this cake has collonised alot in the past few days. one side is almost totally white. seems to be going quite fast (on my 'first-timer' eyes) i was happy until i saw this. i know i should probably wait till the cake's close to full collonisation before i look for contams (or i think i should) but im not sure what this is, and it looks black heh, after my last thought of contamination i dont wanna jump the gun. is there any way i could use an oven to sterilize my jars bfore innoculation? because an oven would be able to get to higher temperatures, I dont know if its possible though.

Rev, do anoy of those plants have reliable alkaloid sources? It's hard to get the time to do an extraction these days so swim sort of want to make sure its worht it. he's not getting anywhere at finding obtus, so may as well give something else a go. Ok, well there's a few branches left around in the scrub underneath, swim think the leaves are starting to wilt/turn brown. he'll get a photo and you guys can see what you think on species/if it's too dead. he spose the only thing to lose is money, which isn't much on a simple a/b extraxction. guess he'll give it a go and let you all know how it turns out .

I do. Can't hurt to try. I've already got the seeds. So I'm just gunna try plant them in a half verm / half seed raising mix. Could I use a terranium to keep humidity high? Just as one would with Mushrooms? What kind of humidity should they be kept at? What's the best temp. to keep them at? I can use an aquarium heater underneath to keep them warm.

the baggy's come pre sterilized? is there a way to re sterilize an old baggy?

ahh ok. for a half pint jar what would you say the best ratio is for verm/brf/water, i did 1/2cupverm, 1/4cupbrf and 1/4cupwater. but then again my verm is not as fine as it should be so it wouldnt hold as much water which may be why there's too much excess.

really? awesome. its just i was expecting collonisation to look like white icing on a cake, these things look kind of furry or hairy. I dunno its hard to tell though, but they are pure white. ill just leave it and see what happens. fingers crossed. edit: looking at some other teks the firsts signs of collonisation look pretty much the same as mine. awesomeness :D

That peanut joke brings back some memories. heres one i heard a while ago. al gore is out on his daily morning run when he comes across a little kid with a box. he runs over to the kid and asks whats in the box, the kid replies "kittens which were only just born", and al gore asks what sort, the kid says "democrats" and al gore says "ohhh, how cute". a few days later al gore is out on his jog again, but this time with bill clinton, he comes across the kid again, and expecting the kid to have the same reply tells bill clinton to watch, they both run over to the kid and al says "look in the box bill, look at all those cute kittens, key kid tell bill what kind of kittens that are", the boy replies "theyre republicans". confused al asks why they changed from democrats to republicans and the kid says "their eyes are open now." hee hee hee. meh best i got.

strange. i can only veiw ethnobotany-australia.net if i do the 'cached' thing through google. apparently theres a fair few threads on extractions on a.longifolia but i cant get my hands on them cause for some reason the site wont work unless i 'cached' it can anyone try the site and see if it works for them? or is my computer just being a fag as usual. EDIT: i managed to pull up a few through cached on a google search of 'ethnobotany australi longifolia extraction', turns out even worse than maidenii, one guy did extraction on 800g and got nothing.

well swim doesnt really have anything else. he will go back and grab a few branches nonetheless. he plans to have a search for obtus, if that fails he'll give the longifolia a go. what would be the best way to store the branches/bark for about a week before performing an extraction?

well, looking at photos on the net, i really cant tell the difference between a.longifolia and a.obtusifolia. i spose if they were flowering it would be easier but unfortunately theyre not. im planning on doing a bit of a trek the last week of these hols in an attempt to find some obtus, but need to be able to identify the tree first anyways, if i go to a place where a.obtusifolia are reported, ill be looking for the general longifolia style phyllodes because all the photos of obtus phyllodes look pretty much the same as the longifolia phyllodes and ive found longifolia phyllodes catch my eye really easily. but once im close up how do i tell the difference? ive noticed longifolia's grow branches out right from the very bottom so the whole tree is covered in phyllodes and the trunk is hard to make out unless your up close. do obtusifolias do the same or do branches not sprout up until halfway or more up the trunk? the longifolia is pretty easy to identify, so hopefully ill be able to find obtusifolia by looking for phyllodes which look similar to longifolia, then examining them upclose for any details which are unique to obtusifolia. thanks for any help. btw, what time are the seed pods usually about?

yeah my lungs suck as well. amongst the broken ribcage at this age, my spinal column is non existent and im reacdy to have a heart attack at 17. try inhaling oxygen through the lungs like that.

sorry i got confused and thought u meant to change location while colonising. yeah im doing 4 spots around sides of jar. im up to big w today. anddd, when colonising, should the jars be kept in dark, indirect sunlight or what?

thanks! if i used that jar much longer would they take to colonise compared to your average one? i only got a big W near me, kmart is a fair while away. ill have a look thru big W tomoro anyways. and how often should i change the location and what sort of changed enviropnment should i move them into?

just picked up all my materials, got home. damn. just realised the jars i have, have shoulders on them. had a search through some old boxes and found these. exactly 250mL but there so skinny? is that OK??? or do they need to be short and fat if this one isnt good enough ill be back up to the shops again tomoz to find some.

ahh ok. thanks guys. the method harry mentioned sounds best for avoiading contams, ill use that next time. when i did myn i made sur everything was sterile, all windows/doors shut, nuked my room with glen20, even wore a gas mask.

I just made my syringes. I made sure everything was super clean, used alot of Glen 20 But when mixing the spoers into the shot glass, isnt that very open for contamination? I spose you just gotta hope you did a good job and sterilizing your area, I hope I did!

What sort of alkaloid content do the phyllodes have? I contacted greening australia and even they knew no locations of the obtusifolia on the central coast.
