    Orange at base of Cereus!!?

to me it looks like a normal depigmented section from where the cutting has previously been under the soil and the rain may have moved the soil away and exposed that area or something, orange rot looks a bit different to me. someone may correct me, but i wouldnt be worried.
  2. i think barring cash transactions from the trading forum all together mightn't work the best, but larger/bulk buys and more commercial things do seem to fit into the classifieds well. it seems that is sort of how it has already worked its self out, but a few more things could be there instead of the forum and i think with some time people will start posting more appropriate things there. overall i like i the features and look (apart from the current colours, but that isntr a big deal. will be magical when they are sorted going back to nice colours), feels more streamlined or something, easier for me to use. also, although i used to like the ability to 'neg' bad posts i have noticed far less fights going on since they have been removed and feel that may be for the best after all

    The latest graphics (gaming rant)

if you start from catacomb 3D (1991) you can maybe wait 'til next year to see a better 5 year improvement, i don't really believe it will be too significant though, seems the average gamer cares more about online options and in-game physics than anything else these days. when we are able to game as a photorealistic counterpart of our-selves i will be impressed, until then...

The US schools with their own police

wow, thank god i didnt go through schooling in todays texas. seems crazy. you'd be balls deep hepatitis and ss bolt tattoos and some stupid race gang before you were 15 (assuming statistics i have read about U.S prisons are accurate). i don't see how that is good for a state...
  7. there are some pretty young blackwoods around my area (there are only 6 wattles endemic to my area, all pretty easy to differentiate) that already have some pretty gnarley bark but it may be environmental that they are like that so early, i'm not sure, so it could be that yours are just at an earlier stage of development. blackwoods also have a habbit of growing really straight and tall, which may be an easy way to differentiate it from others from that suppliers stock list, as yours appears to be growing rather straight up
  8. acacia melanoxylon i believe has rough bark. acacia implexa (lightwood) is similar in appearance and often co-existing but with a smoother bark surface (like yours has), both grow as comparatively large trees for australian acacias. i'm not quite up to the acacia knowledge of some, and as such won't even try to suggest what your plant may be, but i hope my information was still helpful. dionysus
  9. that first paragraph seems a little weird to me, particularly "with those in wealthier countries most likely to do so". really? i thought people in less wealthy south america made use of drugs often considered illicit (cocaine, mescaline, DMT etc), i thought people in parts of africa did the same (cathinone, ibogaine etc) and they surely could not be put amongst the wealthiest countries. maybe because those countries don't take away their peoples freedom and do not consider these plants 'illicit' means that they do not make the statistics.

    local botanical gardens

well, the gardens were first started in the 1800s with a large herbarium (now gone) and at that time they planted some giant redwoods which are now pretty giant (although no where near the size of those american monsters) and the rest of the gardens are fantastic in both health and range. their salvia garden is particularly good, with pretty well every known cultivar/species in the garden somewhere (apart from divinorium of course) the aroma on a warm calm day is amazing. i just think cacti isn't a big interest for anyone currently employed there, as they do do a lot of good for everything else. the one thing they don't have though is carnivorous plants chef_, that would be a cool collection. i agree PD when you say it seems they have a good range of echinopsis, because they pretty well do (although, only of columnar types), but they have the space to have more. from memory, at the moment they have 2 austrocylindropuntia vestia, 2 cereus peruvianus, 1 opuntia macriebtra, 1 Werdermannianus, 2 cuzcoensis, 2 pachanoi, 1 spachiana, 1 TBM and 1 globular echnipsis which is great, but then they have 15-25 golden barrel cactus (not even variating for the occasional red barrel or something...) and 10-15 terschekii. the amount of terschekiis and barrels compaired to everything else seems to highlight visually how much more could be there. especially considering near by there is a cacti-only nursery that sells almost anything imaginable apart from trichs. i say i think that particular cacti was stolen for drugs as i think i remember reading a local paper article about it, and it was just snapped near the base (now putting up some pups luckily) and taken. also a cereus peruvianus monstrose was taken by the same people aswell as nearly killing their really young red leaf catha edulis plant (that got me really worried, i didn't want that newspaper article to make more kids go in there looking to steal but they still have their catha and it is looking pretty healthy these days so i guess all is good) i just really want to help them bring their cacti section up to the awesome standard the rest of their garden is in. they are the first thing you see when you walk in (albeit a slight distance away) and i reckon it would make the place if they too were spectacular. lol @ bush turkey, school excursions down to see the local bush must be enthralling for the kiddies

    local botanical gardens

today i thought i would go down to the botanical gardens to see if any cacti were in bloom, and i was pretty disapointed with what i saw. i had just missed there enormous trichocereus spachianus flowers but there werdermannianus had bloomed last night it looked like and there lone globular echinopsis and lone opuntia sp. were flowering along with some barrel cactus. what i was disapointed with, though, was the poor state of health a lot of the cacti were in including the opuntia having severe black rot on several limbs, most columnar echinopsis/trichocereus including the flowering werd. and some cuzcos, a pc pach, TBM and some terschekiis were all a horrible sickly yellow colour and had pretty bad damage over a lot of them and the lone non pc pach or peruvianus they used to have looks to have been stolen for drug use by someone, which got me down. another thing i was a little disapointed in was the diversity of there plants, pretty much all being golden barrel cactus or T.terschekii, even though they have what seems a beautifally landscaped place for a great cacti collction. when i arrived home, i emailed them and informed them of my slight disapointment and made a few recomendations and even offered to volunteer there to look after them myself and source some more diverse cacti for them incuding really spiny/impassable ones to surround any potentially stolen and abused cacti from theft. i hope they let me volunteer, i see a lot of potential from there space. dionysus

Richard Branson: Time to end the war on drugs

i suppose the US could still try and detain you without trial as a space terrorist. at least it seems a lot of socially higher ups and more respectable types are acknowledging that putting otherwise innocent people in prison (or worse in some places) for taking part in some form of drug use is silly and at the very least causes a lot of people to feel alienated by and not trust the governments and police who in theory should be serving us. thanks for sharing the article qualia

    merry christmas everyone

although some (many) of you, including myself, may not be so wrapped in the idea of Christmas it is still a great opportunity to catch up with friends and family and have a generally good time, so, i wish all here the best of good times as we are very worthy of a happy solstice period. go easy on the egg nogg dionysus

    Acacia seed giveaway

wow, in the short time you've been back you've supplied the people with a new (and awesome) crested trich variety and shared one of the rarest (if not the rarest) acacias there are, kudos man. the community is no doubt extremely grateful

    Help this specimen flourish!

looks to be a lophophora willamsii var caespitosa the pottinx mix you described should suffice, but i would personally add an equal part coarse sand for a bit better drainage and a little bit of crushed lime never goes a stray for added celcium, loph's are said to benefit from celcium. loph's shouldn't be watered through the cooler dormant months and watered when needed in the warmer months, waiting for the soil to fully dry and then a couple extra days before watering again. i have used a variety of low nitrogen liquid fertilizers in half strength dilution with no damage, approx. once a month in summer. low nitrogen is key, though. in the wild, loph's tend to grow around the base or under the folliage of slightly larger shrubs so a well lit area where the cacti recieves diffuse light for the afternoon and full sun for the morning is somewhat ideal. good luck, a nice plant you have,
