  1. clever distraction, but didn't answer the question [or maybe it did and we are just delaying the inevitable]. so what will it be? It is really quite simple. There are only two choices. Should we abandon the attempts to give trouble makers and rule breakers a second chance? You have so vehemently opposed these attempts to try and find a solution to the problem, but do you now have the resolve to actually accept the consequence?

Perhaps I don't have to answer this except to show the old timers examples of the old times. At least this old thread hasn't been sanitised (yet), allowing us to glimpse the rules in (in)action and the possibility of hypocrisy being considered by those who take offense at my non-offensive and polite replies to members. Let's get in the time machine together and look at:

    http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/inde...anica&st=25

Here are some quotes from Torsten from that thread...

    "Oh dear. Fuck you're blind"

"none of you fuckwits give a shit about me"

"so maybe you should just trust me on that one and shut the fuck up."

"I am just wondering if you pricks"

"Kudos go to Earthalchemist, Dutchie and Daniel parents. and to you if you weren't such a stupid prick."

"Fuck!! you have to be kidding. you really aren't very bright right??"

"My recommendation to you shapeshifter: fuck off!"

"The last thing I need is fuckwits like you who don't have a clue about anything telling me that I didn't do enough"

"And then there were the really annoying fuckwits like Julian"

    "Fuck you're dumb!"

Yes it was quite a while ago, but the forums had been up for at least two years when that ugly episode appears to have transpired. It was actually sad reading it and I understand the chaos and trauma it must have generated.

Surely people can see that all the hullaballoo about recent posts is minor compared to that stuff in 2002?

Surely there's room for differences of opinions and style?

Surely people aren't so narrow minded that they can support banning people unjustly?

  2. yeah, ask username about brahmi, he uses it(when he remembers to)

    hat trick username!! :)

You're actually not damaging me at all with these baits.

Rather you're showing up the moderator's blindness (perhaps selectiveness) to your antics of deliberately trying to bait me. You're screwing yourself and making the moderator look bad.

  3. oh sob, the more you whine on about this the more I am inclined to just scrap the whole idea of giving second/third/fourth chances and just the delete the pains in the asses straight away. I thought I was doing you [incl you personally] a favour.

The Death of Socrates, by Jacques-Louis David 1787.

Despite claiming death-defying loyalty to his city, Socrates' pursuit of virtue and his strict adherence to truth clashed with the current course of Athenian politics and society.... But perhaps the most historically accurate of Socrates' offenses to the city was his position as a social and moral critic. Rather than upholding a status quo and accepting the development of immorality within his region, Socrates worked to undermine the collective notion of "might makes right" so common to Greece during this period. Plato refers to Socrates as the gadfly of the state, insofar as he aggravated the establishment with considerations of justice and the pursuit of goodness. His attempts to improve the Athenian's allegiance to justice may have been the source of his execution.

  4. There is soft tissue in the body that has nicotine receptors in it. I don't think there is a scientific explanation as to why they exist, but as they are in the liver or bladder or something (I forget) smoking a cigarette can cause you to want to go to take a dump.

Do we know how this vaccination will affect such bodily functions?

They're not actually 'nicotine receptors' but rather acetylcholine receptors and they are in fact present in all neuromuscular junctions. There are two types of acetyl-choline receptors however and one is called the 'nicotinic' type that responds to nicotine in addition to acetylcholine. The other type is the 'muscarinic type' interestingly which responds to 'muscarine' which was amazingly isolated first from the fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria).

  5.

    Sexist bullshite.

I'm sure all those women taken as slaves to be in some dudes harem just loved the time they spent there.

Cheer up apoth, it was actually a joke

You'll find it amongst Irish comedian Dave Allen's repertoires. (One of his trademarks was making jokes about the Catholic church).

  6. So you'd rather be raped than work?

Reminds me of a world war II story an Italian veteran once told me where a convent in Rome was repeatedly marauded by the advancing German troops where they raped all the nuns except for Sister Maria. He said that this occurred on at least on 12 occasions and I obviously asked why the German troops never raped Sister Maria in all those raids. He replied that "Sister Maria didn't like that sort of stuff".

  7. Well, we don't agree that some members are better than others in a way that warrants an 'inner sanctum', however I personally agree that yeah some members are worse enough that they warrant a sin bin.

    Is that all?

If the whole exercise of this thread was simply an attempt to prove this 'point', then I thank you for wasting my time.

Au contraire, this was only an appendix, you seem to have missed the main exercise which you can do as homework

But I don't know who's more naive... those who think the forum doesn't warrant an 'inner sanctum', or those who can't see that one already exists.

  8. The cure for all sorts of ills including cigarette smoking has been around for ages. A frontal lobotomy.

Who in their right mind would trust white coated goons with vaccines and procedures.

There's a Romanian saying that goes along the lines of... "if a bald person had a cure for baldness, then he'd put it on his own head (as opposed to trying to sell it to others)"

  9. doesn't matter for what purpose a separate forum is set up, it will eventually be regarded as the ivory tower by at least some of the community. there have been many suggestions for similar things and generally the overwhelming feeling is that this is not a good move. And I agree.

I think we can safely conclude that the concept of creating an "ivory tower" seems to be detested by all, as does it seems the concept of segregation. Creating classes amongst members is rightly deemed uncool. But how intellectually honest are the people saying these things?

Namely, the ready embracing of the concept of the class of moderated members... where are the anti-segregation mob now?

No to ivory tower, yes to dungeon.

  10. Here's a picture of the first agar plate innoculated. This one was streaked with the needle that was used to scrape off the spores from the print. The needle had some residual spores visible and these were streaked rather than discarded. Waste not, want not.

The first signs of life :)

  11. Sob, personally your comments re the forum and the mods are quite frustrating and make me angry, you honestly have absolutely no idea what went on and the time, effort , $$ that we put into it over the years. We did this for the love of the forum and the community, nice to know that people thought we don't give a shit, thankyou very much.

I can sort of see where you are coming from, but you took a very shallow pool of information and ran with it.

I don't know how I responded in an email to you, but it would have been similar to the one you posted, the mods were constantly flooded with these emails of which we could do nothing to fix the issues, we would try and explain the situation but it fell on deaf ears a lot of the time and eventually they became fairly blunt but still communicated the issues. I can understand your frustration with such simple responses but honestly they give the most information that could honestly be offered.

Let me say again that I'm only reporting my experiences and I don't pretend to know the untold history about it.

However I must say that having learned of some of the history I understand better why people are angered and thank you for explaining it a bit further. Ultimately I think that the frustration I felt as a stranger not being able to register must have been magnified even more in the members who knew of the problems and were powerless to act so I understand the frustration against what I have posted but it is only my experience I've recounted.

I'm stating what I did as an independent third party to the events which were obviously occuring at the terminal stages of the forum.

  12. Very disturbing, I could hardly explain this image to a friend without my voice wavering at points and a feeling of knotting coming to my throat and tears to my eyes.

I don't buy the 10th or 100th story as if that were true there would be many more photos or images like this one. This child has been unfortunate enough to have its carers die before them, and it's much more common for the children and babies to die before the adults as they are more susceptible to disease and mostly dehydration through disease. Regardless the child is in a miserable condition and almost sure to die.

Don't ask me why but this scene reminded me of Lawrence of Arabia, where the fellow had dropped off the camel and the fact is realised only after a long while has passed. The more experienced people of the desert tell Lawrence that it is a lost cause to go back for him, that death is assured for that person and anyone who goes after him. They say that 'it is written' that the man will die. Lawrence defies the advice and goes back for the man and brings him back close to a death by thirst himself. Later in the movie the man he saved is involved in an incident where he has shot dead a man from a rival clan. Lawrence not knowing who the culprit is, says that he will will personally execute the culprit so that the death is avenged in a way which does not leave any further room for a blood feud. He is shocked to see that it is the man he saved earlier while risking his own life. He draws the gun and shoots the man he saved, dead. The people say 'It was written then', confirming their earlier held belief that this man was doomed and had he been left to die might not have resulted in the death of another etc.

I've seen many instances in which it was futile to do CPR on a person presenting clinically dead to a hospital but everyone goes through the motions for 15-30 mins. Why? Are they treating the dead person or themselves? Humans are strange in that way, but I agree that something, anything could have been done to help. Many things we do are ultimately futile. But does that mean we stop doing it? On an intellectual level it might be yes, but we lack the certainty that our actions might not in fact help.

I think an event like this is sure to live in the mind of anyone who experiences it. Even if the man had personally carried the child the kilometer and the child had died in his arms on the way it would be a tremendous mental burden to take. I think one must remember that it was probably not just this isolated event alone that affected the photographer but the hundreds and thousands of images of misery and suffering that played on his mind.

  13. Apologies stonewolf for going off track, Just one more post.

what do u mean its frowned upon

LU 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor STRONG DRINK; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

ISA 5:11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow STRONG DRINK; that continue until night, till wine inflame them

PR 31:6 Give STRONG DRINK unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

PR 20:1 Wine is a mocker, STRONG DRINK is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

JUD 13:4 Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor STRONG DRINK, and eat not any unclean thing:

ISA 28:7 But they also have erred through wine, and through STRONG DRINK are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through STRONG DRINK, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through STRONG DRINK; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

LE 10:9 Do not DRINK wine nor strong DRINK, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

NU 6:3 He shall separate himself from WINE and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of WINE, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

not good to drink if a person is a christian, You and I both know that 'wine' or 'grape juice' are mear symbols of jesus's blood.

Those quotes appear to be from the old testament. You'll remember that the old testament also forbids swine (pork, ham, bacon etc.) but Christians eat pig by the gigatonnes. I believe that the reason for this is that Jesus is believed to have said that 'it is not what goes into the mouth that is foul, but what comes out'. Therefore the old testament can be ignored for things that are eaten and drunk according to this view.

So alcohol or wine is accepted into Christian culture and the fact that it is served at churches is proof that these old testament edicts have been ignored by the men of religion. I believe even the Jews have completely ignored the restriction on wine and they consume it during their festivals and religious rituals ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosher_wine )

The only religion that appears to take this commandment seriously and to the letter is Islam which forbids wine absolutely.

  14. It appears that when I use Firefox that I am able to register. There was no 'type in a code' requirement and the software seems to have been changed.

    http://ethnobotany-australia.net/phpBB2-2....opic.php?t=4420

So everyone can just register at the old forum I guess and start afresh? It appears people have been registering and posting for a while as already ovserved.

Does anyone think it's a bad idea to join up there? Who modified the software anyhow and when?

It appears that registrations started up again on the 12 Nov 2006, and at least 700 spam bots have registered on the forum bringing the member number up to 2800 or so.

  15. Gomaos, perhaps you should have put a big STICKY post up in all the subforums telling people the new address and that it will be up in a few days.

That may redirect the people to the new place.

and if you had any idea what you are talking about you knew that that exact thing had been done by chemikazi..

Can you post the URL for it?

The only thing I've noticed is that on your section where you are moderator "Vascular Plants"...

    http://ethnobotany-australia.net/phpBB2-2....ewforum.php?f=1

there are no sticky posts redirecting people at all that I can ascertain. Perhaps I'm seeing something else but it even appears that you replied to someone on the old forum regarding transplanting some plants only today. Maybe the forum software's date feature is corrupted?

  16. I didn't think this was worth posting, but then again, she DID make Hoodia famous in the USA, and that means there is an ethnobotanical connection.

Didn't she just have a baby? To an unknown father? I guess the rest of the world that has nothing better to do will be waiting with baited breath who will claim the baby. I did feel very sorry for her losing her son the way she did though - I wish the details would have been more publicised to warn others of the risks of combining recreational drugs with antidepressants.

Terrible stuff. Lost her 20 year old son to a drug cocktail some weeks ago I believe. With a new baby girl who is being contested by an ex boyfriend and the current husband for less than honorable reasons (money) it's really messy. She looked whacked out in footage of an interview she gave several days ago.

And the video of her final moments have apparently been sold for an undisclosed sum to paparazzi vultures. Sickening stuff.

I questioned the validity or worth of the post too and would have no issues at all with this post being put into the deletion queue if desired.

  17. i haven't had wine in .....six months? i go through phases. that aside you wouldn't be privy to that lest i relinquished the information. there's no plausible way i'll vomit as i'm nowhere near that drunk. at my age we hope we're aware of our 'limits'. ;)

p.s. have you smelled your lips lately?

No need to be so defensive there evo. It wasn't as if anyone said you were a wino... you whiner ;)

  18. it's a conspiracy against you. everyone knows what you really are, sobriquet. no point trying to hide your true self. nothing is as it appears to be.

I haven't had enough (or any for that matter) wine to understand exactly what you mean there evolutionNth, but I like your move of logging on while drunk. It seems to allow one some sort of leeway in terms of posting nonsense

Maybe there has to be a new policy on drunk members; or perhaps you are taking a lead from my club analogy and you're close to doing a technicolour yawn on the new carpet that's been installed in this place. I hope you can keep your drink down.

  19. you're on drugs, sob. if you choose to log in as invisible it makes you an 'anonymous member'.

edit: can't spell anonymous after liter of wine.

I've never even seen that feature since my browser is almost always logged in automatically whenever I open it.

Edit: Aha. I never even hit the log in button but have now spotted the feature. Nice touch and thanks for the tip.

  20. .... and the reason there were so few visitors to the new eba was that many ppl didn't know about the new site and simply kept logging in and posting in the old eba

Gomaos, perhaps you should have put a big STICKY post up in all the subforums telling people the new address and that it will be up in a few days.

That may redirect the people to the new place.

  21. I have to say that this forum has one of the most unusual policies on editing of posts that I've seen. Some forums restrict editing to a certain time period after a post for correction of elementary spelling or grammatical errors and some forums don't allow editing at all once the post goes through (but usually require a preview before hitting the final post button).

I think integrity of the threads is important to be honest. It allows honest appraisal of a thread at some point in the future and does not give room to sanitisation or editing to create a false representation of events. I haven't seen that sort of malicious back editing on this forum, but to require that people go into threads after the event and delete or edit things distorts the flow of events and makes some subsequent posts appear to be nonsensical.

The "Hot Asian Chick" thread was a case in point that turned thread integrity into a fiasco in what was basically an off topic joke thread.

It's like asking the stenographer at court to go back and erase and modify certain things after the event; or for government Hansards to be edited. To me it is anathema. If a mistake was made and an apology offered there should be no need to modify the post since that means that no one who reads that thread later knows what transpired. Why must we revise history?
