  1. very nicely set out webpage! the photos are great, I especially like the anaconda and tarantula snaps :) my friends feel a bit hesitant about going doing the whole ayahausca tourist thing in south america as the place seems overrun with gringo. but your friends experience looks very authentic, thanks for sharing.

  2. An interesting discussion on millenarianism at Reality Sandwich:

Beyond the End of the World: Navigating our Personal Apocalypse

Every night billions of people dream and every week many millions of people seek out conscious visions by taking drugs, meditating, praying, fasting or drumming. If more than a tiny minority of these people interpreted their visions in a literal manner and were bold and dogmatic enough to encourage others to follow them, millenarian groups would be springing up every minute of every day. Similarly, if everybody took their dreams and visions literally and acted on them, the world would become a huge open air asylum or battleground. Therefore, it is apparent that what defines a prophet is not their visions, which are easy to obtain, but their arrogant assumption that their visions are of unique significance and that they should be followed by others. This may reflect the intensity of certain individuals' visions but it may also be connected with the pushy character of those who claim to be prophets.

    ...

If we take apocalypse to mean uncovering or revealing, I would speculate that 2012 will be remembered as a significant date. Changes in the external world are happening faster and faster, information about local events can be shared with the world within moments and human beings are more aware of themselves and others than they have ever been. I can be sure that apocalypse will take place in 2012 and beyond as I am aware that it is happening already - and not merely in the imaginations of fanciful millenarianists. It is happening in the minds of people all around the world as they become more conscious of realities and able to share these internationally.

(Part 1 of 4) tephen Hawking, the world's most famous scientific mind, hosts a four-part ultimate guide to the universe. 4. maybe in the Guide to Poisonous and Toxic Mushrooms part:

Amanita muscaria intoxication is not dangerous and is actually fairly enjoyable, just beware of dehydration.

    could be:

Amanita muscaria intoxication is not dangerous and is actually fairly enjoyable when properly prepared (see Amanita muscaria ~ "Fly Agaric" entry above).

    ?

edit: added (see Amanita muscaria ~ "Fly Agaric" entry above) part

  5. Should you put a caveat regarding proper preparation being required for amanita muscaria intoxication to be pleasant? As it currently reads it implies ingesting fresh amanita can be enjoyable which I don't think too many people would agree with.

Reading this guide makes me want to visit the americas and hunt fungi, you guys have so many cool mushrooms!

    :o

  6. jolly good mutant, jolly intriguing. it seems rather neglected in australia.

yes the psilocybes get most of the attention, for good reason based on some of my unpleasant experiences with amanita. as this thread has shown amanita requires a bit of first and knowledge of how to prepare it etc, and the tradition just doesn't exist here. given its historical significance in siberia, and possibly europe and north america, i agree its worth further investigation.

  7. yeah I heard a similar discussion on the history of the 2012 meme on the gnostic media podcast. I always took the 2012 and timewave phenomena with a grain of salt, as I always felt that they were created by the likes of mckenna to facilitate change in society at large, rather than be real prophecies of the future.

  8. I love psytrance but I think 90% of the songs in this thread are terrible, unimaginative and boring.

lol electronic music fans can be quite discriminating when it comes to genres.

check out Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music for a tongue-in-cheek breakdown of electronic music genres.

It's about 10 years out of date but still worth a look as the comments on some of the more obscure genres are hilarious. I especially like the Techno - VGM and Casiocore genres

  9. sounds like it's definitely worth the effort to prepare it properly.

Can i remind you guys this was my first time with this drug? So i realy cant elaborat based on past experiences because i havent got any :S

I think a first timers report can be quite valuable as its not tainted by tolerance or assumptions from past experiences. thanks for your report.

  10. Wikipedia: Valerian (herb)

In medieval Sweden, it was sometimes placed in the wedding clothes of the groom to ward off the "envy" of the elves.

I'll have to remember that one...

An unusual feature of valerian is that the essential oil of valerian root is a cat attractant similar to catnip.

    ...

Cat attractants might mimic the odor of cat urine, which is caused by 3-mercapto-3-methylbutan-1-ol (MMB)

    yummy.

  11. hey kalika

i can't comment on those books myself as i have not read them, though i have read detailed rebuttals to the points they put forward by andy letcher in his book "shroom: a cultural history of the magic mushroom". i met andy at a conference on psychoactive culture in london around christmas time. he is a pretty cool guy.

anyway point is i highly recommend 'shroom', it's a great book (no relation to that awful looking horror movie...) if you're looking for the truth. but if you want to believe all those conspiracy theories about mushrooms i would avoid it because it pretty much blows them all out of the water.

again there is the possibility andy is wrong, and as i said i haven't read allegro or rush or wasson, but the important message to take out of this is that you can't believe what you read in books. if you want facts, you have to go to the actual science; journals etc. that being said shroom does appear to be pretty well cited for a popular science book. perhaps i should read those others, then re-read shroom, then i will have a more balanced view of both sides of the stories. for now however, i am forced to err on the side of rationality and sadly believe almost all the theories put forward to those three authors to be wishful thinking at best, and blatant history-alteration for personal gain at worst.

thanks frank, I'll definitely have to read Andy Letcher's book next. Sounds interesting:

Is Santa Claus really a magic mushroom in disguise?

Was Alice in Wonderland a thinly veiled psychedelic mushroom odyssey?

Did mushroom tea kick-start ancient Greek philosophy?

So I guess he answers no to these questions then? Guess I shouldn't fall under Allegro's spell before I read these other opinions.

Either way, I'm keen to hear more about Ubza's amanita experience as there is so much conflicting information regarding this mushroom.

  12. maybe try making tea out of valerian root instead of pills. I find the process of making the tea, letting it cool and drinking it very relaxing. It doesn't knock me out but I find a small amount of valerian helps me relax enough to get to sleep without any side effects the following day.

edit: only problem with valerian tea is your house mates will think your insane for drinking such a horrendous tasting and smelling beverage. I dunno, it tastes fine to me.

  13. I fast for 6 or 7 hours before a mushroom trip so that my stomach is empty and the experience will come on as fast and as hard as possible. If I eat say 30 minutes before then take the mushrooms, the effects take up to 2 hours to come on, whereas with fasting its more like 30 minutes. I eat lots of food towards the end of the trip to "turn it off" and help me sleep - something about having food in the stomach taking blood away from the brain maybe.

Mushrooms are an interesting case though as they themselves are a food and quite nutritious. When eating fresh mushrooms taking them is like a meal in itself - perhaps the mushroom is designed this way to give the recipient everything they need for the journey. One certainly couldn't say this about LSD.

I think gastric discomfort has a lot to do how healthy your diet is and what you have in your stomach at the time of ingestion. I wouldn't be surprised if following an ayahuasca dieta would remove almost all gastric discomfort from any psychedelic.

  14. in simplified terms i think something is psychedelic if it goes with acid or resembles an acid trip

I would say for me psychedelic music is music that is inspired by the psychedelic experience generally, not necessarily just LSD - although I understand why you say this as LSD has probably been the most influential psychedelic in the contemporary music scene. It's great to listen to a track and 'feel' the psychedelic state of mind through the music - music can be a very powerful tool for conveying ideas that are otherwise ineffable.

on some level everything is psychedelic

    most definitely :)
