Apologies to all that asked for seed and received zilch. I've been ill and just come upon the remains of the fruit from which the seed was to come. To make up for the lapse I'll happily send a 1' spach cutting at my expense to anyone that asked for seed that I failed to send to. cheers, ed ps. pm me please

    Spach seed

Just walked outside for a breather 'cause it's bloody hot here still and smelt cactus flowers. Got eight or so flowers blooming that I hadn't even noticed developing. So I'll have a ton of T.spachianus seed in the next week or so. Pm me an addy if you're interested and I'll send some off. ed

  5. I've the designs somewhere for a ammonia-based solar refridgeration system. From memory it was pretty big (the solar part) around 12' long with a reflector several feet wide, but produced a large (exact size ?) ice-block daily. Definitely applicable to a domestic fridge situation, which is about all I can remember fact-wise. If anyone's interested i'll chase-up the file. ed

    Organite

I'm well aware of resonant frequencies in organic crystalline structures etc, and the affects/effects applying an EMF to them. Lots of things produce emf's, but few do so on such a level as to be visible. But the rest of your statement I'm not aware (or that sure, either - and that's as politely as I can put it) so would you please point me to a reputable source of proof for these statements. By reputable I mean as accepted by the scientific community at large, as opposed to some nutbag's theories Basic physics states that applying any force to an object will cause a reaction, but whether this would be "noticeable" is more open to conjecture. 4.5VDC @< 4mA is really pushing the "noticeable" bit, and would require decent quality instrumentation to even measure accurately, let alone to measure its affect on living tissue. It's not "so hard to believe that orgon would disrupt the processes of them, particularly the unicellular ones" if some proof is given, but to assume that this is automatically the case without such evidence is pure foolishness. And that's assuming that "orgon" does what it's inventor claims, which is a pretty big assumption from where I'm sitting. The "i rest my case" comment was in reference to all parasites etc being ionic, and that the baddies are -tive, whilst the goodies are +tive, and that the device somehow "introduces negative ions through the skin and into the body's living tissue". Again things I'm unaware of, and again would like to see a reference. As soon as I see science tied to metaphysics I become interested, and generally (actually always so far) find that it's an attempt to baffle people with bullshit. Just think how many working inventions (that are saleable) include a DIY versionwith instructions. Only people without any electronics knowledge would credit such, and those with wouldn't bother building a "magic box". ed

    Organite

OK , you got the sarcasm (not directed at you by the way, but at the marketers of such bullshit) Yes, they do describe how to make one, and it's a complete load of crap (I'm an Instrumentation Eng, and Electronics Tech). Do you understand their theory of operation? I've just written, and deleted, an accurate description of what this circuit actually does because indepth description would mean little to anyone without electronic schooling, and it's simplicity makes it's operation easy to see for anyone with basic skills in the field). A simple description would be: It turns a 4.5v battery (connected to some wires wrapped around rocks) on and off 20 times/second at a miniscule current so as to alloe it to run from batteries. For some reason this is good? I rest my case. ed

  11. You'd be surprised at what some forum members find acceptable in this regard. Do a search on acacia bark here, a heated argument about this usually erupts every year or so. Unfortunately the chemical we all talk of, which can offer such insights, also seems to turn certain people into some sort of evangelical drug-guru off on a god-given mission to alleviate the suffering of the masses via it's distribution (with or without $). The prevailing 'logic' they use is that the end justifies the means ie: it's worth killing 'x' amount of trees as long as a reasonable amount of end product can be extracted and given to 'x' amount of people, thus 'awakening' more of us dozing mortals and furthering the cause. The repeatedly pointed out fact that this can be done with little/no tree-damage falls on deaf ears, but that's what you get when you are silly enough to argue with a zealot. ed

    Black Death?!

If the rot is spreading this fast you need to cut *now* or you'll have nothing left in a few more days. Remove all rot, and *every* bit of soft flesh, then callous as suggested above. good luck, ed ps. if you lose it all let me know and I'll see what cuttings I've got atm and send you something (a bit of spach at least)

    Aurora Australis Phenomena

I lived on McQuarrie Harbour in Tas for a few years and they were often visible looking Sth (I was about as far Sth as you can go on the West coast). As WoodDragon said, they're not anywhere near as spectacular in reality as most photos suggest, and could at times remain unnoticed until you actually looked for the phenomena. Definitely worth seeing, but compared to a decent waterfall, enormous tree, clear mountain night-sky, etc, they aren't much in the breath-taking awe department. Sorry to be a spoil-sport ed

    The bushfire stupidity

I'm with PD re the arsonist theory (and I've actually had my place burned down by the First officer of the Zeehan CFA (who consequently was caught lighting/attempting to light fires in carports etc around town) so have no sympathy for such people. Lost everything I owned, and still (7 odd years later) find that i can't find something 'cause it got burnt' back then. And that's apart from shit that can't be replaced. The bush is dry as and there's tons of shit on the ground from recent floods/storms. Zillions of 'first causes' for such fires to occur. But T's making sense too. Funnily enough I've played in old "bomb-shelters" as a kid. Built in backyards from Melbourne to Mildura as a response to the bombing threat in WWII. Far less threat of japanese bombs ever hitting VIC, yet propaganda at the time made it seem worthwile. Chances of bushfire though, and no-one takes it on-board properly. Did a six-month contract at Winneke Water Treatment Plant, Christmas Hills, near Yarra Glen and consequently bacame part of the local CFA (job entails fire-training to a level surpassed by the CFA and, as such, made it pretty obligatory). At the time another fellow and myself spent a fortnight assessing local property access for fire-trucks and informing people that unless they widened driveway accesses etc we wouldn't come in (which was the (voted) concensus to *tell* people, although most members agreed we'd have to "have a go" if the shit hit the fan). This was fifteen years back, and the number of people retiring into the bush (you've a lot to answer for Sigourney) has increased enormously since then. A majority of these people hit outskirt towns for good price and access to big-town facilities with little knowledge of the problems that are inherent with bush-living. And people dieing from grass-fires is very sad and even more unnecessary. Simple training/preparation and these people would be alive. I've mentioned this before but couldn't recommend a site better to explain the horror of a similar situation in the '39 at Black Friday Fires. There are audio accounts from survivors and written reports from many more. Truly tragic, yet *should* have been a lesson worth learning. But people are fools, and it always happens to someone else. Tell them they'll be bombed in the desert and as unrealistic as it sounds, they'll build shelters, yet tell them a fire might start in the mountains and few people take heed. I've ivestigated (and cleared a few) dugouts still existing in the Vic High Country from prior to the '39 fires and they stay marked on my maps just-in-case. ed

    The ordinary-ness of "Eileen"

I'd forgotten about this (no slight upon you Michael). And thanks for that, as I have been feeling neglected lately (now I know why ). Perhaps you could make some obscure comment regarding something vaguely relating to me every now or then, just to cheer me up. Or you could just stop making comments on a non-factual basis re my cactus. ed

    fence

Definitely good form to ask first. As for the bloke with the knife, imagine if he caught you pilfering? With regard to legalities of overhanging flora, in Victoria the law has been (as long as I can remember) that if it's on your side of the fence you can remove anything over your property but must return the offcuts to the said neighbor. ed

    The ordinary-ness of "Eileen"

Ahhh, so you become offended when your word is questioned too Michael. Funny that. So you'll say whatever you like, without any evidence, and for whatever reason you choose, as you choose. Well I couldn't ask you to be fairer than that. Since you admit that your comments have no credibility I'll not be offended by them in future. Whom exactly do you regard as peers? You seem to dismiss all comments re Eileen made by Aussies, and by a lot of fellow Americans too. I have recieved ZERO neutral/negative feedback from recipients of Eileen, other than to comment on "how well she was going" from all around the world. A few people growing her in dry conditions have commented that growth-rate was normal per bridgesii, but still noted the shapeshifting quality which again I see as not "ordinary" The "concerned threads" were the ones that you commented in. I replied. And waited. And read other' replies. And read your next comment, but never had my queries answered (or any answer on the occasions when I was offering you cuttings years ago for that matter). Same old chestnut. I've made public comments about a plant that I have grown for twenty-odd years. You repeatedly suggest that my statements are false. I take exception to this. Since you've admitted that your opinions are not fact-related, i'll leave this argument here. ed ps found an interesting little snippet (that MSS hasn't bothered to mention in this thread) whilst reading one of the links by MSS's. This is a quote from him at "The Nook": post Sep 13 07, 08:38 PM GMT Post #46 My Eileen is but a small clipping still, and with my location and need for pot culture it is unlikely I'll be able to let it get big enough to ever flower.

    Australian Canning Jar Supplier

No need for anything more than a generic "chefcraft" (or whatever brand your local $2 shop/supermarket stock) clear plastic cylindrical containers (no neck). Come in assorted sizes, cheap as chips. I've used various types of these for years and all were excellent in seal, pc-durability, and contam-resistance over time (scratching). ed
