Trichocereus Pachanoi and Hyrdoponics!
gerbil replied to Terry Trichocerous's topic in Cacti & Succulents
hey, interesting project you've got going, what type of light and area are you working with? I've got some I. violacea seeds which you can have, pm me if you want them. -
Depending on where abouts you live, it's not really a great time for starting seeds, the temperature will be getting far too cold, even if they do germinate, they won't be able to survive the winter. Generally i think the 10$ ones that are for sale would be cuts of established cactus. I saw a T. pachanoi selling for $175 the other day, one column around 50cm, then down the road there were two columns around the same size for $40. 175$ is ridiculous. I've had good success in a perlite/CSS(with some fine sand for top) mix, drop the seeds on top, gently press into the sand just snug, then lighty mist as to not disrupt the seed, had 6 T. pach germinate in one week. If you are wanting to germinate during winter, i use a heat pad and small watt fluros in a humidity box. The seed used was from SAB, highly viable.

The cardboard worked fine with me, seeds arrived in perfect condition. thanks mate

Probably wouldn't kill them if left in their normal shaded position, but i wouldn't put the plants out in the complete open during winter, temperature and strong winds etc could damage the plants. Winds would be my biggest worry (besides catarpiller and snail) She seem(ed) to be a very hardy plant, can lose lots of leaves, and sprout just as healthy as the last year. If you can manage to keep nodes tight, go for it, better than her growing sky high and breaking at the base

Isocol contains about 640ml IPA per litre, somewhere around there.Last time i checked a chemist for some, one chemist said "no sorry it's illegal to sell", and the one down the road "we can see you 25ml viles for 3$".

Put every type of cacti in it, that you can get your hands on. Just experiment and see what likes the environment. Will they be potted or just in a bulk medium? Personally i would dedicate sections to certain species at germination in own pots, and then abit down the track mix them about to get your desired look that you are after.

haha concerned about the publics safety by taking a substance that may cause liver problems off the market, maybe the same people think that alcohol strengthens our body. thanks for the kava information though
-
check the SAB webstore, or earthalchemy, should be some other places around too

Personally, I didn't really like it at all. Maybe it was because so many people were telling me to watch it, and how great it was, but I found it to be quite a let down. Maybe it was just me hehe

whilst on the mints...anyone know the alkaloid in Catnip (nepeta cataria)? found it once, but can't find it again. Have you achieved some sort of effects from catmint thelema? Tried alot with it, but never could get noticeable effects

Back in the good old days, a friend had one plant in a good potting soil, in about a 15 litre pot. The exact deformed leaves and curling occured, aswell as fluctuations in colour. Watered with a high nitrogen fertiliser once in a while, didn't really seem to do alot. They added a 3-4cm layer of good rich garden mulch to the pot, and moved the pot about 3 feet from the original position, which gave just a little bit more direct sunlight during the afternoon. At this time the plant started to shoot healthy shoots, and lots of them. Shoots even started on a stem that was being really resistant to sprout. The Ph was around 6.5-7 At first i thought the problems were from compacted potting soil, so lack of oxygen, so thats why the mulch was applied, this seemed to loosen the soil and give nutrients. What Ph were the people with acidic soil running at back when they had the plant?

You said break the cycle as nicotine patches do, i don't know alot about those patches. Although, going from hard alcohol addiction to strong medication can't be too good for anyone in my opinion. It may work in the long run, but substituting one feeling for another, is just forming another addiction in the long run isn't it? I know many people who have crossed this path with the same thing as i describe, that's why i ask no offence intended [ 05. April 2003, 00:09: Message edited by: gerbil ]

taking them to cure alcohol addiction i feel is quite wrong, it's basically going from one substance to another, yet being in the same situation. Both can be addictive, and the reason people use alcohol, will be just the reason that the same people will use these tablets thats just my opinion though

Caldeye, thanks for that, will give that a try with a few seeds, good info Tort., yeah you are right, this lot of seeds are in finer sand with perlite. The shop sells it as CSS, but it is 70% fine sand by the looks of it, I just need to filter it all a bit. Will try some coarser sand with some more seeds thanks, gerbil

been about 6 weeks since i recieved the seeds, i am still getting 100% germination rates. The only problems i am having is, the root doesn't seem to penetrate the medium all the time, about 50% do this, and go extremely lanky, they have to be buried manually, and even then, some stems elongate and the seedling dies. Do many people have these problems? [ 03. April 2003, 21:43: Message edited by: gerbil ]
