    Activated charcoal vs. GA3

I imagine that the activated charcoal might be useful with seeds that contain chemical germination inhibitors as it would absorb them from the seed. however that is a different dormancy mechanism than GA3 works with I would go with the GA3 as it is a much more general treatment for recalcitrant or poorly viable seed use in low concentration.

    what's wrong with this loph?

The lower part of the stem where it joins the graft looks like orange rot however the damage to the top parts where the aereoles have unfolded from the meristem looks more like spider mite or some other kind of insect damage.

First time Reishi student seeking some guidance or links

hmmm thanks for that. No idea I'm just going by what I was told from the person who gave it to me who is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to native fungi genetics but perhaps is a little behind on this one.

There are also native reishis genetically similar to G. lucidum enough to be considered the same species. Growing on the host trees (Albizzia) used for the indian sandalwood plantations in the ord river area up north WA.

Do I need to do anything special to my acacia seeds?

yes bong water works for smoke sensitive seeds which acacias are not. they require heat or nicking of the seed coat to allow imbibition.

good to have something relatively positive and non sensastional on mainstream TV however this was poorly researched and poorly made. bummer.

    A new focus for biosecurity

it's great that they are reassessing their methods, but I don't think this quote is particularly meaningful. The number of species found is not very important, it's the percentage of containers that contained an exotic species. There will only be a relatively small number of species commonly shipped around the world, what's important is how often they are found because no doubt a few will be found a lot more than the others.

    Grow controller

I am not using any control devices, just sensors. The Arduino costs about $40. Then it's just the cost of the sensors: The DHT11 sensors cost about $10 each. The LM33Zs are $4-5 each, the other humidity sensor I have tried (can't remember model number) cost about $20 because it was analog and a bit more accurate than the DHT11s, but I don't think that's necessary for my purposes (assuming I can get the DHT11s to work with more than one sensor at once, which I have been having trouble with).

    Grow controller

It depends on what you are trying to do and which sensor you are using. The code I have is for a LM33Z and it doesn't actually run in Arduino - it runs in Processing and talks to Arduino via an Arduino sketch called Firmata which passes the data to Processing. The reason for that is so that I can publish the data to Pachube. However, now that I have moved on to the DHT11 I am struggling to make it talk to more than one sensor at a time. The DHT11 is a digital sensor and getting the data off it is a bit more complex. I have good code to read the data for a single sensor but I'm having trouble with more than one. If you have or are getting either of these sensors let me know and I'll post my code. Not much point cluttering the board with code if no one's going to use it.
  10. Very happy to admit that maybe I was wrong about the Sea Shepherd's tactics. Hopefully this is not just a temporary win.

    Grow controller

I'm using LM33z temp sensors, they are only accurate to +/- 2ºc, but for mushroom growing or beer brewing purposes that should be fine. Happy to post the code if you like. I have also recently purchased some DHT11 humidity/temp breakout boards, they're digital and have a 1 wire interface. Not accurate and can only be polled every 2 seconds but again should be fine.

  13. commercial or non commercial will be fine (in fact commercial will be better). Non commercial means it strictly prohibits commercial use; commercial means all uses are acceptable. I think due to the importance of this issue many people would be fine to license use of their images even if the CC license they are listed under may be a bit different to this use; just send them a PM and ask.

Fungimentary: The Magic Mushrooms of Balingup

The funny thing is, everyone calls their local Psilocybes, whether subs or cubes, gold tops. Considering there are more people in the world with cubes as their local species, and they definitely have a more golden top, I think that they should really get precedence for that name. Copper tops - or just subs - are much better names for subs. As for blue meanies, there is really no argument. That name should always refer to Panaeolus cyanescens - they are much bluer, and much meaner than either subs or cubes .

    Seeds Australia WAS closing down

Seriously people this is absolutely NOT set in concrete they are simply making a proposition and asking for submissions to discuss it it is totally possible that they will read our well-researched, carefully written submissions and realise they have been making fools of themselves and throw the whole thing out. Perhaps that's a bit much to hope for, but we definitely have a chance not only to hold back many of these changes, but to make a big noise and educate the general public about it at the same time. It's definitely not time to start shutting down important community services like Seeds Australia.
  16. You should never use any image without the express permission of the creator, regardless of whether it's for commercial or noncommercial purposes. A good source of available images is Flickr's Creative Commons search - all my photos are available under a non-commercial license. If you want to use one of mine just contact me and I will send you a high res version. http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

    PC/pachanot as heterozygous

After growing cacti and marvelling at the diversity in Trichocereus and trying to put names to the things in my collection and the things I see in other peoples' The funny thing I noticed when I was in the Andes was the remarkable similarity of the plants in the environment and the ubiquity and consistency of single forms across large regions I really think most of these unique and weird entities we argue about are just products of hybridisation in horticulture, or else artefacts of biased collecting of very unusual specimens in the wild. Go to South America, spend some time looking at cacti from Chile to Ecuador and in several parts of Peru as I did. It wasn't a scientific survey by any means and I rarely got my hand lens out. But the overwhelming feeling I got from it is that all this intellectualisation is just that These cacti are just like any other plants in their natural environment, they may co-occur with sympatric congeners every now and then but largely not And I rarely had any uncertainty as to which 'species' they belonged to. The only exception to this would be the weird bridgesii/peruvianus things growing at Copacabana which were discussed in a recent thread, I really couldn't figure those guys out.
  18. You will also have to include a name with your submission, so you would have to use a false name which would probably count as fraud. I have noted that many of the submissions I have read on other issues always include "thankyou for the opportunity to make a submission". Just a bit of politeness won't hurt ;).

There could be big cats in Aus?

I recently read in the WA Dept of Environment and Conservation's 'Land for Wildlife' program newsletter a discussion about big cats in WA, it was mostly focused on 'scratching trees' where claw marks can be seen where very big cats (due to the height off the ground of the claw marks) have scratched. Interesting to see this in a Govt. publication.
  21. This is just one of those things where a graduate public servant chucked a list together on a friday afternoon to get the thing finished. As soon as anyone who knows what they're talking about has a look at it they will forget most of that stuff. Still, a good opportunity to make a submission and get some balancing views out there and make sure they know we are on to them.

    Grow controller

I've been playing with Arduino too, maybe we should have an Arduino thread I am about to start following this at the moment: http://www.freetronics.com/pages/online-thermometer As for programming language, Arduino uses a version of Processing. Learning processing would be the best way to start.

Yeah I don't think this guy really understands much about plant taxonomy. He means species when he says genus and genus when he says family.
