  2. Sounds like it might have been candida, especially after oral sex. White spots and patches in your mouth and/or throat. No amount of penicillin, chili, etc. will get rid of that, as it's a fungus. TIL that some varieties of Acacia are effective against candida albicans...
  3. Interesting that the factors or constituents which give Manuka honey antibacterial properties are still not well understood. Hopefully this study leads to some effective drugs against MRSA. I find it strange that the article suggests that honey has evolved... perhaps they mean that bees which produce the honey (and perhaps also the plant matter the honey is made of) has evolved to produce honey which resists spoilage. For example, the protein bee defensin-1 which bees add to honey when they make it. You know, when they barf it up. Yuuummm....

post your nature pic & be rewarded

Nice thread, there are some awesome photos here! I'll contribute... Booroomba Rocks, Namadgi National Park, ACT. It's a popular spot for rock-climbers. While you can't make it out in the photo, you can see most all of Canberra in the far distance in the top left. Would be an awesome sight at night with a clear view.

    Ticks in my yard

Holy crap, that's awful, dude! I'm very sorry to hear that. I won't recommend it any more -- it had worked for my dog in the past but he didn't get sick from it, so was probably just lucky...

    Ticks in my yard

Seconded -- ducks are unstoppable slug and bug eating machines. Otherwise, some Frontline ought to keep your dog tick-free for at least a couple of weeks at a time. Small price to pay to keep him/her healthy and happy...

got uni login for research journals??

There seem to be a few friendly academics on board (including myself) who are happy to oblige the odd request. Probably better than scamming the journals -- as expensive as they may be!

Hybrid -- sine qua non -- I don't usually like rap, but there's something about this French one which sounds great.

    Powerful Quotes

Cool thread. As a scientist, I like this one: "I would rather have questions that can't be answered than answers that can't be questioned." -- Richard Feynman Feynman was a famous physicist. This quote is in reference to those who refuse to have their beliefs challenged, like religious fundamentalists such as creationists.

Some very cool remixes of Kaya Project tracks. It's the full album! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrOlAAIbE8E

    EBAY HACKED [MASSIVE WARNING]

eBay are claiming it was just a server maintenance issue: http://announcements.ebay.com/2014/09/technical-issue-impacts-some-ebay-customers/ Who knows what really happened though, because last time they were hacked (large-scale), they took ages to admit it!
  15. Hi everyone, It's that time of year again when I roll the dice and test my luck with herb seedlings. I've been mostly successful with oregano, mint, thyme and parsley in the past, until they get caterpillars. And it's always the same type, and they eat all the god-damn leaves. Bright green squishy caterpillars. The thing is, while I'd love to go into Rambo mode and spray pyretherin everywhere, I'm unsure I'd like to be eating this stuff myself, much less other non-organic pesticides. Can anyone recommend an effective/safe alternative? I've already tried a mixture of soap, water and finely chopped birds-eye chilies which I let infuse for a while before spraying. Using this did seem to work for a while (and I can personally vouch for it's strength -- don't spray this downwind -- ), until the plants were invaded by more sneaky hellbugs (although it seemed to keep aphids away, at least!). It probably just made the plants tastier and/or the caterpillars very angry...
  16. Hmm, I'll look into whether or not it's safe to eat, or if it just isn't in common usage here -- by the look of it, it's been used in Asia for some time but little elsewhere. ps. I just found this thread with links to lots of info and even e-books...!

Awesome thread, looks like lots of effort went into getting this info, thanks hookahhead!

    Green pesticides

Whoops, I just created a similar thread... I've tried hotter chillis (birds-eye) but without the tobacco, which seemed to work for a while, but wasn't as good as pyrethrin. I'm hearing that neem might be a good alternative...

    Black Portuguese Millipedes, control methods

Has he tried carbaryl? It's supposed to be effective against those critters, but it's toxic.

    Black Portuguese Millipedes, control methods

Same, except instead of millipedes, I've seen swarms of ladybugs covering a radar tower pole in Canberra. Pretty odd, nothing for them to eat up there! Maybe it's a sexy-time thing...
  21. Is this because the pyrethrin is broken down enough by then so I can eat the herbs safely? At that point, shouldn't I need to re-apply it? Can do for cuttings which I can dry out in a container, but for fresh herbs, hmmm...
  22. Hey thanks, neem looks interesting...
  23. Haha... But, is it safe for me to be eating? I've already quit smoking!
