    Hi there

hi hoot, welcome! thanks for sharing your experiences, I'm sure many people here can relate to some extent to what your going through. sorry to hear you are having such a difficult time in Brisbane mate. I can understand what you mean about Brisbane being an unfriendly place at times, there is a bit of a conservative/redneck streak amongst the people. But I found West End to be a great mecca of alternative culture and attitudes... you certainly wouldn't be out of place walking down Boundary St without any shoes, probably 10% of the locals do! There is a strong community vibe with the saturday markets, festivals, and friendly locals that is difficult to find elsewhere in the city. Although I haven't gone through schizophrenia, I have had quite severe depression and anxiety in the past. In my experience I had to remove myself from the environment that was causing me the stress, namely my job and sharehouse I was living in. Along with regular exercise and a healthy diet, a healthy sleep pattern began to resume and the anxiety started to diminish. For me good natural sleep (ie without sleeping tablets, weed, booze, kava etc) was the key to my recovery. seems to be something about deep REM sleep really healing and re-energising your soul. the world can seem a dark and twisted place when you aren't getting enough quality sleep... everything and everyone seems pitted against you. hang in there mate, try and stay positive and the world around you will respond accordingly.

    Eating Amanita muscaria?

eaten fresh they taste pretty good, but the stomach ache is not worth it. the flavour changes when dried, not for the better in my opinion, but the stomach ache is not so bad. haven't tried boiling them.

    QLD Cube season

the paddocks I pass by from time-to-time have produced some cubes this spring/summer, but not as many as last year. the torrential rain probably drowned alot of the mycelium that had formed in the run into summer, with the occassional well sheltered cow pie producing any fruits. I would say you have just had bad luck with location and timing. its really fascinating to see how these fungi respond the changing climate through the seasons. depending on geography and the type of vegetation in the area different fields will fruit at different times, IME.

    visiting Tasmania

hey guys, going to make my first trip to tassie soon. I'm a pretty keen hiker and would like to know some nice places to visit. also would love to see any aboriginal sites. How accessible are the National Parks in the south west of the state? cheers.

    an ID, please

if they are the ones like this I know around brisbane... they tend to grow in cow manure, usually a good indicator for the right conditions for cubensis, but are more prolific. not sure of the species. not active IME. photo of a cube (bottom left) and this mushroom (top right) growing together:

thanks mate... need to work on my photography a bit though, too much exposure or something in some of the shots. actually I got the boat which was a nice alternative to flying - when I was in indonesia a local guy I met said "man I would never get a plane anywhere, I feel much more at home on a boat no matter how long it takes!". that inspired me. leaving devonport habour at sunset is a pretty amazing experience, very beautiful with the mountains, moon, and ocean everywhere.

    Tasmania fungi

here is some fungi fotos from a recent trip to tasmania (working on the ID's). this island is a fungi paradise, my camera battery ran out before I saw the huge mushroom 'gardens' along the south coast track... literally hundreds of 15cm+ fruits scattered in close proximity. all photos are from the south coast track, which is between cockle beach and melaleuca. had my eye out for subs, but didn't find any... all help ID'ing is welcome! (massive bolete, cap was about 30cm across) (purple mushroom in a tree hollow)

    Tasmania fungi

yeah would love some help ID'ing (edited first post) - thanks NSF for that one. this specimen looks slightly different to the photos of Phlebopus marginatus on wikipedia, with a whiter cap and slightly reddish tinge on the pores underneath (although mine is probably starting to decay). here are some additional pics - was really hard to get a good angle, so the pics are pretty vague for ID'ing...

    visiting Tasmania

was an amazing trip, freycinet peninsula and the south coast track were the highlights. the people are very friendly, and the wilderness is... well, wild! here are some photos I took, to encourage others to make the trip down south! check out the mushroom pics in the fungi forum too. shorebirds at freycinet peninsula: first penguin I have ever seen... unfortunately dead: wineglass bay: south coast track: (site of aboriginal rock carvings at deadmans bay) (the flight out of melaleuca)

    visiting Tasmania

thanks for the info guys, thats the 3rd recommendation I have had for cockle creek so I'll be pencilling that one in for sure. only going for 10 days so more keen to do a number of 2 or 3 day hikes than the full overland track or south coast walks. looks like such a beautiful and unique part of the world, cannot wait! the Museum of Old and New Art looks amazing too, will have to check that out. guess in the end I'll just start driving around and see what comes my way, let randomness be my guide... a coffee (or tea ) sounds great obtuse, will get in touch.

    Canberra cube season?

do you mean subs? cubes are a copraphillic tropical species so wouldn't expect them to grow near canberra.

    Victorian Feb 2011 humidity

yep I was hiking through the yara state forest just north of the Latrobe river, towards starling hill. there are walking tracks and fire trails all through that area. for a state forest it is really beautiful area, although many of the taller trees have been logged out. when I get positive ID's I will upload to fungi map for sure. definitely go for a hunt this weekend, make sure you take your camera! bon chance

    Victorian Feb 2011 humidity

this queenslander been doing some hiking in victoria and snapped these fungi in the yarra ranges over the last week (after all the rain on the weekend): first time hunting in vic so not really sure of the species. were a few others I didn't get photos of, some of which in hindsight look very similar to photos of subs on this forum... is it possible they could fruit in feb? is it just the moisture they need, or are the cool temperatures also needed for them to fruit?

    Acacia Floribunda

what acacias are known to have a low cyanogenic glycoside content? would it be unadvisable for one to make a brew from maidenii phyllodes to test potency (in the absence of extraction apparatus)?
  24. the other night I found myself in some sort of hippy ranch, in a dream, a place that I have dreamt of before. sitting on a hill with many others in a festival type atmosphere, a guy pull out a bong and asked if we would like to smoke some DMT. he put two big yellow crystals in the cone piece with weed and offered it to me. I asked how much was in there and he said 75mg... I got scared and said 'no way man thats too much!'. I wonder what would have happened if I had said yes... has this ever happened to anyone else?
