    Recipes

    Loving the sound of these recipes. WIll definitely try them, especially those "Halcyon Daze Hot Mash Slammers" ;-) That chicken soup also sounds awesome. There's nothing like making your own stock. Here's a couple of dessert recipes I love. They're hardly healthy, but they're fine in moderation ;-) I can't take credit for them, they're from the 'net, but they're both amazing and dead easy... Lemon Slice It's basically the same as the one at the end of the link on taste.com, but it's simpler than you might think. I like this one because it doesn't require you to cook anything. Base: 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk (you can buy it in tubes at Coles instead of cans) 100g butter or margarine 200g Granita biscuits (they come in packets of 250g, so you can eat a few while you cook ;-) 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 lemon rind, finely grated Icing: 2 to 3 cups of icing sugar 40g butter, softened 1 lemon, juiced 1. Blend the Granita biscuits into fine crumbs with a food processor, then mix through the coconut and 2 tsp of lemon rind in a large bowl. 2. Grease a tray (at least 2cm deep, 15cm x 25cm) and line it with Glad Bake non-stick so it overhangs the edges. 3. Put the 100g butter in a microwavable cup, and grease the inside with it. (This helps the sweetened condensed milk from sticking.) Then add the sweetened condensed milk, and heat in the microwave for 45sec on high or just until the butter has melted. Add it to the biscuit mix and stir through well. 4. Push the biscuit mix into the pan evenly. I use a potato squasher to get it flat :-) Put it into the freezer for 30 mins, or the fridge for an hour or more. 5. In another bowl, combine 2 cups of the icing sugar, 40g softened butter (microwave again), and half the lemon juice. Stir it well -- it should be a hard lumpy mix. If it's too hard to spread, add more lemon juice. If it goes too soft, add more icing sugar. Repeat until you get a smooth consistency you can spread onto the biscuit base. Spread it over once the base has finished cooling, and refrigerate for another 30 mins. I like to cover the top with more coconut and lemon rind :-D 6. Once it's done, you can lift the whole thing out by carefully lifting it by the Glad Bake, then chop it into squares. Awesome. Flourless Almond and Orange Cake This is a famous Jewish one from Food Safari, and is good if you want to make something that is dairy and gluten free. It's easier if you have food scales for this one. It's also a bit expensive, as the almond meal isn't exactly as cheap as flour... but hot-damn, is it ever worth it. Ingredients 2 oranges 
 6 eggs
 250g caster sugar
 250g almond meal
 1tsp baking powder
 Extra caster sugar for dusting before baking
 Icing sugar for dusting after baking
 Margarine or oil spray (for greasing the pan) 1. Wash oranges and place unpeeled (as they are) in a pot of boiling water for 2 hours. Make sure the water doesn't boil away and that the oranges are mostly covered the whole time (otherwise they will burn!) Drain the water and allow the oranges to cool. This can be done ahead of time. 2. Preheat oven to 190°C. 3. Use a food processor to blend the oranges into a puree. 4. Break 6 eggs into a mixing bowl or blender. Add caster sugar and beat or blend together with a blender or by hand.
Add the orange puree, then the almond meal and baking powder. Mix well. 5. Grease a 20 cm spring form baking pan (one with the clip on the side and removable base) with margarine (or vegetable oil spray) and dust with caster sugar. 6. Pour the mixture into the pan and sprinkle caster sugar on top and bake for 1 hour to an hour and a half or until the top is golden brown. It might look like it's burning, but it will be fine - it goes quite dark when it's cooked. Dust with icing sugar to serve. This is amazing served with thick double cream... ARRRRGH, CALORIES AHOY!!!!

    The dumbing down and degradation of art

    Just had to chime in to say that video/music by Yosi Horikawa was fantastic, thanks for linking it. On a more topical note, I don't think I agree that TripleJ doesn't have much to offer -- I agree that some of the stuff they have in high rotation throughout the day is a bit overdone/under-inspired, but it does appeal to the majority, and I like how they mix in unearthed stuff. That's not to say that it's all bad -- programs like the Sound Lab often play an amazing array of stuff from new and interesting artists, if you're into electronic. It's just a pity it's not on while I'm usually awake, but then again it doesn't appeal to everyone which probably explains the late time-slot... fortunately, you can stream/save the stuff as MP3s for later with a bit of nous

    This is very clever stuff... just like how scientists can isolate pheromone chemicals from insects to build effective traps. Things like these that are non-toxic to the environment (as opposed to pesticides) are awesome...

    What are your ethnic origins?

    Interesting thread... My father's side is English as far back as we can trace, and my mother's side is Aussie up to British convicts sent to Tassie (on her mother's side), as far back as 7 generations. Mum's father's side (my pop) is Aussie as far back as 3 generations away, but then we're stuck. We suspect, because he had a very dark skin complexion, that it's partly indigenous Australian (or less likely, Spanish) at some point, but we're still trying to figure it out...

    I've seen a few weird things in my time, but strangely one of the weirdest things that springs to mind are the 'toons by John Kricfalusi which I watched as a kid.     Me too, some years ago. But after thinking about it for a while, I think what I saw was smaller than a Tassie Tiger, so was probably just a numbat.... It has a striped back just like this, and I don't know of anything else which looks like it....

    ROFL that's awesome. Couldn't agree more... when I had only just started trying out herb years ago and my tolerance was very low, and I'd hit three or so cones in the space of 10 mins, I was struck blind (literally) for what seemed around 10 mins. My friends took me to sit in the lounge to recover and eventually I did, and it was the strangest feeling -- when I'd realised that my vision had came back, I had a feeling that I had been able to see for a little while earlier, but had just 'ignored' it. A hard feeling to describe, but to begin with it was terrifying. It only ever happened that one time after I've overdone it...

    Hmm, are you sure resistance to 300 degC is safe enough? Take a look at this page on wikipedia which lists typical temperatures of various fires/flames - the coolest temperature listed there is the lit portion of a smouldering cigarette, which is about 400 degC, and where the temp jumps to 700 degC when drawing oxygen through it! Be careful with those glues...

    I suppose you could use a completely natural glue, like casein glue. I made this stuff in school, and it sticks wood together pretty well. Not sure about wood to marble, but it might be worth a shot, given the alternatives. It's supposed to be heat-tolerant too, but I'm not sure to what degree. All the ingredients of casein glue are natural, being based on milk protein, so I would expect that burning this off probably isn't toxic (though, as I'm not certain, don't take my word for it!).
