  1. when you've been messing with tracks for a while they become a blur.

    Ha! Tell me about it!

I've been mixing and re-structuring a handful of tracks which I intend to release as an album for the last eight months.

Mixing and re-mixing. Turning this up, and then down again. Taking that out and then putting it back in. Boosting the bass, then dropping it back....

The fact that I'm often inebriated while working on the PC doesn't help at all. So many times I've opened up a track after a long night of production and in the cold morning light I hear it and think,

"What the fuck was I thinking/hearing/doing?"

"Why did I boost the treble so much that it pierces my ear drums?"

"Why did I think it was a good idea to duplicate that already heavy bassline and overlay it in another channel so now all I can hear is the windows rattling?!"

    ..and finally...

"Why is there a pitted olive nestled between my volume sliders?"

Having said all that, I've actually had a productive 48 hours during which time I dug out some of my personal favourite tunes and polished them up a bit and.... will hopefully be putting some shit on Bandcamp in the next few days!

Woah.. sorry to totally derail your thread. I think I need to get some sleep now.

  2. Most and least? That's hard because they all have soemthing going for them.

I'm torn between the first and third, but I think 'Desert' just has something that immediately draws me in. If you're wondering about accessibility, I'd say Desert.

But House of Cyan is quite beautiful as well.

    Great tracks all up.

  3. wow they know how to take car of a man

Good to hear you're having a hell of a time. Most Thai people who I encountered during my travels there were very elegant and attractive, and if you've grown up mostly surrounded by white Australians, they can appear almost enchantingly exotic in comparison.

(Note: I'm not saying that one race is better or more attractive than the other in general, rather I'm noting a subjective observation based on my own experiences. Contrast and difference can be immensely alluring, IMO).

Anyway, I just wanted to have some fun with the part of your post which I quoted

I'm sure you meant to say that "They know how to take care of a man", but in missing the 'e' in care I think you may have uncovered a dangerous flipside to the good times that are on offer with short-term sexual flings: Some of those girls (and guys) can be mighty charismatic and if you spend some time with one and get a bit too enamored of him or her, he/she may just end up taking the 'car off the man'... as well the as house and any other valuables you have back home.

Sorry to be cheeky and a bit stereotypical, but I've seen it happen more than a couple of times!

Anyway, enough rambling from me. Have a great time Bigred! It's an amazing place and you can have all kinds of experiences there....

  4. Hmmm...these are "products" not "drugs" for a start

Yeah, when I saw that list this was the first thing I thought as well.

I don't get it. What are they banning? Names? Do they even know what is inside those brand name products?

Does that mean that whatever the active is in those products, is in fact not banned?

So, for instance, "Galaxy Ultra Nova" can become "Cosmic Super Explosion" and continue selling with the same shit inside?

  5. Thanks for the feedback guys!

Ajna, it's good to hear that you appreciate the cohesion of character. That's actually the second comment this week I've got regarding the notion of collection of tunes, and I find that encouraging.

And Bullit: That was a very good call... I looked up Sigur Ros and was immediately grabbed by the track BRENNISTEINN. I absolutely love the crunchy, heavy, and yet understated production of that track. Very haunting (as much as I dislike to use that word because it sounds like such a cliche) and beautiful.

  6. good advice is so helpful when using any drug. this kind of frank, non-judgmental conversation with your mates could be the difference between a sustainable hobby or a flatspin into the sea of unmendable.

I agree with what you say, Thunder.

The two most commonly known _ _ PVs are tricky to advise about, however, because IMO they represent the upper limit of what could be considered useful or sustainable.

A very short lived but VERY powerful high followed by a comparatively long and VERY unpleasant crash makes for something that has little functional application and a high abuse potential.

Telling people straight out not to do something never really works. It's hard though to find the words to describe what things like the PVs lead to and how incredibly hard it is to use them in any quantity without getting into trouble. While I believe there's a time and place for just about anything and everything, it's hard to say what justifiable space things like the PVs fill.

  7. Hi there all you creative types!

Feel free to have a listen if you are bored shitless and then heap upon me the praise, criticism, one-word-comments, or other such things that you care to!

I genuinely enjoy getting feedback no matter how blunt or subjective it is. It's interesting to hear how people respond to music.

We got three tunes of different types:

Shifting Fields: an ambient, slow(ish), thing..

    https://soundcloud.com/tepalom/shifting-fields

Ace of Motion: actually not a full track. More a concept sketch. I don't even know how to describe things in terms of genre anymore. Drum n Bass? Kind of?

    https://soundcloud.com/tepalom/ace-of-motion

    Faceless Friend: my favourite. electro/jazz/fusion/thingo.

    https://soundcloud.com/tepalom/faceless-friend

    Yay!

    Thanks for listening :innocent_n:

  8. Geez, Ghosty! A whole marijuana cigarette!! I'm glad you pulled through. I agree also that times have certainly changed for the better now with many LEGAL and therefore SAFE chemicals flooding the market. Finally, young people can easily purchase ultra-high-potency, microgram-active, mystery chemicals easily and thus don't have to resort to messing around with dangerous plants.

  9. Thanks, Ajna!

    I know you said:

there's something i cant quite describe, but i feel differently about this track than your others, and nothing against any of your other music intended

    - but I would actually be really keen to hear specifically what it is that makes you feel differently about this track versus my others, because you're not the first person to make that comment. A few friends who I played it to when I was making it responded to it in a much more immediate way than they ever had to my other tunes. They said "I like it!" without any hesitation or trying to find constructive comments to make.

I originally had no intention of posting the track because it just started as an experiment to see what my voice would sound like in a track, and if it would be possible to work more vocals into future tracks. The positive feedback I got from friends made me decide to put it online to see if other people would like it.

The good response from my friends was really encouraging as they can be pretty blunt at times and they're not into much of what I make. Those friends of mine are not musicians, however, and are generally mainstream music only listeners. I guessed that having some vocals just made it easier for them to handle because they only ever listen to "proper" songs - you know, with verse/chorus structure and full lyrics - none of this obscure, instrumental, synthetic, bloody 'art' music stuff!

But YOU seem to like this track too, and I know that your musical tastes are broad. Also, as I've stated before, I really like your music and would value your feedback very much. So if you ever feel inclined or if it just clicks in your mind about what makes this track work for you, I'd be curious to get some feedback from you about your personal, subjective opinion of the track.

  10. I made a tune which is a bit different from my usual fare - mostly because it actually has a few vocal samples for which I used my own voice.

I tend not to use vocal samples for a few reasons: I like all the contents of my tracks to be completely self created; I find it hard to rip/extract vocal samples cleanly; I'm slightly paranoid about copyright issues; and mostly because I'm just not a big fan of vocals in electronic music.

So this one is a bit of an adventure for me. Not sure if I'll follow up on it anytime soon, but if I do make another track with vocals I'll try to find something more meaningful than my immediate financial concerns!

  11. Do you want to create soundscapes?

Assuming that is the case (or close to the mark), what would you list as some examples by other artists who have achieved something like that?

Some albums/tracks which I have enjoyed and returned to over the years when I wanted to do some free-form visualisation:

    (Andy Partridge and Harold Budd)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SeG0AlxRkI (Robert Rich and Lustmord)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQIilAOcRUA (Steve Roach)

  12. Yeah, I really like Innermost-Outerspace. It's not easy to create a compelling soundworld.

I like some of Robert Rich's stuff and Steve Roach, but I find there's a fine line between creating a distinct soundscape which can gently draw the listener in and create a trance-like state, while avoiding making layers of shapeless textures which make the listener zone out. I feel that those two artist have been perhaps a bit too prolific.

Your track, Ajna, hits the right spot for me. I can tune into it without effort, but not zone out completely.

  13. Thanks for posting that, Psylo.

A few weeks back Psylo and I passed some bare bones tunes back and forward and tried collaborating a bit.

He was extremely patient in walking me through the basics of Reason 4.0 - a software package which is very different to the trackers that I've always used.

What started off as a fairly basic tune - a concept sketch, really - has turned into something pretty cool.

Psylo's the one who made it sound like it does now. He fleshed it out and added intricacies which almost makes it sound as if it's a piece being played by several musicians. It's not easy to get an organic sound from the confines of a limited DAW. I certainly learned a lot from the process.

  14. haha thanx dude yeah very bungle like aye ! thats not a bad thing lol!!

No, not bad at all. Consider that a compliment.

I have lots of great memories of listening to Mr Bungle.

The first time I heard that music was in high school, maybe around 1994? A friend played some for me on his walkman, but the batteries were low so it was kind of slowed down :P

I was just thinking about that friend of mine and wondering if he's still alive. Ever have those moments when you wonder how many of your high school buddies are dead?

    Sorry to go OT
