appears. I do not trust ANYONE involved in Australias Department ofAgriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) - who are the codex member contact organisation. why: The forestry sector here ran unsustainably, now is basically finished (but hey its the "greenies" fault...lol) THEN They are about the allow a 143m long supertrawler (read oceanic vacuum that is depleting fish stocks internationally) into Australias waters to pillage Tasmanian fish stocks to ship elsewhere. a snippet if you are not aware: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/tasmania-bound-super-trawler-sabotaged/story-e6frg6so-1226411187181 Fck you DAFF, and stick your Codex you bunch of puppets. http://www.daff.gov.au/agriculture-food/codex and Australia codex committees: http://www.daff.gov.au/agriculture-food/codex/committees#summary We will all be guerrilla grow food if we are not careful, since the codex fits within the PRODUCT INTEGRITY section WB

Its good to see some reflection on this, tis a pity it didn't occur on the day here.... A lot of boys did go to war, many for adventure - they didn't know what they were about to see and endure.

    DIY pipes

As an aside and since I had camera out at0m this may interest you, been a fairly ongoing project : the stone is serpentinite and the timber in huon pine. I usually work on it when I am feeling a bit down, it is good therapy.

Happy to squirrel away some rock as I find it at0m - rocks should be for free mate - but may hit you up for a bit of postage when I acquire a few you may be interested in . Will also look over some siltsone samples I have kicking about from old rock cores we discard after a while - they may be a bit fractured for finer carving though. Some others we have are just too hard to work (other than making unique drink coasters). I am sure you are always good I have a very small antler from a fallow deer in my shed, not meaty enough for a knife handle - but if you want to play with it at0m its yours (can send ya a pic).

MythBuster-Buster: "Plants can't feel" they say

Does the themostat "feel", and yes the definition of "feeling" should be defined. But I think we will all understand that will come come back to the human sense and understanding of the world around them (and also I add mostly biased by a european view of the world). My "murder" comment is tongue in cheek....my sarcasm is sometimes missed. If you view plants as just biological machines, then that's your viewpoint. It also comes back to what is the "higher" lifeform does it not?

I may be able to find a few suitable rocks (softer) in my travels at0m if you are looking at a traditionally styled calumet. I will keep my eyes open when out in the field if you like. I am a "rockhound"...lol Could make a few bowl types to attach to the pipestem, will also allow a larger range of timbers to be used. Can't beat bamboo though...Have made a few with stone bowls for mates as gifts using blue-lace agates, petrified manfern and one from a large piece of darwin glass (http://en.wikipedia....ki/Darwin_glass ) for some stunning tobacco pipes with great aesthetic appeal. If you were to look at this avenue, a Dremel rotary would be the shit (http://www.dremel.co...es/default.aspx) - also good for woodwork due to a range of mini tools that can be used. (I love my Dremel). If you are a good lad at0m I might make you a special one for xmas

MythBuster-Buster: "Plants can't feel" they say

you may need to spend some time with plants then.... The nervous system is powered by cellular and chemical reactions (to make you happy SYNer ). It just a more complex system than the tropisms and hormonal reponses made by plants (or microbe or fungi as other such examples) My view is vegetarianism is "murder" just as equal, just no blood on your hands..... Its a living thing and you kill it.... EDIT - My twisted point of view which I will add is based on my indigenous background...so call me simple if you like
