  1. Hey Auxin,

to answer your question, once in february and once in march, i dissolved 2 tblspn' s(i know, REAL scientific) of msg, and 1 tspn of sugar per gallon of water. i also ground up 1 adult multivitamin high in trace minerals and 1 calcium, per gallon. when the water cooled to around 110f i added white widow mycorrhizal powder as directed, and then watered regularly. i also watered with coconut juice a few times last spring as well, just randomly when i would buy a coconut with the kids anyway. i got alotta flowers this year, but again that could just be the weather we had in southern california from even last summer throughout (the pachanoi flowers at a local theme park were bustn this year as well). I think the sure way to get flowers is to grow your cactus to maturity. the hunt for hormone induced flowering is for early column flowering or hard-to-flower types like tbm or whatever. i just like having fun in my cactus garden and messing around. i bap'd my first areoles this summer as well this summer. that was pretty successful. :)

a few of my buddies on this forum, and some from other groups are gearing up to do some more calculated experiments this winter and spring with msg, which im sure they'll post on this thread, or i can share from others if/when i see stuff. cheers!

  2. i tried msg this spring and had an EPIC year of flowering! Who knows tho, there were no controls, and it could have been from ANYthing else in their growing enviroment. I may try some experiments next spring with some controls involved. I have read some pretty conclusive articles on it, and a few "ma&pa" testimonials promising results, particularly from the China/Japan/Thailand farmers...

  3. the offshoots are definitely not typical of echinocereus either, they usually pup from the base and cluster, but cactus never cease to amaze me. the specimen would be large if its is echinoc, but i saw a guy selling them on FB in 10g pots they were MASSIVE. Good luck figuring it out. Flowers will help.

EDIT: here are some large (imo) echinocereus in 10g pots,,, they can get pretty big in pots

  4. a name for any seed grown plant is fitting, such as all the named icaro sourced seeds that have producued standouts that are now cloned by their name. If you only labeled it bk08611.4 there would be great ambiguity to the identity of which one. BK still sells seedlings of it to this day, there are probably thousands of them. Some of the seedlings germinated crested and others mutated. Furthermore he sourced seeds again from the same local in 2014. From my understanding the BK08's are from the 2008 trip, not 1986. btw, i think Leyenda is not only great sounding but very fitting.

Here is a pic BK shared of the 08611.4 mother plant with EG from his website Trichocereus.net. The field trip notes and even dvd's are available for purchase from ss... if thats what you want spend your cash on when you buy from them

  5. Selenicereus for young seedlings (1 weeks to 3 months old), Harrisia and Trichocereus as a permanent rootstock (for Ariocarpus and Turbinicarpus for example). Pereskioskiopsis for fast growing columnar species.

Astrophytum does wonderfully on 5 cms of Selenicereus for at least 3 years.

is there a certain species of selenicereus that works best??
