I don't care what culture, religion, or regional tradition this atrocity comes from; it's still abhorrant that a person should be punished for being raped. I'm too disgusted and ashamed of humanity to say anything more.

I was watching a show on Foxtel the other day and it was Joaquin Phoenix plus friend living with an Amazonian tribe for a week or so. When they first got to the village/community, the elders offered them a snuff blown through a tube by another person. Gee sounds familiar doesn't it? In any case they "told" the audience in the voiceover that it was a tobacco product. Bullshit it was just baccy.

I went through a drinking phase between 17 and 23. Then I just got sick to death of it. So many people become instantly irritating or irritable upon drinking one too many glasses or beers. I don't place majority blame on publicans and liquor outlets; I believe everyone has the ultimate decision on putting a substance in their own body. I hardly ever drink alcohol anymore, it's a once-in-a blue-moon thing.

I have two shirts, one with a disability sign and says "I'm only in it for the parking"; and another with a jovial man holding a meat cleaver saying "You can't have manslaughter without laughter." One mate has a shirt saying "if Jesus comes back we'll kill him again" and his wife has one about fat Americans (she's a fat American) but I can't remember what it says. After the Sydney Christmas bushfires in I think it was 2001, they made big noises about people doing things to help guard against massive fire damage. Clear litter around house, clear gutters, don't have too many (none-preferably) high-fuel trees near the house, etc etc. People have insanely short memories so perhaps they should be warned of it every year around late winter, early spring. You know what's fucked up? They tried to back-burn in 2002 and sooo many people kicked up huge stinks about fires being deliberately lit near them! Most of them have absolutely NO idea about the purpose of back-burning! Greater Sydney metropolitan area or not, the fact that too many people continue to ALLOW to be ignorant in the face of such disaster is deplorable. I'm not quite going to go as far as Torsten said and blame them all outright for being ignorant and lazy, we'll never know if there were good people who tried to do the right thing and were just victim to others' irresponsibility. There's also a hell of a lot of insanity regarding the cause of the fires too. So many people are saying flat-out that it's all the arsonists' fault. Well hello, this is Australia during summer. The air is dry and HOT, sometimes almost crackling with electricity in the air with electrical storms brewing around. It doesn't NEED human hands to start something so devastating. I think some of them are turning a blind eye to the randomness of nature. A human can be punished for this crime, mother nature can not. Some people need blood and for the blame to be removed from themselves. I only heard about all this on the radio last night on the way back home from a big party on Saturday so it was all pretty shocking to hear. Best of wishes to those trying to regain their lives and livelihoods. My condolences to those who have lost theirs. I hope everyone takes this harsh lesson so that it may never happen again.

I'm not quite sure what exactly you're disagreeing to? That she couldn't have known doing such a thing is a risk? Of course none of us at 17 are as savvy as now, but still, that's common sense to be careful on drugs. Especially ones that are so commonly touted as being unutterably dangerous. IMO REAL drug education covering ALL sides as most accurately as possible is the only way people are going to be able to have the best chance at making the best decisions. It would be silly to assume that even then nobody will abuse or misuse, but the people who don't want to die will have a far greater understanding of how to avoid that situation.
