  1. Oh, and I always cap my pipes and hotknife bottles with a coin

There was a case in Britain where a truck driver was stopped and his entire load of lemons was unloaded and searched because a sniffer dog had indicated the presence of cannabis. The driver went on a national radio programme to complain. There was no apology and he had to reload the truck himself. Because the dog had been badly trained and thought it was the lemony scent of its samples that indicated the presence of cannabis.

  2. I don't know about the law in Australia but the Hemp Essential Oil produced by one clown in Switzerland would certainly not be legal in Britain or Spain. He has not had it tested, he relies on his misunderstanding of how distillation works. It has been tested at levels that are ridiculous. 0.02% doesn't sound much but this means that it is possible to get 200 milligrammes of pure THC from one litre, the equivalent of one gramme of good skunk or 5 grammes of old-style grass.

In Britain the Hemp Essential Oil from Switzerland would count as a Class A drug like heroin and cocaine.

There is a company in Canada that produces an oil with the level of THC below the limit of detectability.

  3. You ignored the OPINIONS of #sigh# flip and others but the two pieces of real INFORMATION from people who had tried it, as opposed to prejudice and hypothesis, were

    1) planthelper: "smoking good material does work ,... hmm to a certain degree."

    2) gomaos: "I tried only once then gave up, it just tasted to gross... disgusting actually"

One positive and one negative makes for a REASONABLE basis for hypothesis.

But now we have two positives, planthelper and johnboy, still with only one negative.

To continue with flip's course on Experimental Design 101, we now have to think through the possible explantations of the results so far before designing the next experiment.

    Hypotheses:

    1) CO2, CO and a range of chemicals produced by burning could have the same effect.

    2) Cathinone is sufficiently stable while being boiled that some survives as vapour. While unstable for storage the time that passes in smoking is very short. The effect could be very strong as inhaling the vapours of freebase amphetamines is reported as having powerful effects for small doses.

    3) Cathine and the other relatives are also amphetamine relatives and will have a potent effect for their dose.

    4) The agarofuran alkaloids are more volatile than I would expect.

    5) As johnboy has reported that the effect is "significant body relaxation" we might suppose that the agarofuran alkaloids may break down into other derivatives of the agarofurans. Chen xiang gave one of its names to the agarofurans and is used in TCM for sedation.

    6) The placebo effect, especially potent in Americans who are genetically and culturally disposed to be more gullible.

Oh dear I am suddenly busy, can anyone think of other hypotheses?

Now I would like people to tell me how we can adjust the experiment to distinguish between these possibilities.

Remember science is not contradictory. Because it is a process, constantly developing and testing hypotheses against experimental observations the state of knowledge in different parts of the same science may appear contadictory.

  4. Because it is rapid, requires a low dose with fewer side-effects and with some herbs extremely pleasurable?

Smoking (including vapourisation of course) is one of the tools of the herbalist, as are snorting and injection, though those should be used with vastly more care.

  5. And please remember that many species of Lagochilus contain these terpenes and any species would be worth cultivating. I doubt the peoples of Central Asia only used the one species when there are so many there.

So friendly, have you asked your Chinese suppliers about 'da chi tu chun hua', 'ka shi tu chun hua', 'kuo ci tu chun hua', 'da hua tu chun hua', 'xin jiang tu chun hua', 'er ci ye tu chun hua', 'dong qing ye tu chun hua', 'mao jie tu chun hua', 'a er tai tu chun hua', 'rui ci tu chun hua', 'ying mao tu chun hua' or, I suppose, plain 'tu chun hua'? Hare (Rabbit) Lip Flower?

Do you need a key to identify the genus:

    or the species:

    http://flora.huh.harvard.edu:8080/flora/br...117497&key_no=1 both for China (Xinjiang)

  6. I've felt a bit anxious on large doses, a weird stimulant.

It has actions on the NO system, for example on the control of blood in the penis. Some similarity to Viagra but without the ®

  7. If it was the same extract you tried then the active constituent may be unstable. Over several months there are a lot of slow chemical changes that could take place analogous to the deacetylation of salvinorin A to the inactive B. Not all the neoclerodanes are as stable as salvinorin A is now said to be.

Don't give up now, it deserves further testing, and keep it in the freezer.

Some drugs are the reverse. If you make an aqueous extract of wild lettuce some of the esters are opened during the boiling. If you store the dry lettuce opium for two years they can spontaneously dehydrate and cyclise into more active compounds.

    S. mexicana, interesting. You know the weird history of Salvia hispanica? It was named because it was found in Spain but is a native of America. It was introduced into Andalucia very soon after Columbus had opened new trade (and slavery and piracy) routes with America. The botanists knew nothing of the plant before it was "discovered" in Spain.

  8. If you use thick knives, I use a pair of thick fish knives of good quality stainless steel, they retain sufficient heat to boil the herbal volatiles. I apply them just after the red glow has departed.

I don't carry hotknife tools with me any more as I try not to smoke during the day now. However, for many years my friend and I were a familiar sight in the Crescents with our plastic bag of hotknife paraphernalia on our visits to render people unconscious.

    You will need:

One plastic shopping bag or other carrying case

    Aluminium foil

One butane torch for dwarf solderers

    A pair of fish knives

A 500ml bottle with two holes

    A supply of volatiles

    A good armchair or two

  9. Put your herb inside a piece of aluminium foil (don't believe the scare stories) and it won't scatter around, and the edges won't burn while the rest is heating.

What can I say about overheating the knives? Let them go just red then let them cool a little as you fumble for the bottle.
