    caapi in SA

Out of pure curiosity.... how large/old is it recommended to let a plant get before it's suitable to take cuttings... generally when I take cuttings I go by the rule of taking a piece approx the length of my little finger. Does this apply to caapi or does the girth play a big role aswell as my younger plant is still quite thin. Great thread! I'll have to start taking pics of mine aswell... I use to have a caapi cutting in a 1/2 wine barrel. I used clear uv-protected perspex around the outside of the barrel to protect the plant from cold winds and rain in winter and to contain any humidity i was able to create. Sadly that plant ended up dying on me due to a large shift in location [moved house] It was devistating to see her go but I saw it all as a great learning curve. I am currently limited by funds but am interested in investing in a large rectangular plantar box that I can enclose like a humidity dome using perspex with irrigation [kept around 24 degrees celsius using a fish tank heater with a temperature controller attached to keep the soil at a warmer temp in the colder months] with a hydrometer [to test humidity levels] and a front opening in the perspex [door] so I can still access the plant easily for fertilising/weeding/etc I am convinced that over time whether it be months, years or decades... a lot of plants can be adapted to the local climate gradually... eventually creating a stronger plant that can be grown from cutting or seed [multiple generations] to create a variety suitable to the colder climate... It seems like a lot of effort but I feel it's a plant worthy of it's own customised microclimate... I also have a similiar design to grow a Theobroma cacao tree... I also use to have one growing but it sadly died of a common disease known as Frosty Pod Rot [Diseases of the Cocoa Tree (Theobroma cacao) I personally love being told I can't grow a certain plant/tree in this climate as it's a challenge I have defeated before and it makes the gardening experience even more exciting... Never say Never ;-)

Fungimentary: The Magic Mushrooms of Balingup

hahaha awesome awesome doco... pity about the subtitles that got in the way a fair bit of the time but still an awesome watch... very accurate info too the only thing that jumped out at me was when Mr Roger Norman Hilton - the mycologist [who reminds me of David Attenborough] was discussing how they were beleived to have started growing in balingup and then referred to a mushroom growing under cow dung [cubensis???] when infact subaeringinosa are a wood/grass loving species but it was great to hear the way he pronounced subaeringinosa... it's how i've always said it so makes me feel better that I got it right! but once again; there is always a confusion of gold tops and blue meanies? personally... gold tops to me have always been subs and blue meanies cubes but im sure other people will dispute this... it'd be interesting to hear people's thoughts! anyone who has not seen this doco before though!!! WATCH IT! Brilliant... made back in 1995 I was a bit disappointed that upload didn't include the theme song though as I was just speaking to a mate who use to play in the band who did it... ' the freedom police ' I'm gonna get a copy of it soon I hope when I get a chance to go visit him but until then has anyone else heard this track and do you have a copy ? and i've also got that cane toad doco... I laughed my arse off through most of it... great doco for sure! some of those people sure love their cane toads!

    Banisteriopsis Caapi

Anymore available folias? I've got a young cutting in the ground in the property i'm renting atm... hoping she grows much larger before i have to move but if not ill do my best to take cuttings or transplant [still a transplantable size atleast for now] i've noticed she is loving the weather we have been getting lately... much more humid than normal... i've got a home-made liquid fertiliser from [racing grade] pigeon poo and [washed] seaweed... approx 5-6 years old... my other plants LOVE it... would it be recommended for this beauty? I currently have her growing under a clear sheet of perspex to increase humidity being i'm in SA and for now it's working... i'm more concerned about our winter... Any growing advice is welcome and if you can spare any more cuttings; name your price and i'll get it sorted, it's the sort of plant you can't grow too much of... especially in Adelaide... I don't even know if anyone else is trying to grow it here?! Thanks so much for spreading the love Folias...

  19. music to me ears!!! so beautifully worded! thank you i couldn't agree with you more!
  20. Wow! I strongly disagree with you here Archaea... in fact in my experience I have found the EXACT opposite to be true! I know many people who I like to refer to as science whores... people who CLOSE their minds off to alternative views that science cannot explain or prove with evidence using the scientific method. This to me is stronly narrow-minded... As an example Acupuncture wasn't accepted into Western Medicine at first; until the energy flow [meridians] could actually be scientifically proven. Regardless of the fact TCM is 2,500 years old... science was SKEPTICAL! so in this respect it was close-minded! In my humble opinion; a true skeptic is not just a fence sitter who is considered close-minded [ i can't even work out why you would think that ] but they are someone who doesn't lean one way or the other based on facts or trends etc etc... I gladly consider myself a skeptic and proudly! I research a topic as thoroughly as I can on both arguments and then present my opinion based on what knowledge I have gained from my research. I think it's sad and dangerous when people only rely on 'Scientific Journals' like some of my friends do. Scientific Journals do hold a lot of merit but they have been known to be wrong in the past and continue to be... it's not something aiming for a right or wrong result, it's merely a result. It's merely - hypothesis, experiment, results, conclusion. Many factors are missed in a lot of scientific scrutiny. Science is not perfect and the way it is still currently influenced through politics, religion and corporate interests simply equates that it is indeed not TRUE science as true science has no boundaries. So people who only depend on science are actually creating a boundary of their own in their own research that is already restrained by boundaries of it's own. A great example is the discussion on the medicinal aspects of cannabis vs the damaging effects... i.e. cannabis causes lung cancer vs cannabis has been shown to shrink tumours by up to 50%. I'm having this debate [turning into an argument where I am being personally attacked and dis-credited] with some friends at the moment... they claim they don't beleive it coz of certain sources not mentioning it and they haven't read any scientific journals that discuss it and that I have gone too far in making such claims. It took me 5 seconds to google "Scientific journals supporting cannabis fighting cancer" to find positive results. So yeh... at the end of the day.. people who only research one side of the coin are lazy scholars... I have been reading about the possibilities of cannabis fighting cancer for over 5 years now but had a hard time convincing anyone and finding "scientific proof" now the evidence is showing the US Government has known since the 70's. So yeh clearly skeptics are close-minded... omg a statement like that is one of the most close-minded i've ever heard! If you don't beleive me then doesn't that make YOU a skeptic? Go research it yourself and science will give you the same answer... I am far from against science quite the opposite but I am against people who stop at science and don't think outside the square... nothing has all the answers; it's always a combination! [The same could be said with pharmacology vs pharmacognosy but that's a whole other discussion in itself]
  21. Personally I don't seen psychedelics as hallucinogens. They create an abstraction of reality; not a delusion of reality. A true hallucingoen would be found in the tropane family - SOLANACEAE... belladonna, datura, brugmansia, etc... creating distortions of reality which you can't recognise as being not real and not part of reality. Not to say psychedelics don't possess halucinogenic effects as we all know here they most certainly do. But not for everyone and not in every experience. That's why I disagree on them being sloppily 'labelled' as hallucinogens.... the same could be said for the term Entheogen as they don't always contain a theistic experience/encounter and certainly not for some people. Entheogen is like a sub-category like hallucinogen. I love visuals but it's not the main reason for the journey - merely the icing on the cake... it's the personal insights; new ideas and 'mind trip' as opposed to visual or audial distortions that interest me. Altering the usual states of the mind to trigger new thoughts; re-surface old memories and switch on your creativity ten-fold!!! - This can hardly be defined as hallucinating as the definition generally implies a visual or auditory stimuli. Of course I expect dis-agreement but that's the beauty of variety of thought... if we all agreed on the same things life would be shit!

    Into the wild

wow... a lot of heavy aggressive responses in this thread... why does it ever need to get personal people really? I happen to agree with meeka that money is a number one hurdle... to last out in the wild you need to be properly prepared.. that doesn't always mean supplies or equipment but knowledge and for a city folk to gain that knowledge unless they have good contacts who can teach them will have to pay MONEY to learn the skills required besides anything else... I also dream of a such an adventure... it would never be FOREVER but I definently want to do it over a long period... perhaps invest in a small boat and travel the length of the murray... take a backpack, water storage, fishing rod and dried fruits for energy not to forget cooking supplies and sufficient clothing depending on the time of year. All that stuff costs money... if I am going to do it I am going to survive and return to tell the story, naturally I would lose weight but if I am well prepared I will do it healthily and break a lot of bad habits I find I have. There are numerous reasons I would love to do this but for now; seeming as I have just committed to full-time study I won't be doing it in a hurry... perhaps at the end of the year as a reward for my hard work. But hey... if the world is going to fuck up royally sooner rather than later there is nothing I personally can do about it to stop it from happening so why live my life in paranoia of what ifs? Life life for the miracle it is... day by day! Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift; that is why it is called 'the present'!
  24. I disagree... why bring it to the attention of more authorities, they would probably ban the sale of such cacti completely... I personally think the best way to approach these sellers is to contact them directly... I am sure they aren't aware of the legislation and obviously haven't stopped to think about any possible consequences of mentioning alkaloids. Others no doubt will be idiots and will just think we are paranoid but if they decide to reply to any messages sent like that; THEN it would be worth notifying ebay :-)
