    Donating for SAB costs

Only around $220 to go to reach the annual goal. If you wanted to contribute to the upkeep of the forum but have not yet got around to donating, now is your time. The year is nearly finished and we are is the spirit of giving. Merry Christmas folks of the SAB Corroboree!
  2. @Darklight I can send you a few seeds when I next have a bunch. I'll message you when they are ready.
  3. A T section cutting is made by cutting a 4cm section of stem, around 2cm either side of a young shoot. The section could be layered using moist coir and course sand and wrapped with a stocking to allow easy watering. I'm not sure how long you would leave the layer cutting before checking if roots have formed. Once the roots have formed the cutting can be removed. I rarely give gardening advice as in my climate tropicals are easy to grow, so i feel my experience is not really relvant to southern conditions, where tropical plants need a bit more focus and local expertise. Good luck with your Alicia cuttings Darklight.
  4. I have had success with T section cuttings in the tropics, when making the original clones available. You could have more success layer propagating a T section, then removing from the vine once the roots have established.
  5. Glad your seeds made it. It would be interesting to trial a few different planting methods and see what comes up.
  6. MDMA — more commonly known as ecstasy — is one step closer to becoming a legal form of treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the United States. Researchers have for years been looking at how the drug could be used in conjunction with therapy to help sufferers confront their trauma. Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it for use in a phase-three clinical trial — the final stage of research required before it can be considered for approval as a prescription drug. So, what exactly is MDMA, what will the clinical trial involve and what implications might it have for sufferers in Australia? What is MDMA? MDMA — or 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine — is a psychoactive drug that reduces inhibitions and causes users to become more alert, affectionate and energetic. It is the presumed main ingredient in the illicit party drug ecstasy. Why do researchers believe it can help PTSD? People with PTSD tend to avoid recollections of the experience that prompted their PTSD or situations that remind them of the trauma. Exposure therapy is used to treat the disorder because it encourages sufferers to confront their trauma, either by remembering it or re-experiencing the event. According to the president of Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine (PRISM), Dr Martin Williams, MDMA can help facilitate that because it is an "empathogen". "It promotes a closeness between people, so it makes people feel a lot more open to others, enables them to communicate more effectively and more directly and it also reduces fear and anxiety," he said. "From that point of view, MDMA is very effective in psychotherapy in opening up the bonds [or] the sense of trust between the patient and the therapist." Give me the stats! The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) was responsible for bringing the case for the phase-three clinical trial to the FDA. Here's what it says of its phase-two study results: 107 subjects treated with chronic PTSD 53 per cent of 74 participants no longer qualified for PTSD after two to three MDMA-assisted psychotherapy sessions That compared to 23 per cent who received a placebo Of 65 subjects interviewed one year after treatment, 66 per cent no longer had PTSD How would MDMA be taken? During a psychotherapy session, pure MDMA would be administered orally via a capsule or dissolved in juice under the supervision of a therapist. "The therapy session would normally start at 8:00am in the morning and go through to 5:00pm in the afternoon," Dr Williams said. "That's partly due to the fact that the effects of MDMA are reasonably long-lasting, usually last about five or six hours." Dr Williams said the patient would sometimes be given eyeshades and music to help them relax. "Then normally they'd be allowed to just think their own thoughts and discuss with the therapist at any time anything that might be on their mind," he said. What are the risks? Associate Professor Nicole Lee, from the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University, wrote for The Conversation in April that MDMA could cause nausea, jaw clenching and increased heart rate and blood pressure. Overdosing on MDMA or mixing it with other drugs such an anti-depressants can also result in serotonin syndrome — too much of the brain chemical serotonin. Serotonin syndrome can cause agitation, confusion and headache, and in severe cases coma and death. But Dr Lee said dependence was uncommon. "Unlike other stimulants, MDMA does not appear to be at high risk of overuse because the positive effects decrease and negative effects increase quickly with use," she wrote. It is against the law to use, sell, distribute or manufacture MDMA in Australia. So why is a phase-three clinical trial a big deal? Phase-three trials essentially allow for a much larger group of participants to be tested, and the more participants tested, the more conclusive the results. And what's the ultimate goal? The ultimate goal is to have MDMA approved as a prescription drug. However, Dr Williams stressed it would only be available under supervised treatment. "As far as I know in the US there is no intention to make it available over a pharmacy counter for people to take away with them," he said. So what does this mean for Australia? It is not clear. Dr Williams said it was uncertain whether the approval would help fast-track a clinical trial here in Australia, but it could help to change conservative perceptions. "PRISM has been working for the last five-and-a-half years to try and establish a similar clinical trial, but at this stage we still haven't succeeded in identifying a research group in Australia that would assist us in getting a trial underway," he said. "That seems to reflect the conservatism in Australia. It is very sensitive in terms of funding risks and we feel researchers are concerned about the controversy. "What we're hoping is the success in the US will change the landscape over here." link - http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-01/how-might-mdma-be-used-to-treat-post-traumatic-stress-disorder/8082620

  9. How the Trump Campaign Built an Identity Database and Used Facebook Ads to Win the Election There may be some fake news on Facebook, but the power of the Facebook advertising platform to influence voters is very real. This is the story of how the Trump campaign used data to target African Americans and young women with $150 million dollars of Facebook and Instagram advertisements in the final weeks of the election, quietly launching the most successful digital voter suppression operation in American history. Throughout the campaign, President-Elect Donald J. Trump shrewdly invested in Facebook advertisements to reach his supporters and raise campaign donations. Facing a short-fall of momentum and voter support in the polls, the Trump campaign deployed it’s custom database, named Project Alamo, containing detailed identity profiles on 220 million people in America. With Project Alamo as ammunition, the Trump digital operations team covertly executed a massive digital last-stand strategy using targeted Facebook ads to ‘discourage’ Hillary Clinton supporters from voting. The Trump campaign poured money and resources into political advertisements on Facebook, Instagram, the Facebook Audience Network, and Facebook data-broker partners. Depress The Vote “We have three major voter suppression operations under way,” a senior Trump official explained to reporters from BusinessWeek. They’re aimed at three groups Clinton needs to win overwhelmingly: idealistic white liberals, young women, and African Americans.” The goal was to depress Hillary Clinton’s vote total. “We know because we’ve modeled this,” the senior Trump official said. “It will dramatically affect her ability to turn these people out.” For example, Trump’s digital team created a South Park-style animation of Hillary Clinton delivering the “super predator” line (using audio from her original 1996 sound bite), as cartoon text popped up around her: “Hillary Thinks African Americans are Super Predators.” Then, Trump’s animated “super predator” political advertisement was delivered to certain African American voters via Facebook “dark posts” — nonpublic paid posts shown only to the Facebook users that Trump chose. Facebook is refusing to release a copy of the animated “Hillary Thinks African Americans are Super Predators” advertisement, or any other ‘negative’ presidential political ad that it ran. Facebook is also refusing to release details about the gender, ethnic, or location targeting parameters of these ads. Until further review, it’s uncertain if these targeted political advertisements are fully compliant with federal law. Facebook’s advertising platform has recently come under fire from Congress for allowing advertisers to target African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and other “ethnic affinities”. Facing a wave of criticism, Facebook announced last week that it would build an automated system that would let it better spot ads that discriminate illegally. Facebook anticipates that its new system will be available by early 2017. After the election, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at a conference, “I think the idea that fake news on Facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea.” But he avoided the elephant in the room — President-Elect Trump’s election victory proves the power of Facebook advertising to influence the election. Obviously, Zuckerberg would never say it’s a “pretty crazy idea” that Facebook’s advertising platform is supremely effective at persuading Facebook users to click, buy, or vote. In 2015, Facebook’s revenue from advertising was $17.9 billion dollars. According to it’s annual report, Facebook generates “substantially all of our revenue from advertising. The loss of marketers, or reduction in spending by marketers, could seriously harm our business.” Trump’s Huge Digital The engine of the Trump campaign was it’s digital operations division. Headquartered in San Antonio, the Trump digital team consisted of 100 staffers, including a mix programmers, web developers, network engineers, data scientists, graphic artists, ad copywriters, and media buyers. The chief executive of Trump’s digital operation was Brad Parscale, a successful entrepreneur and founder of the marketing agency Giles-Parscale Inc. Parscale worked closely with President-Elect Trump and was one of select few members of Trump’s inner-circle entrusted to tweet from his personal Twitter account, @ realDonaldTrump. Parscale’s lack of prior campaign experience was actually one of his greatest assets. “I always wonder why people in politics act like this stuff is so mystical,” Parscale says. “It’s the same shit we use in commercial, just has fancier names.” On the strength of Parscale’s ability to generate campaign donations using Facebook and e-mail, the digital operations division was the Trump campaign’s largest source of cash. In the Bloomberg BusinessWeek piece, “Inside the Trump Bunker, With Days to Go”, reporters Sasha Issenberg and Joshua Green detail how deeply President-Elect Trump was interested in his campaign’s digital strategy and fundraising operations. “Trump himself was an avid pupil. Parscale would sit with him on the plane to share the latest data on his mushrooming audience and the $230 million they’ve funneled into his campaign coffers.” Entire article https://medium.com/@MedicalReport/how-the-trump-campaign-built-an-identity-database-and-used-facebook-ads-to-win-the-election-4ff7d24269ac#.yc7rl4csj

  14. Ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic brew from the Amazon consumed in religious ceremonies for centuries, has been gaining popularity in Europe and North America as a mind-altering trick to condense years of psychotherapy into a psychedelic trip just a few hours long. Drinking the plant brew, users report, helps gain psychological insight and produce new ideas, among other things. To those users, it’s not exactly news that a psychedelic can enhance creativity. But in recent years, science has been catching up to oral literature, trying to use more objective methods to double-check people’s anecdotes about the effects of the muddy, foul-tasting brew. In one study published in Psychopharmacology in July, researchers in Spain and the Netherlands report that ayahuasca seems to help people apply more creative and “divergent” thinking to solving puzzles. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_57ebfd9ee4b024a52d2c29e5
  15. Seeds are ripening now. I will have a few lots to give away to folks willing to give growing this vine a shot and updating their experience in the thread. Put in your requests in the thread below. I'll send out to 5 or so members. Cheers
