    Australia Day / Invasion Day

tomtom: I can relate to being sick of feeling guilty. The thing is, I'm not saying we should be feeling guilty for what happened in the past. We should be guilty for what is happening in the present! Things are still very fucked up for many aboriginal people! It has continued unabated since colonization in 1788. It is a national disgrace that not enough is being done to help them. If anything I sometimes wonder whether John Howard deliberately refused to apologize so as to draw attention towards that controversy and away from the fact that the oppression of aborigines is not just a thing of the past. 2benubee : I dunno, I just got back from living overseas for 4 years. I did indeed come to the realization that there are some things about Australia that I miss, that aren't possible elsewhere, or at least, not in many places. But on getting back here I'm reminded of how fucked up many things are also. The main things I missed were the bush and natural environment, and (related) living space -- a backyard, a relatively deserted nearby park, etc. (I lived in Amsterdam, extreme population density). On getting back I remembered, yeah that's right, Europeans have completely fucked our natural environment and I have to drive for hours to find a tiny patch that even remotely resembles a shadow of its former self. And likewise, full of hope to buy a house and a backyard for my baby daughter to play in and my plants to grow in, I found that the Great Australian Dream is no more, that even on an above average income I am miiillles away from being able to even get a mortgage for a house & land in the greater Sydney area. And even if I did I'd be locked in to working full time for 30 years and being an absentee parent. It's just fucked up, all due to the inflation of land prices, driven by personal greed of property speculators. Plus there's the issue of the aboriginal people. Your analogy is imperfect. If the anglo saxons were still largely alienated from the dominant culture, lived in despair, unable to go back to their traditional lifestyles and yet unable to find a place for themselves in the roman lifestyle, had a life expectancy of 20 years less than the romans, etc etc etc, then it would be accurate. People overseas know that Australian aborigines still have it tough, why do Australians themselves seem blind to this fact? When I lived in the Netherlands and told people I was from Australia, their main reactions apart from oh I have been / would love to go there, are, first of all concern or even revulsion on the treatment of aborigines (and asylum seekers), and secondly I also heard from two couples (one of which was a mixed Dutch/Aussie couple) that they were going to live in Australia but changed their minds because people there were narrow minded and bigoted... with which I could only agree ...

    love & pschosis ?

The reason this is so provocative is because madness is taboo. If anything the above should propmpt people to re-evaluate their perceptions of "mental illness", not of love, IMO. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of irrationality. Otherwise we'd all be computers.

Help me explain drugs and 'our world' to my father

heh cs and all this time I thought your hobby was "getting fucked up" seriously if you want to try & your father respects authority figures, that recent new scientist article is probably a very good start. Of course it's not completely accurate or in depth but the problem with all the really good texts is they're so far from anything he's experience before, he'll just dismiss it as druggy/hippy bullshit. You might also trawl the MAPS site & MAPS newsletters, most of their stuff has a ring of "scientific authority" to it without being written in inpeetrable scientific jargon. If he likes to read at all, Wade Davis' book One River might also be a good one... it's mainly about Shultes and Tim Plowman, and also about the author, all three of whom despite having an insatiable curiosity for the psychedelics and other psychoactives, also strongly espouses some of the values it sounds like your dad supports, i.e. being hard-working, respectful, educated, etc. It's mainly not about drugs but more about adventure in S. America so if you pitch it that way he might bite. finally get him to try some MDMA with you. [ 20. January 2005, 09:30: Message edited by: rkundalini ]

    positive opiate test ?

Hmmm I haven't watched many ... I did see the start of one where they were investigating the story about the woman who flushed an airline toilet and got stuck there, supposedly they had to land the plane to get her off, etc... the experiment they were rigging up was full of all kinds of holes that make it inconclusive, so I changed channels. Unless you are actually going to get a fat ass woman to sit on a real airline toilet seat, forget it. A bit of thought goes much further than a dodgy experiment. Outside air pressure at 12,000 m : 15 kPa Cabin pressure, equivalent to ~2000 m altitude: 75 kPa Differential pressure: 60 kPa Area of arse ~= 0.1 m2 --> Suction force ~= 6 kN, equivalent to lifting 600 kg so, on the face of it it seems possible, but think about it, all she'd have to do is pry a gap between her legs or so and the seal is broken, and off she comes. Plus, if she did get stuck, I'm not sure but I would think she would have had massive injuries given the pressure differential on either side of her anal sphincter... think about it! The same effect would be made laying on your back and sticking like several tons of weight on your abdomen. Think about what happens with one of those tubes of toothpaste with the flip top lids, if you squeeze them too hard.... Plus probably all her blood vessels would burst, massive bruising if not bleeding. hmmm got go eat lunch now [ 19. January 2005, 10:33: Message edited by: rkundalini ]

    nail to the head

I dunno.. firstly quick, clean cuts can often be relatively painless, I've often discovered quite nasty cuts (nowhere near as bad as this of course) that I didn't notice when they happened... and apparently people who get shot sometimes just notice a "wet" feeling and that's it. Plus, depending where it stuck there might not have been a lot of pain sensors around, e.g. there are none on / in the brain. Of course there are many in the gums and sinus but he did indeed feel pain there, but assumed it was just due to the impact.

I'm always a bit skeptical of numbers like that ... aren't they likely contiminated by the fact that they nearly always just test individual mushrooms? I'd much rather see them extract 10 or more dry grams of each part of each variety and work from there ... or is this being overly skeptical?

Yeah I think it's funny ... What I don't get though is how this is meant to increase lamb sales. Quite the opposite I would have thought.

"I'm a stupid brainless git with a beer gut," said Senior Cuntstable Biggun. "Young people of today are gettin edgamacated and that's a bad fing if you arks me. Some of them are cutting costs by reading up on the difference between silver and aluminium, and wrapping their turkey in al foil instead." Det-Insp Pop Pill, also of the division, said "One of the problems with beer is the term 'light'. My beer gut makes me look soft and squidgy when I am a rather insidious drunk." Police fear that revellers will be at risk over the holiday period. "One of the great dangers is that more and more people are picking up a six-pack. If everyone thinks that beer is made in some kind of pristine world, they're wrong. Vats of murky waters are filled with fungus and allowed to sit and belch out foul smelling fumes for days on end. Some of these crime groups are even putting tin cans around the end products."

Hmm it is a bit long for my slow translation but cutting to the chase, table 1 looks like this Flush | Part of Mushroom | Dry Weight of Mushroom .... 1 | Cap .... | Stem ... .... 2 | Fruit body .... interestingly the little mushies of the 4th and 5th flush were very potent. Table 2 you can work out, Myzel is mycelium. Table 1 is for a rice substrate, table 2 for malt agar. (Likewise photos 1 and 2) [ 18. January 2005, 09:38: Message edited by: rkundalini ]

    Wanted: active Trichocereus

I'm hoping to get my hands on some small cuttings (or even seeds) of some Trichocereus strains of known potency. I did a few experiments a few years ago with some peruivianus and (probably) macrogonus, that gave mild or no effects desipite using 800-1000 g fresh. These days I have a family and the time and mental space for experiments I have is limited and precious so I'd like to reduce the element of chance a bit. I don't have much to trade at this stage, perhaps I could send some cash to cover your expenses and the trouble.

God made the Tsunami coz he's a dick

Yeah I agree bluemeanie. These church ministers these days distance themselves from the concept of an interventionist God, or at least a vengeful God... so they're basically throwing away the Old testament, upon which their entire religion is based. So why bother holding on to all the other stupid shite as well? The wierd thing is, there do appear to be some Christian monks and even priests who have genuine religious experiences, so they know that this idea of some big ole grey haired man sitting upstairs pushing all the buttons is ridiculous. And yet, they perpetuate the myth in their "teachings" to churchgoers. I suppose they think that ordinary people can't grasp anything more subtle so they stick with that... why bother? may as well tell them that santa claus is real too. I suspect that all of this non-mystical side of christianity is just a big hangover from the days when it was created by the Catholic church for their own political purposes (social control). How these priests can have a religious experience and then continue to teach such crap is beyond me though... Planthelper ... I don't think Bush needs any drugs to explain his oratory powers ... his innate stupidity is all the explanation needed. The man is a complete moron. Unfortunately his puppeteers are dangerously intelligent and capable of programming a nation to vote for a moron. [ 14. January 2005, 10:58: Message edited by: rkundalini ]
  14. The main role of MAPS seems to be to support psychedelic research by professional researchers in conventional institutions. Are you proposing something like that? If so, possibly here is not the place to ask because almost everyone here is an amateur/underground/"unauthorized" researcher. If there are enough conventionally qualified and tenured people interested it would be fantastic to see happen. If you had more in mind an association of underground researchers, maybe that would also be good to see (although maybe it would just be asking for trouble) but it should possibly think about using a different name. Note, I have nothing against "unauthorized" researchers, they can probably achieve as much more more science than those that work within the system. I'm just making the distinction because the existing MAPS also does so, presumably because they wish to improve public perceptions about psychedelic drugs and avoid any possible association with illegality or counter-culture. They are using this strategy to try to give a basis for the mainstream acceptability of therapeutic use of MDMA and psychedelics. IMO any similarly named groups ought to follow a similar path or they might adversely impact MAPS' achievements in that area. Oh and by the way MAPS isn't US-dominated by design. They do regularly support and report on research in other parts of the world (off the top of my head there was an MDMA study in Israel, some ketamine stuff in eastern europe somewhere, some other stuff in Mexico, etc etc). Can clandestine chemists publish?

yeah unless you're a huge multinational (Borders). If you're anti-establishment, then you get raided (Polyester). You can check the "classification" (=euphemism for censorship) of any publication at the OFLC web site: http://www.oflc.gov.au/content.html?n=46&p=35 Btw sounds like some of you might have some background knowledge that would be really useful for the wikipedia article on Censorship in Australia ... I encourage you to contribute! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_In_Australia

Something I have always wondered about but never looked into (so excuse my ignorance) is, couldn't fungi relatively easily spread throughout the globe by wind currents? They are a similar size to nuclear fallout particles, which certainly does this. It may be unlikely but on timescales of thousands of years or so it seems almost inevitable, no?

    Sydney Free Seed Ring open!

Yes I was wondering the same thing. I guessed s/he was thinking of making a larger donation. In this case I would use it to purchase seeds or packaging material. But to clarify: absolutely, just $1 or $2 is enough !

  20. Had an interesting experience yesterday. Took some ergotamine for the first time (2 mg PO + 1 mg @ 30 mins), in an attempt to abort a migraine. It worked (although often they fizzle out on their own), but over the coming hours (especially after cycling for 20 minutes at moderate intensity) I felt nauseaous and light-headed and then came a cluster of feelings that were subtle but nevertheless distinctively reminiscent of previous psilocybin experiences. These were all body effects -- things like heavy limbs, stiff back, runny nose as well as other feelings I can't describe in words but nevertheless very familiar from the mushroom. Has anyone else experienced this on ergotamine or other non-psychedelic serotonergic drugs ? I nearly always get nausea with mushrooms (even on doses too low for visuals), and this has triggered "bad" trips for me on several occasions. I had always attributed it to a psychosomatic expression of fear. If it is actually a physiological symptom this could be quite a revolution in my tripping mindset (if I ever go back to the Netherlands where mushies are legal).

    fraud at ebay

and on the web site there's all sorts of unintelligible crap about matrix ("not" pyramid) schemes ... Gomaos, do others a favour and DO NOT retract your negative feedback! You say you're amazed he has positive feedback, but really, come on it must be all bogus. Put a harsh negative feedback on and leave it there. Spose it doesn't stop him from starting a new account though. Probably the only thing that would stop him of the OFT is not interested would be various scary perceived threats to his personal safety ...

re eucalypt domination, make sure you read reville's post ... it seems I was probably misled (by Flannery) with the 40,000 years thing and would hate to perpetuate it. Still, the conversion did happen at one stage, more likely several million years ago, still the considerations for Psilocybes (and woodlovers in general) probably apply.

ADHD cures.... how about not bombarding them from the age of zero with tv and advertising and bright coloured plastic toys that yell at you in an american accent and ten different daycare carers while you never see your parents because they're working 100 hours a week to pay off a mortgage between sleeping and taking you to the supermarket where 200 brands of brightly decorated tooth rotting shit are placed at kiddie eye level to push them into a life of manic consumerism between hours of working and hours of tv with 5 second sound bites showing them how the world is run by money hungry missile toting assholes which they must obey or perish? same goes for teen suicide and depression
  24. Well yep I have found that tricking the mind out of negative thought loops helps sometimes (presuming one still has the presence of mind to do this), as does pre-dosing with an anti-emetic (I prefer ginger ). ... but the point of my post was that I appear to have encountered proof that in my case the mushroom nausea really does have a physiological basis . To me this is exciting, as it will break one of the negative thought loops that amplifies the nausea and ruins the vibe of the experience in general. It went like I feel sick -> it's psychosomatic -> I'm a wussy scaredy cat who can't handle the mushrooms --- stress causes more nausea --> i feel sicker --> the loop continues ...
