  1. A little experiment to try.

If you have multiple Mimosa pudica and zap just one of them with the piezo electric component of a lighter, it sends out a group signal and causes a defensive response in all of the other surrounding plants.

This plant is very interesting. One thing I was surprised to learn was the anti-parasitic qualities of consuming the seeds. This plant is basically the terminator of parasites in the human body.

    GENERAL NOTES

    - Heimia salicifolia is a member of the Lythraceae family.

    - Common names for both the plant and the drink made from it is Sinicuichi or Sun Opener.

    - In Mexican folk medicine, Sinicuiche is regarded as a narcotic, inebriant, diuretic, and febrifuge.

    - Sinicuichi was used to make an intoxicating drink.

    - The leaves were slightly wilted, crushed in water and then allowed to ferment.

    - The strained liquid was then drunk to induce an altered state consisting of golden tinged vision and acoustic hallucinations.

    - Heimia salicifolia contains the quinolizidine alkaloids cryogenine, lythrine, heimine, sinicuichine and others.

    - The main alkaloid is cryogenine and is reported to have anticholinergic and antispasmodic effects.

    CARE & CULTIVATION

    - Propagation occurs through cuttings as well as tiny seeds.

    - The soil must be of a fine consistency.

    - The seeds are broadcast onto the soil and pressed in gently with a flat object.

    - The seeds should then be only moistened with a fine mist water sprayer.

    - The soil should be kept slightly moist until the seeds have germinated

    - The seedlings do not tolerate direct sunlight.

    - Only when they have developed their first true leaves can they be placed in the sun and watered thoroughly.

    - The soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings.

    - When transplanting, be aware that even very young plants develop large root systems
    - It thrives best in warm, dry zones and does not tolerate frost.

    MODERN PREPARATION METHOD

Step 1: Gather whole plant material at sunset. Wash thoroughly. 25g of plant material is considered to be an effective psychoactive dose.

Step 2: Strip 25g of leaves off the branches and soak in fresh cold water for 24 hours.

Step 3: Using a large granite mortar and pestle, crush the slightly wet material thoroughly.

Step 4: Place the crushed material into a sterilised glass Mason jar and top with alcohol. The amount and type of alcohol to use is at your own direction.

Step 5: Place in direct sunlight for 7 days. Shake the jar frequently then open to release any gas build up. It is believed that during this period the Sun will impart its wisdom into the plant.

Step 6: Strain all liquid from the plant material using a metal coffee filter, plunger or similar device.

Step 7: Transfer the tincture to a dark medicine bottle for later use.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

    GENERAL NOTES

    - Sceletium tortuosum is a member of the Aizoaceae family and is native to South Africa.

    - The genus contains 8 species.

    - Sceletium tortuosum was one of the species used to prepare ‘Kanna’, which was utilised by the Khoi tribes and San tribes of Africa as a stimulant, hypnotic and as a sedative.

    - Kanna was highly valued by tribesman and they believed it aided them to travel long distances with neither food nor water.

    - The traditional method of preparation was to use the whole plant and crushed it between two flat rocks before fermenting it for 8 days in animal skins.

    - It was then removed and dried in the sun for use.

    - Kanna can be chewed, smoked, Insufflated, made into a tincture or used in a tea.

    - Contains mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, tortuosamine and others alkaloids.

    - It has been reported that the stems and roots contain up to 30% more active ingredients than the leaves.

    - Concentrations range from 0.05 - 2.3% in the dry product, with mesembrine being the major alkaloid.

    CARE & CULTIVATION

    - Sceletium tortuosum likes a well drained mix in full sun to part shade.

    - Makes an excellent ground cover.

    - Actively grows in colder and wetter winter times

    - Becomes dormant with increasing heat, at which time watering should be slowed down and stopped in the hottest part of the year.

    - Fertilise well when actively growing with SeaSol, worm tea or similar organic products.

    MODERN PREPARATION METHOD

Step 1: Gather whole plant material including leaves, stems and root. Wash thoroughly.

Step 2: Using a large granite mortar and pestle, crush the material thoroughly.

Step 3: Place the crushed material into a sterilised glass Mason jar.

Step 4: Place in direct full sun for 8 days until fermentation is complete. Be sure to shake the jar daily then open the jar to release any gas build up.

Step 5: Lay the material into a flat glass baking tray and allow it to completely dry in the sun for between 3-5 days. Alternatively you can finish this process in the oven at 100°C for approx 3-4 hours.

Step 6: Grind the Kanna in a coffee grinder. For smoking, a rough grind is best. For making a snuff, a super fine grind will be required. For chewing or use in tea, leave it unpowdered.

  5. Hello.

I can no longer make it down to EGA in Melbourne on Sunday so I'm offering up FREE return airfares, accommodation and my ticket to anyone that would like to go at the last minute.

The flights leave Brisbane on Sunday morning and return on Monday afternoon.

I spoke to Virgin who said you can change the airport to what ever one is closest to you.

There may be a small fee from Virgin to make all said changes (approx $90)

Totally bummed out I can't go so I hope someone else can take my place otherwise I'll have to forfeit it all which would hurt even more.

Please get in contact as soon as possible if you are interested so I can provide the details or answer any questions.

  7. Many days have passed with no takers so in the hopes of getting this going again I'd like withdraw my previous offer and replace it with these 5 cacti.

I am uncertain as to what each of them are but they were all gifts from various SAB members.

If you'd like anything from my previous offer just let me know and I'd be happy to add it to the care package.

My sincerest apologies for slowing down the Free Trade Thread.

  8. I wish I had this level of skill but unfortunately my paintings look like something a dolphin would paint at Sea World.

The Shamaness painting was done by an old school artist in Vietnam. It took me 3 days of negotiations for him to part with it. I'm not sure if you can see the brush strokes but they are next level. I've never seen anything like it. I had the framing guy offer to buy it off me when I brought it in and a customer that was in the store offered me an obscene amount after I had it framed. Its my favorite painting in the whole wide world.

    This is my second favorite:

  11. Anyone mushroom foraging in the next day or two in SE Queensland? I'd really love to tag along.

I have a large gap in my knowledge base and I'd be super interested in having a mycologist take me out into the field and teach me how to ID local fungi.

  12. Greetings!

I'm completing a xeriscaped cactus garden and I'm looking to acquire lots of baby cacti approx the size of a lighter and smaller. Around 50 in total.

If they are a bit bigger this is also fine.

If you have any and would be happy to part with them, please get in touch and let me know what types you have and how much you'd like in exchange.

Happy to do trades/swaps for some interesting ethnobotanicals if cash trades aren't your thing.

    Thanks in advance.
