  1. Yes. Very pretty. I gather the seventeen grams dry was an approximation by eye, as I'm sure you wouldn't do anything naughty like pick them. ;)

Unless of course you were completely paranoid and bought into the obviously ridiculous and un-planned 'assigned' 'laws' that people in this country are supposed to be 'governed' by.

Enjoy your 17gms of life changing subs - I'm willing to bet my job that you're responsible enough to not do anything stupid with them and are therefore not going to spend the rest of your days behind bars because of your find, and not going to jeapordise anyone else in this country by admitting it.

AND, more importantly, I think most self respecting and experienced law enforcers respect this, their job is to protect a society from assholes and wrong doing and with time they become more aware of this if they are committed to it.

I am positive that taking a stroll in the blue mountains and then having a life changing experience in the comfort and safety of your own lounge room that you have worked so hard to acquire for yourself is not going to be one of the problems they need to put time and energy into, paralleled with the real issues out there that I'm sure we're all subconsciously aware of. Simply put, it's not a problem.

I don't mean to offend ballzac, I just think it's of up-most importance to stand tall for what you believe in - and that's what I believe.

  2. Hey Gen, I think I can help you with your questions.

Bird seed is fine to use over rye, depending on what you are trying to colonise. If you are growing sclerotia forming species, then they say rye is the preferred choice, but they will still grow on any grain.

Grain generally isn't used to fruit from like you do with the pf cakes - colonised grain is generally crumbled and used as 'spawn'.

'Spawning' is the act of mixing a colonised grain with a bulk substrate, eg. straw or horse poo, in order to colonise that, and then fruit the colonised mass.

You can however still fruit mushrooms directly from grain - and it is still better than only using the PF tek as the grain will have more nutrients, though it is recommended you use the grain as spawn for best results.

    Edit:

And in answer to your last question, yes you can leave a sterilised jar sitting for a while to see if any contaminants grow, then still innoculate it after this time if everything is ok. I wouldn't bother too much, this waiting time eats into the time you could be watching your mycelium growing... :)

  3. Yeah I see..

Seems to be a slight difference in cystidia mostly.

Is there a way to check without a microscope?

I'm not sure whether it's subs or cyans I've been finding now, my life might have all been a lie

Another major macro difference appears to be the colour of the stipe (stem) - off grey/dirty white on subs, but snow white on cyans.

  4. The wavy cap seems to be a specific genotype to VIC, I never see any photos of wavy caps from WA or SA, and certainly have never seen anything more than 'maybe a lil wavy but not really' in NSW.

I've seen this trait in countless WA specimens - its seems most directly related to the age of the specimen...

  5. my old flatmate, a calm dope smoker is now a full blown diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. He lost the plot in the last few years and for some reason i cant help but thinking it has something to do with the ghost.

I can't help think it had something to do with the dope - and a pre-disposition to the condition.

  6. If you're a perfectionist, then drinking glasses ARE as perfect as you can get if you ask me, because they work perfectly... And guess what, $2 for 8 jars at the Op shop, so you can actually get started straight away, sounds even more perfect to me.

Trust me on this, unless you are pressure cooking grain in jars, don't waste your time stuffing about with mason jars.

  7. In the above pics, note the differences - gallerina has rusty brown spores, and orange gills, and has a ring on the stem. The stem is brown in colour as opposed to a sub which has an off white/grey stem.

  8. As stated, be very very careful - gallerina can look very similar to subs and will make you one very, very sick person, best case scenario.

They can be very similar in appearance...

    Juicy sub? -

    post-1432-1208518351_thumb.jpg

    Nope, deadly gallerina -

And side by side comparison of a gallerina (from above) and a sub -

  9. You might find a few random ones popping up, but most likely a tad too cold there now. I just got back from NNSW and it rained non stop the whole time, but a few chekcs of some paddocks reveled nothing.. it was quite cold overnights.

Up SE QLD way you might get a few random ones popping up but you will have to be lucky and pick your spot well.

  10. That's also a very good point that cannot be disputed. But while GCF's tone might have been a bit harsh for some (not me, I like colourful opinions on this forum), this is a great example of a free market where someone has offered something at "x" value, and a 'competitor' has offered similar product for 'y' value'. In this particular instance of non-monopolised free-market small-window product advertisinig, it just so happens that the 'y' value has undercut the 'x' value by $26. AFter having calculated some quick fiscal reconciliations, I've determined latter is much better value (ie FREE - actually at a currency cost to the 'seller' as he is springing 50cents for a stamp)

But of course we should argue about the strains...... does the savings-favoured vendor have the strains that the $26 vendor does? The more expensive seller has a choice of product. Are they rare & exotic strains ? Will the buyer care about strains, or is the market for experienced myco's covered by free swaps within a subcommunity? While vendor 'y' doesn't stipulate on strains, he selflessly gives good recommendations with the FSRE reference. And despite vendor 'x' making a deliberately misleading statement as to importation law, there are now two other options available if one wishes to avoid the $26 price tag.

SO ultimately, there are choices here in this thread, and 'willing to buy them' is still an open option. Choice of 4 strains from whisperz for $26, an unspoken strain from GCF for ZILTCH, or the European Spore ring (mucho strain choices) for a couple of Euro's international delivery.

From here people are free to make their own choices.

Well put, but some people who are new would probably not know about those services - I neglected to mention the fact that if someone was stupid enough to pay $26 for a print then they would also probably be too stupid to find out about services such as the FSRE or the FSRC.

I suppose now they have no excuse.

  11. Hyphalknot, well theres no additional cost in the fruiting setup (however cheap it is), no additional waiting time, no chance of fucking the fruiting process and losing everything through inexperience, less conspicuous, faster turnaround, etc etc.

If we are talking about cubensis, you can fruit them in a shopping bag so I don't think cost or experience should come into play here. If you are experienced enough to colonise a jar of mycelium, you should be MORE than experienced enough to fruit it. Or, you could fruit it invitro. And for the sake of this discussion, if you are only dosing once a month then the faster turnaround should not be a factor either. You can easily go from grain to fruits in that period.

If you are only going to dose once a month (or less), then why bother growing a three year supply of dried, susceptible to degradation stuff instead of the efficiently correct amount of fresh stuff?

The fruits from one colonised jar of grain are MUCH easier to store than a fresh fully colonised jar of mycelium, considering the dry, powdered fruits will take up much less space and they will last as long as you want them to if stored correctly (and correct storing isn't difficult - simply dry completely, powder and store in an airtight/light tight jar in the fridge).

Dosing would be much easier as you would simply need to weigh out the desired amount of material (simply spoon out a bit of powder) and consume however you like (tea, capsules etc.).

If you put your product in capsules before you store it, it's then even easier to dose (pre measured) and much easier to conceal, if you were to say store them in an old vitamin bottle.

And lastly, mushrooms are beautiful to look at.

A more apt analogy would be, whether or not you'd wait for Trichocereus flowers (which are more potent) instead of eating flesh.

Except of course, it takes years to get Trichocereus flowers, and the yield would be much, much, much less than from the flesh. It's quite the opposite for mushrooms. A grain jar may yield two doses, whereas if you fruited it you may get 6 or more doses, in as little as 2 or 3 extra weeks.

  12. I think there is no doubt there are actives in the mycelium, but I dont think its a productive use of the mycelium. If you gotten to the stage of a fully colonised jar, why not fruit it?

I compare it to growing an MJ plant and not letting it flower, and instead smoking the leaves.
