    Go to your local horse racing track - poo galore. Then go to one of the feed stores that will undoubtably be in the vicinity of the horse track - and buy a shopping bag worth of hay/straw (no more than $1 or $2) for your 'guinea pig'.

    Chop the straw up and mix this with the poo @ about 70/30 poo/straw. Doesnt need to be nearly exact here, just play around with the ratios.

    The season has slowed in tassie too. The biggest one i have seen was about 14cm high, a stem almost a cm thick and the cap was about 8cm. This was one HUGE mushroom.

    haven't found any young shrooms for a while now, only big crusty/mushy ones :(

    I expect to see alot more of these tubs up here next year. But repect the spawn, don't rape it. If u do, i WISH U ALL THE WORST KARMA IN THE WORLD.

    Why not just get some spawn going yourself to spawn to your chips with? Sub Mycelium is very easy to get going.

    I think the rain today may get tehe odd one to pop up, but they will be very few and far between (perhaps wetter spots by rivers).

    The average for May is 120mm, yet we have only had 109mm, so far, for the whole of 2006! Its not looking good... maybe a few more weeks until there are any good solid patches.

    ok here goes..

    came back from Bal this morning after a starlight expedition - no shrooms ! :(

    only ones found were some large (7 - 15cm) brown-top, yellow gill ugly f***ers.

    after some moderate rain tue + wedsday and some icy nights we thought it might have been a go, but not quite yet apparently. bit of a bummer but such an amazingly beautiful night walk and exit at sunrise.

    the surface layer of the needles was moist but a cm or so under was pretty dry - definately need a substantial downpour to activate these little fellas (maybe >15mm in a day at a guess).

    That poor balingup forest cops a bit of a beating doesnt it? A LOT of people hunt there...

    i am led to believe it will give more even pinset and is usful in types prone to overlay

    after flush 1 - dunk it b4 flush 2, and 3 , and 4 etc...

    anyone tried weak seasol or urea dunks?

    I have tried a weak seaweed extract dunk - hard to say if it increased the second flush or not, but the second flush was certainly really good.

    I think the key is using a weak soltion of seaweed extract when mixing the substrate to field capacity - instead of plain water.

    cheers, thinking bout two days time - too early? i'm not v. exp. with temps either - what exactly would you call 'cold enough'?

    Please man, make sure you do put up this post - Im keen to know as well. I think that the one storm today might not have a massive impact (considering just how dry its been), but it should bring a few up.

    I purchased a cubensis spore print from a dude online.. it looks good but im waiting for summer to use it..

    I opened it to look at it quickly when i first got it and wrapped it back up.. i didn't breath on it or anything, (i was careful with it). the guy then told me because i had opened it it was usless. your saying this is not true?

    Yes Im saying this is not true - you should be fine.

    use a bit big enough to fold up neatly so's not to wreck the print

    I fold the prints - I dont think it matters at all as long as all the edges are sealed making a little 'parcel' that you can 'unwrap' when you want to get at your spores. Folding the print does no harm...

    Yes you can man - make sure you wash the peice really really well first.

    So, are you saying, that our favourite fungus is popping up down south now??

    Just because something was in the open air for 5 seconds doesn't mean it is immediately useless.

    I agree 100% - I always start Liquid Cultures straight from prints, in te open air on a (clean) kitchen bench.

    Not once has one contaminated.

    Even when I first started taking prints, I never sterilised the foil first - and have still never had a contaminated jar.

    Use your prints, dont throw them because you think they are stuffed!

    I still think that the fact you generally havent eaten any shrooms for a few months makes the first trip of the season seem stronger than normal.

    G'day all

    Just need sum advice on wat is a good, normal amount of grain spawn to use when spawning to straw/poo or wood? I've only ever used a 50/50 ratio, which I know is overkill, but hey, the more spawn, the better/faster colonization.

    But now I want to be a little bit more economically practical, so just need to know.

    I was thinking 1:4 is great and even 1:10 would be sufficient.

    does any1 know what the commercial standard is?

    And I will only be pasturizing substrates.

    I think at a commercial mushroom farm they use only 1% spawn - but they also have bulk commercial pasturising rooms where they pasturise the substrate for 3 days, then use large machines to mix the spawn evenly through the substrate before incubating.

    I think that in our applications, contamination problems are more common and seem to occur at the lower spawn rates.

    I think you could easily get away with 1:4 but any less and you increase you chances of contamination.

    Its easy to make spawn so IMO, its better to use a higher ratio rather than losing your project to contamination and having to start over from scratch.
