    The idea of hybridizing mushrooms has been jangled around for years. And apparantly, from the research and discoveries concerning the Armillaria Mellea mushroom, it is now scientifically proven that the idea of hybridizing different mushroom races or species is a myth.

    The so called "hybridizing of fungi" is more like mating two selected strains. That would be possible, but then the result would still be the same specie and race and possibly a new strain, which is kind of absurd when strains are apparantly infinite. It would seem very possible that "strain hybrids" can occur. That isn't a HYBRID according to the definition (Websters New World Dictionary definition). But of course, when the spore print is taken, it is back to the full genotype spore race - with the strain or strain hybrid lost.

    The research with A. Mellea has revealed the existance of these spore races which are unable to mate. The Mycologists describe this as "morphologically similar but biologically distinct species", or that these races are actually different species. This makes the taxonomy of the shrooms impossible and unworkable. But the idea of dividing the specie into spore races makes total sense. Instead of creating myriads of new specie names to designate these new spore races, the races just need to be specified in the taxonomy. For instance - Psilocybe Cubensis Equador - Psilocybe Cubensis Fanaticus - Psilocybe Cubensis Treasure coast ect. And in the case of the A. Mellea races, one can have: A. Mellea California - A. Mellea Europa or A. Mellea Japanensis ect.

    In summary, this new knowledge about the unmatability of isolates of N. American and European honey mushrooms (Armillaria Mellea) shows that the theoretical hybridizing of A. Mellea is impossible. And when the clear differentiation displayed by the various races of available P. Cubensis is added to the mix, the hybrid myth is exposed.

    Is it possible to cross 2 strains?

    A hybrid would result from the mating of a monokaryon of one strain with a monokaryon of another strain.

    A hybrid would result from the mating of a monokaryon of one strain with a monokaryon of another strain. This paired Dikaryon would be a hybrid between the two strains. The true success of the hybrid would be if it produced fruits that had spores. Only at this stage would the true hybrid STRAIN be accomplished. No genetic information is exchanged between the two strains until their seperate haploid nuclei have fused and then undergone meiosis. Recombination would then occur between the two seperate strains forming a third strain. It's offspring(spores) would be new combinations of the two donor strains.

    Hybrids can also be formed by Anastomosis between two dikaryons of different Strains, but it will happen at Far less frequency then mating monokaryons.

    Anastomosis occurs at a higher frequency between substrains of an individual strain. I.E. between different spore matings resulting from a single syringe. When you multispore inoculate a jar of substrate, this is Happening with a high degreee of frequency. A dominant mating will fuse with other matings, incorporating them into it's mycelial network. It can even rewire a false mating into a good mating. It can overcome an incompatible mating, by replacing one of the nuclei within another strand with one of it's own.

    A Fertile dikaryon A1B1 A2B2 can run into an infertile A1B2 A2B2 and replace the A1B2 nuclei with a A1B1 nuclei. Creating a fertile A1B1 A2B2 dikaryon that joins the colony. Subsequent fusion could replace the A2B2 nuclei with it's own A2B2 nuclei, which would completely rewire the hyphal strand to it's exact genetic makeup. Or it could leave it partially rewired.

    This process can be seen on a Nutrient agar plate. Not all substrains within a strain will fuse, some are completely incompatible. There will be a zone of zero growth between them on the petriplate. They just will not fuse.

    In essence hybrids can be formed between substrains of a single strain or between different strains of the same species.

    This is the theory, this has been scientifically demonstrated on other species of Basidiomycetes that have been studied!!! I know of know studies that have been done on CUBENSIS, relating to this information. But it must exist. Because it has been Clearly stated in several texts, that Psilocybe cubensis is heterothallic and tetrapolar. And all the above information relates to that type of breeding system in the Basidiomycetes.

    You ask why this is not being done, because not much MONEY goes into this type of research in the legitamite world.

    Anastomosis has been studied extensively in the edible mushroom world. Agaricus bisporus is homothallic and two spored, not four. Each and every spore it produces already contains both haploid nuclei to make a dikaryon. But fusion(Anastamosis) between these dikaryons produces more productive Dikaryons!!! The majority of High yielding bisporous are a result of HYBRIDIZATION within a STRAIN or between Strains of this species. So if it occurs between DIKARYONS of this species,it has been viewed occuring between monokaryons of other species, WHY WOULD anyone Doubt that it can occur within the Species Psilocybe cubensis.

    The major factor to overcome with mating monokaryons is the proximity with which they germinate. Spores tend to clump. So simply placing spores of two different strains in a single syringe, will not overcome the clumping of spores of like strains, and hence their close proximity to each other upon germination.

    Probably still occurs, when injected into a substrate, and some of the resulting fruitbodies might actually be hybrids, between Strains, and the resulting offspring (spores) from that mushroom will be different looking then both the mushroom it came from, and all of the mushrooms from both the Donor strains.

    Much easier to DILUTE spores from each strain seperately, plate them, isolate slower growing monokaryons, and try mating as many of these from each strain as possible, with as many as possible from the other strain. All matings that fruit, are hybrids!!! If they produce spores, you now have a new STRAIN. Simply cloning the original matings that fruited, will be a Hybrid as well, but not a true hybrid, becasue their has been NO Recombination between the two strains, NO MIXING OF GENES. There has simply been a successful coexistence of two haploid nuclei, one from each Strain, acting independently, but together to create fruits!!! The real genetic swap occurs during Karyogomay and the subsequent meiosis.

    The best way to listen while you trip is through good headphones with a quality source. The music generates the psychedelic images in your mind. Listen in pitch darkness. You\'ll be simply astounded!

    * Dave Matthew\'s Band: Like most jam bands, Dave\'s Band is disliked by some and enjoyed by many. Their live shows are quite nice. I like Live at Red Rocks a lot. Live in Central Park\'s cool too. Crash is my favorite studio album.

    dynamic songs with lots of melody changes. They also collaborated with Beck on Odelay.

    * Einstürzende Neubauten - \"Silence is Sexy\" etc. Crazy Germans...

    * Entheogenic - \"Entheogenic\" and \"Spontaneus Illumination\". A blend of ambient atmospheres, chill out tunes, intelligent electronic dub, surprising ethnic trance, deep organic drums n\' bass, and mixtures of delightful aural environments. Very entheogenic indeed. Their soundlab is currently situated in a 17th century building surrounded by deep forests in southern France.

    * Fifth Element Soundtrack - Composed by Eric Serra and others. Lost of orchestra and classical styles

    mixed with trippy synthesizers and ambient-ness. Very moving and emotional. The whole cd merges together

    into one big song, like a journey.

    * Flaming Lips: Less known than Phish but the Lips have been around forever. I especially like Zaireeka! It is a 4 cd album... meant to be played on 4 cd players simultaneously! It makes a great trip activity! What if you don\'t have 4 cd players? Any combination will make for a unique Zaireeka experience. Don\'t worry if the disks aren\'t perfectly synced. It\'ll still do its thing.

    * Forest for the Trees - \"Forest for the Trees\" (!), \"The Sound of Wet Paint\". A tripped out Carl Stephenson\'s (Beck\'s musical comrade) home studio masterpiece extraordinaire. The making of the first Forest for the Trees album mentally exhausted Carl so much, that he was finally committed to an asylum by family and friends. Luckily he\'s O.k. now :)

    * Punjabi Lounge - Indian beats with some nice goa/psy trance entwined.

    * Radiohead: I especially like their albums from OK Computer to present. \"Karma Police\" so good high.

    * Religious music, or chants: For spiritual trips, helps focus your mind.

    * RJD2 - Dead Ringer, Since We Last Spoke

    * RUSH - Moving Pictures - (Tripmeister says) RUSH is the most awesome 3 man band ever! A lot of people dislike Getty Lee\'s voice, but you\'ll find that it sounds quite soothing when tripping balls. Alex Lifeson\'s emotional style on lead guitar cannot be matched and Neal Pert\'s expert talent on his massive drum kit is incomparable. If you haven\'t experienced RUSH when shrooming, you haven\'t lived.

    * Satie, Erik - French pianist. Great classical music for those who don\'t like classical music.

    * Squarepusher - Ultravisitor

    * Shpongle - \"Are You Shpongled?\", \"Tales of the Inexpressible\" and \"Nothing Lasts... ...But Nothing is Lost\". A magic carpet ride around the world in a tea daze! Shpongle is one of the most fascinating psychedelic sound performances and is highly recommended for mind bending experiences. They have taken unique and timeless music influences and blended them with the digital mastery of sonic manipulation to bring about a perfect blending of the organic with technology. A good sound system is strongly recommended to fully experience the incredible multi-layered sound effects.

    * Shulman - \"Soundscapes and Modern Tales\" and \"In Search of a Meaningful Moment\". Shpongle wannabes or not, this is some very good stuff!

    * Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft - \"Nightsong\", \"Duplex Ride\" (!), \"Out Here. In There.\" Astonishing musical empathy between one of the worlds best contemporary jazz singers (Sidsel) and a keyboard and percussions wizard (Bugge). Their intimate intensity will blow Your breath away. Pure magic! Their solo projects (Bugge Wesseltoft\'s New Conception of Jazz etc.) are worth checking out as well.

    * Sigur Rós - \"Von\", \"Ágætis Byrjun\", \"()\". The music of Sigur Rós sounds like it\'s constructed from the stuff of dreams. A fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty.

    * Simian - \"Watch it Glow\", \"Chemistry Is What We Are\" (!), \"We Are Your Friends\". Psychedelic pop experimentalists with a heavy emphasis on \'mental\'.

    * Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness particularly. \"In The Arms of Sleep\" is shrooming for me!

    * Spacetime Continuum (get Alien Dreamtime with Terence McKenna)

    * Spacetribe - 2000 O.D, You Create Your Own Reality, Thru the Looking Glass etc etc - nice, minimal psytrance.     * Ween - godweensatan: the oneness, The Pod, Pure Guava, and Paintin\' the Town Brown (live) are great. So is the rest of their stuff. Check \'em out for sure.

    * Wevie Stonder - \"Stoat\", \"Drawing On Other People\'s Heads\", \"The Age Old Age of Old Age\", \"Kenyan Harry EP\" etc. First - it\'s not a guy, it\'s a band (Itchy Genius, Henry Music and M.C. Hat) that plays a compendium of styles including cack, advanced music and dog interviews. Wevie Stonder combine electronic music, live instruments and unpredictable narrative.

    I think this thread gives a good example of why certain parts of the forum should not be publicly available and only visible to registered members.

    This page is likely to be indexed by a search engine and then bang, unwanted attention.

    Please consider making some sections not publicly - ie available to guests; and exclude search engine trawling in that section.

    Just a suggestion.

    I second the move to edit if it's considered in the interests of keeping things legal.
