  1. Looks like pachanoi to me, but it hasn't had an easy life. I have a 1m+ pach which was grown in a 15cm pot which looks like that, with the narrow ribs. Have put it in the ground so with a bit of luck it'll fatten up nicely.

    stones and moisture

Never had a problem with stones here, but I've only been growing cacti for about a year. I did notice this spring that many cacti surrounded by pummice (2-5mm) rather than decorative stones abot (10mm diameter) pupped. None surrounded by stones pupped.

    Ebay

House and income for $300k.. pretty good if you ask me. This guy wants $415k for land and a cacti shed! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Property...on-78874234.htm

    New garden!

Thanks jactus You have pm! For those wanting cuttings of the same as the big guy here, it's not exactly drop of a hat, but I can get them. Early next year I'll get another one for propogating

    New garden!

Took a small garden and redug the whole thing to a depth of about 8 inches. Fcuk me there's a lot of dirt in 8" of garden! It's only about 3 square meters. Anyway, it's now got about 60l of scoria (layer), 40l of pumice, 40l of compost, and 40l of potting mix mixed into the existing clayish topsoil. I actually wanted to raise it a bit, but that didn't happen as I ran out of soil. I've planted a couple of cacti and a spiky pollyfilla (sp?) . I'll probably rearrange it again once my big pachanoi cutting is ready for planting, and when I gather up the courage to propogate my big scopucola. I'm buggered. Will take pics of the plants in place later. Here's the garden: And a closeup showing the soil:

    my doorstop is flowering

Quite a looker you have there Congrats
  7. Hey guys and gals What's the protocol for posting pics of a plant which is illegal in the country you're posting from? Is it a case of 'a friend of a friend has one of these and sent me some pics' ? Or just go for it, or keep it to yourself and never share... ??

    New garden!

Thanks I figured that if I cut it up I would be burying about 10cm for each piece anyway, so there's 30-40cm wasted which ever way I do it. With regard to rot, it's the start of summer here, and I have made sure the soil is nicely draining A cutting this size should push roots out very quickly! Fingers crossed! I'm also keen on any pups it has reaching the same diameter, which is a lot more likely keeping it as one piece. And yeah, it's not about propogation for this guy, I know where I can get more of the same no problem at all :D None of my cacti have been assayed. The smaller blue piece is a faslimy special, not sure if it's been id'd. Have to wait a couple more weeks now to be able to afford to finish the garden!

    New garden!

Well, just a quick update with the morning's work in the garden: Here's my big cutting in place, and a few other plants. The big one is burried a foot or more deep, so little chance of it falling over I hope.
  10. Hey jactus, you'll find that most around here are discreet about cacti sources - they respect the plants, as opposed to mad teenagers out to get a buzz from stolen pedro. Obviously just take care not to let anyone you don't know well onto or nearto the property if trading. You're a lucky fella
  11. Heh, sorry forgot to reply to that. The vendor cut and applied sulphur as I watched, so I didn't get a chance to lick the flesh.
  12. Hrm.. I could have sworn this was pach.. but on closer inspection it doesn't seem to have any spines at all.. which leads me to think it could be scop? Sorry about the pic quality.
  13. Here's a couple more pics, one of the tip and one of the spines lower down the plant. Pity I didn't have my camera to take pix of the mother plant :/ If you're serious about a clipping send me a pm - the seller had more of the same, for a very reasonable price ($50NZ for this cutting)

    Decorative gravel

I've become a little bit dubious about anything above about 7mm, I suspect it may restrict pupping. This spring, most of my cacti surrounded by 2-5mm pummice have pupped prolifically, but none at all of the plants surrounded by decorative stones 7-10mm have pupped.
  15. Coolness Yeah it is quite heavy.. I'm trying to devise a method of supporting it when I plant it.. A couple of other kiwis have id's this as Juuls, although it's different to this one also id'd as Juuls: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/evo...MG_8898copy.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/evo...ts/IMG_6269.jpg
  16. Biggest photos? 800x600 @ 78kb? Spines have not been removed, I helped the seller cut this off the parent plant, which is huge! Doesn't really look scopish to me either, but the lack of spines made me wonder.. Yep, me the monster cacti hunter :D There's another cutting this size up for sale that I hope to procure also :D

    New garden!

Thanks man. I picked up my big pach (could be scop? will post pic tomorrow) today. We're renting too, but that garden (in fact all the gardens around this house) have pretty hideous plants in them, so I'll dig them out one by one as I need more space. Mrs said no more cacti on the deck, so the garden it was! I should be able to transplant them if I ever have to move

    Large cutting ID?

Cool! It's got a heart on the side!
  19. Hi Torsten. Can you please point me in the direction you got this info from? I have seen the NZ Biosecurity list (it's quite old and hasn't been updated). Pereskopsis is definitely not on it. If it's not on the list you can't import it.

    Large cutting ID?

I concur. If the spines were shorter it'd be token pachanoi. Some sort of peruvianus/pachanoi hybrid. Regardless, it's a damn nice looking plant. I'm jealous! Never seen one over here!
  21. I assume that's the reason too. Whatever the reason they're illegal to import and grow, so posting pictures could still be incriminating.
  22. Yep, most types of Peres, and Lophora

    Ebay, 3 X pachanoi. 29/11

Regardless of it's potency, it's a great looking plant. I have one just like it :D

    Monstrose Cereus peruvianus.

Here's mine, not as nice looking as you others. I hope to get a multi-headed one in the future: 6 weeks ago the tip was like this: Now, check out the blue growth, about 5 inches in 6 weeks!!! Thanks to the weather warming up, and being inside a small greenhouse

    New gigantic cactus

No idea.. I believe it can be as potent as pachanoi? Didn't take long to get outta the car, once we started moving it we had to keep going or it would have been impossible to start again! hehe. Could the fuzzy areoles be flower buds? :D I really would like to repot it so I can show off the other side, but how on earth would I re-stabilize it? I think I would definitely have to cut it down to a more manageable size?
