  1. Hi Ed,

I have a couple of 'Eileen' cuts now [thanks], the largest one I have [a bit over a foot long and 8-9cm width] I tried to get some roots to strike, must have been a month ago now, well I thought I would check on the progress of the root growth about 2 weeks after putting in sand/potting mix/vermiculite mix and it appeared to be starting to rot a bit. I promptly removed and re-cut for healing. Seems to be too cold were I am now. Am waiting on some perlite [a good inert cutting media], though I will most likely leave them till spring now as I don't want to lose any of this valuable bridgesioid in particular. I have never had any problems striking Trichocereus/Echinopsis cuttings until now, though I usually do all my cuttings in spring. Thought I might give it a go anyway. I can't see there being any real problems with trying to strike one at the right time of year though. I think a few factors contributed to the rot. 1. Too cold and not enough light. 2.Bad choice of cutting mix. 3. Thickness of the cutting.

    Hi mate,

Try giving 100% propagation sand a go on the top later. Just sit the cut on top and don't water until you notice some roots. Worked for me :) I did give it a bit of a water every couple of weeks, but not a soaking.

Mine took quite a while to root, but she's fine once sending them out.

  2. Dude, check out my macro pics thread (posted week or so ago) - there is a pic of a rooted pach tip cut from which I halved at bout 15cm. Attached a pic of the bottom half that I grafted a loph on to last week.

But - I'd wait until growing season again though, and do it then.

Mine rooted literally within the week after callousing and the bottom rooted half pupped twice within a couple weeks too. They're both putting on fine growth :)

  3. I have them in plastic containers on a windowsill. They get good light for most of the day (7am till 4pm) and during that time there average heat is around 20-26 degrees

Shroomy is right - up to around 2 weeks. If it takes longer than that, there is most likely something up.

As long as the seeds aren't too old and you've got them in that warm temp with relatively high humidity, you should see no issues.

  4. Hehe I was like "what the... they're not macrogonus"

    Durh.

So what is that variety of Pach you've got there? I've got two that are very similar that the woman I got them from was calling short-spined Peruvianus, but I'm not so sure.

    That yabby is soooo cute!

    Haha :P

Its just a standard T.pach, from what I remember was from Herbalistics. The two plants were originally the same, cut in half.

  5. Usually under watering seems to cause a softening of the tissue. Implementing a regualr watering strategy is usually the key to success, make sure you don't over water though.

IMHO 30-35 celsius is a little excessive in the heat department. I would lower it to between 20-25 celsius and see how you fare. Pretty sure that is why they are softening. Too much heat.

Thanks Tonic. To be honest I've not been up to date with watering schedules, I'll be more careful now.

Also as I mentioned I've turned off the warm white fluoro - hopefully temps will stabilize a bit lower.

  6. Hey all,

I've got some lophs under fluoros in my grow box and noticed a couple of them have become quite soft to touch.

Thinking they needed a good watering, I did so yesterday evening.. This morning they were a little better, but come tonight they're just as soft again.

Could it be because it is getting too hot in there? I'd say temps average 30-35 degrees during 'daytime'. Any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    KlUe

EDIT: Tonight I turned off the warm white bulb to reduce temperature in there.

  7. dude what a beauity, i guess it is possibly a cereus but i cant see that well, if that is a pachanoi though i woudl love some cuttings, can you get a better photo?

Hi hebrew, i'll get a shot next Sunday.. its my weekend job. Was on my phone too so apologies for the dodgy quality --- I'm quite sure its not an active however, but i'm no cacti pro :(

  8. Unfortunately I don't have any close ups of this speciment but it's fkn huge. As you can see, some of the 'branches' are so large, they're falling from their own weight.

Its behind my work if anyone wants a cut, no idea of the species; though i'm sure its purely ornamental.

  9. Hmmm, and I run a connection at around 46k. Not everyone has the luxury of high-speed internet.

I actually do run Firefox, and it does re-size the i mage (and did in this case as always), I was just trying to make a subtle hint at huge images, as has been mentioned here a few times of late. Not only do they become a pain in the arse for us impoverished dial-up surfers, it also uses up a shitload of storage space at SAB's Club Central Machine Room. 2Mb for one picture is insane !

Anyway, all good. But next time you get a bum-spanking from grandma

Next time i'll resize them, sorry - but I did say image heavy in the topic thread for people on dial up etc.

Just get a much better quality pic when they're bigger sizes.

    Cheers

  10. Ahh, I use opera which is better than both :P Auto size is not a feature I like, especially when it encourages oversize picture uploads! :P

Yeah Opera not bad, i've never used it properly though.

Sorry, didn't explain properly - its not auto size, its auto settings for shutter time etc. So images will be same resolution no matter what.

    Peace

  11. I agree ... would have been nice to eee the pix so they fit on my screen :) I notice the yabby one is pretty noisy.. what iso was it on?

Hi guys, was on an auto function with super macro mode with my Canon S2IS - Auto is better for quick snaps :)

Also, Mozilla firefox auto-fits pics that are too big to your screen - try downloading - its free and WAY better than IE 6.

    Cheers all
