  1. Every time I think I'm starting to get a handle on this id business, something comes along which completely confuses me again. *sigh* .. so many variations based on location/growing conditions etc... You must be pretty pissed off about those snails, I certainly would be...
  2. On the website they're listed as $4 for 25 seeds, I can't see a 'bulk' listing? How much are you looking at for a 1gram pack as described? Any issues with postage to NZ?

    cactus garden update

That's awesome, wish I had somewhere to plant a garden like that!

    Cacti ID please!

The ribs are too angular - most trichs have much more rounded ribs. Here is another mature one: http://mgonline.com/cactus02.jpg It is listed as active here: http://www.thenook.org/archives/tek/activecacti.htm Although how it compares to other trichs I have no idea.

    Cacti ID please!

    Cereus definitely. Peruvianus probably.
  6. I need help transporting a large (1.5m) cactus from Mt Wellington to Manukau heights - only about 10km but too far to walk!. It must be trasported standing up. There is a box of beer in it for the helping hand.. This is the beast here:
  7. I have put the paper over the top to difuse the light as suggested, but as you can see it makes it quite dim under the lights - is this how it's supposed to be? The lid is transparent. Does everything else look right? Distance of lights? etc? Any other comments?

    My first seed grow setup

Thanks for the tips, I have swapped for paper towels as you suggested, and it lets a decent amount more light through. I guess my only concern now is whether it's warm enough in my lounge. Only time will tell.

    Friendly neighbour.

Holy beautiful pachanoi! Awesome plant and wicked score on the cuttings!

    My collection has doubled!

    Hahahaha that's awesome! *saves pic*
  11. Closeups of my new seedlings from faslimy: Not sure what this one is...? And 3x this guy - grown from seeds labelled as Bridgeseii: And this not from faslimy, my $4 roughy.. not sure what he is.. possible macro/peruvianus. Whole herd (minus 2):

    My collection has doubled!

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you didn't know the names. I knew you knew them, except for maybe the macro looking one If that old lady one does take off this spring you're welcome to a cutting/pup. I suspect it'll throw off a pup or two given the damage she inflicted on it removing the pup off the bottom. As for luck, yeah I have been lucky, but I've also paid too much for some very average plants too .. you should post more pics of your specimens.. I nearly died when I saw the size of some of them... and all flawless..

    My collection has doubled!

Thanks! I hope the one in pic 5 takes off this spring - the person I purchased it off only had a couple of cacti and didn't look like she knew how to look after them. I suspect far too much water and not enough sunshine.

    Bargain TBM's

Nice find! Looks like bridgeseii to me, and you have a rare 4-ribbed guy! I wouldn't worry about drying out the roots, but I would get them out of those piddly pots asap, and very gently break up their rootballs before putting into slightly larger pots (10cm). They should pull through. I'm no expert so no doubt I'll be corrected if this is the wrong thing to do.
  15. Thanks for the comments everyone. The real thanks should go to Corromandel Cacti for growing such an awesome plant! If you're ever looking for cacti and succulents/tropicals in NZ, definitely look them up - their nursery is incredible! I haven't had a real close look at the main tip (it's taller than I am in it's pot), perhaps that's what they have done. Hahahahaha .. true I hadn't thought about that Unfortunately we're only renting the place we live in at the moment, and it's a daunting thought to think about digging it up if we move in a few years tiime! If it was just a single tall branch then I'd consider it. My collection is at capacity (deck space heh), so some of the 2-3 foot cacti will find their way into the ground this spring, to make room for more purchases and pot size upgrades as necessary.
  16. I'm not 100% sure what it is. Best guesses are a peruvian/bridgesoid hybrid. I'd like to think it's macrogonus though. I'm also curious as to why it's branched so much - can this be induced? It doesn't look to have suffered any trauma - it's blemish free... I can't stop wandering onto the deck to look at it
  17. Ok, first of all here is the big guy and how I managed to get him home: He measures almost exactly 5 foot. Alice - at NZ$35, this guy could be the bargain of the century. The nursery was horrified at the price their auction got to! I'm more than stoked, I'm over the flippin moon! . Safely installed on my deck: Closeup showing young and old spines:
  18. There's a link to the forum sql database posted if you read the drivel you get from clicking on the forum links. I'm trying to dl it now in case nobody else gets it. F'n script kiddie no lifers!
  19. Free download: http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/ Note that the screenshots show all it's gadgety features enabled. The first thing I usually do with a new opera install is turn them all off. Opera can be a minimal or as cluttered as you like. Yes, you should never install/run more than one anti-virus at once, they tend to interfere with each other. Having 2 installed usually ends up giving you less protection than one.
  20. I agree with all said above, with the addition of using either Firefox or Opera as your browser. Although Firefox has become a bit too popular for it's own good and it's security holes are starting to be exploited just like IE. Also, Microsoft Antisyware (now Windows Defender) is a good free download which is getting better and better. http://thenook.org is back and safe with a message explaining the situation. Forums are still not back up yet, 404 error.
  21. Definitely not, unless your virus definitions are fully up to date, windows fully patched, and you use a browser other than IE. Nothing to see anyway, just the message I posted above.
  22. I see what you're getting at... what is at the doubleh page? I'm pretty well protected here, but I wouldn't chance using IE to open that link... In opera it doesn't seem to do anything?
  23. It's a 304mb file called dump_nanook_forum.sql I'm running sql server for my wsus, anyone know how I could go about mounting this to check it's contents?
  24. It's not a link, it's in plain text: maestro_black says: "Go away troll. If you made some money from it, then have fun spending it. Since i dont think we have any members in russia, i guess we could just block all of russia from connecting to here. And perhaps someone can explain to me why it is that all the script kiddys come from russia or other ex soviet countries. I mean is it just a breeding place for low iq retards who are to lazy to actually work out how to do proper penetration stuff." I hate you, ??????? ??????.......... I have again got access, already not through a forum, I have removed all, sql base too you dowhload sql base on this forum http://rapidshare.de/files/16530153/dump_nanook_forum.rar.html As you can see, it's a rar file hosted on rapidshare.de I've got 90% so far.. I'll let you know what it is.
