    Pupping Pereskiopsis

yeah i would go for cutting the tip off and letting the leaves pump energy into the graft. you will need to keep lopping of the new pups on the side branch but yeah, technically you should get greater growth.
  4. you can just put herb straight into a hollowed out cone in an apple, no foil required. punch a hole through to it from the other side and breathe in through there.

    Grafting young fissuratus

i have had many loph grafts turn bright red like that. it will sort itself out as it gets bigger. i have never thought of humidity as being the main factor. i have always thought heat or light. not sure but yeah, it will be fine as it gets bigger.

    Grafting young fissuratus

good tip cough im gonna try this with a few other type that have been refusing to graft as easily as lophs. and i second the high humidity for grafting peres i got a cheap fishtank from cheap as chips a while ago and have a tuppaware container of water sitting inside and a piece of foam over the top. success rates of loph grafts have gone up dramatically since i have put them in there.
  9. thanks for posting that. really interesting stuff.

Bring back the oily fish say Britons

ha i just posted that same article in another thread you need fish eating other fish to get omega-3s though. algae make the fats, the fish eat it and pass it up the food chain. fish fed on feeds containing vegetable oils are not going to have same nutritional value and are probably going to be in worse health themselves. i guess biotechnology needs to step up and culture big vats of the algae for feed perhaps. or splice the genes into a easier to grow bacteria and culture it up that way.
  11. http://www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/19767/?nlid=692 n ambitious project to create an accurate computer model of the brain has reached an impressive milestone. Scientists in Switzerland working with IBM researchers have shown that their computer simulation of the neocortical column, arguably the most complex part of a mammal's brain, appears to behave like its biological counterpart. By demonstrating that their simulation is realistic, the researchers say, these results suggest that an entire mammal brain could be completely modeled within three years, and a human brain within the next decade. "What we're doing is reverse-engineering the brain," says Henry Markram, codirector of the Brain Mind Institute at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, in Switzerland, who led the work, called the Blue Brain project, which began in 2005. (See "IBM: The Computer Brain.") By mimicking the behavior of the brain down to the individual neuron, the researchers aim to create a modeling tool that can be used by neuroscientists to run experiments, test hypotheses, and analyze the effects of drugs more efficiently than they could using real brain tissue. The model of part of the brain was completed last year, says Markram. But now, after extensive testing comparing its behavior with results from biological experiments, he is satisfied that the simulation is accurate enough that the researchers can proceed with the rest of the brain. "It's amazing work," says Thomas Serre, a computational-neuroscience researcher at MIT. "This is likely to have a tremendous impact on neuroscience." The project began with the initial goal of modeling the 10,000 neurons and 30 million synaptic connections that make up a rat's neocortical column, the main building block of a mammal's cortex. The neocortical column was chosen as a starting point because it is widely recognized as being particularly complex, with a heterogeneous structure consisting of many different types of synapse and ion channels. "There's no point in dreaming about modeling the brain if you can't model a small part of it," says Markram. The model itself is based on 15 years' worth of experimental data on neuronal morphology, gene expression, ion channels, synaptic connectivity, and electrophysiological recordings of the neocortical columns of rats. Software tools were then developed to process this information and automatically reconstruct physiologically accurate 3-D models of neurons and their interconnections.

biggest problem in aquaculture at the moment is that the fish are fed on junk fish. they go out and catch fish that consumers wont eat, grind em up and turn em into fish food to feed the aquaculture fish. there is research going on at the moment trying to fix this problem but yeah, the current state of the aquaculture industry is a bit depressing.
  13. anyone know of any groups to volunteer for. wouldnt mind getting out there and planting some trees or doing some good once in a while but dont really want to head out with a bunch of 40 year olds etc. would be good to head out with a youngish crowd of likeminded people. i heard about some deal a while ago interstate which had a tree planting then a rave or doof at night that was free to all those that helped out. anyone know if groups like these are still operating?

  15. first post not the first line, not the second line but the one after that. i havent actually read it as i have been in some large debates on evolution before and its as close as you can get to virtually banging your head against a wall.
  16. i too am a biologist and i too am sick of this discussion as it is pretty damn clear that evolution is responsible for the variety of life we have on earth. if that amazon discussion wont convince anyone either way then it must be pretty shit. if anyone is interested in abiogenesis and how complex things like life evolve i am currently reading a very good book which i thoroughly recommend. its called "Complexity" and its by M. Mitchell Waldrop. most enjoyable book i have read in a long time. talks about the possibilities of the origin of life, artificial intelligence, models of economies. lots of fun stuff.

  18. cheers for replies, links and stories. would like to get out there and do some good. preferably not in the baking sun though. will look into it further.
  19. i dont think that this would be the case with all illnesses. im pretty sure a positive attitude would help with illnesses where the immune system is more involved. stress and anxiety can result in the immune system not operating at full capacity i think. but yeah, cancer is a nasty one and it doesn't suprise me that your attitude doesn't affect its development. bring out the makers of "the secret" now hey.
