  1. Haha, how did i know the first comment would be on my choice of beer.:P

Yes i drink VB, have done for about 15 odd years now so no point tryin to tell me how shit you think it is lads an ladettes. If telling me my choice in beer is shit makes your choice of beer taste better, then go for it, im not here to argue.

I see people get very passionate about their beer!

Nice mushroom passive, that would almost be a meal for two....

  2. You probably could yes - but popcorn would be hard to sterilise properly by steaming is my guess.

You would probably be better off doing the pf tek but with polyfill filters in the lid to speed up colonisation if you don't have a pressure cooker.

But, obviously it does work sterilising popcorn that way as demonstrated - I would just be a little careful, maybe boil for minimum of 2 hours just to be sure.

  3. i gather from people who grow them at home that this fungus requires a lot ov care & attention to grow, damaging the mycelium & opening it up to 'infection' doesn't seem like a good idea.

on a practical note pinching rather than pulling means you don't end up w/soil all over your shrooms.

If the people who grow them at home are referring to cubensis rather than subaeruginosa (which is much more commonly grown at home) this is true - but cubensis is a dung loving mushroom and you will find that the wood-loving mycelium (subaeruginosa) is incredibly hardy compared with dung lovers, and the two cannot be compared.

For example - you can leave a colonised wood-loving species to completely dry out over summer with no water whatsoever for months on end, and as soon as it gets wet again it re-animates and starts growing.

Contamination isn't a major issue when dealing with wood lovers as there aren't a lot of molds that will readily grow on wood substrates. This can illustrated by keeping a few stem butts from some subs and laying them in between some sheets of cardboard that have been soaked in water and drained. No sterilisation is needed and if patience is noted then the cardboard should get colonised by the mycelium and this can then be buried in a new woodchip bed to start another patch reasonably easily.

  4. Mate they won't be dry enough if they were only out for a day - if the stems on them don't *snap* when you bend them (should be like a twig) then they will likely grow mould or worse if they are in an airtight jar.

Leave them out under a fan for at least 2 or more days, then put them in the jar with some 'damp rid' or other dessicant (even dry rice works ok) to suck out the last of the moisture.

  5. i think its more akin to picking an apple with a little bit of twig or maybe a leaf attached.. :P

but theyre apples an oranges really,.. it really is better to cut the stems at the ground because then you leave any developing primordia to develop and you can come back and photograph them a couple of days later!

Agreed, I see no major harm in the practice - after-all it's a fungus, so if you cut the stem butt off and bury it 10 metres away from where you found the first one you are only helping to spread the love.

Collect all your stem butts and bury them in a completely different spot altogether and you hopefully start a new patch!

  6. Hey guys, the magic mushrooms pies are just a gimmick - the locals are cashing in on the town's reputation, and have named their cafe accordingly - with the specialty being their 'magic mushroom pies' - though the ingredients are nothing more than portabello's, shitake and gravy... :P

Undergrounder - I did in fact gather a small handful of gyms just so I didn't come home empty handed, with the intent of eating a few, but I got cold feet and didn't end up trying them - just can't bring myself to eat them after what I have read from other's 'lack' of an experience and bitter taste.

    These were found in WA.

  7. After a long drive, I found a LOT of gym's, but nothing else of any real interest. It was great to get out and about in nature, away from the city, and have an adventure!

And its good to see that the locals are capitalising on the town's reputation... :P

  8. Bejeevus, I was really hoping this wasn't going to turn into a quote fest!

Come on mate, I asked you to read my posts this time, let me repeat something for you again:

"the places I used to go to are in the bush and perhaps the drought has rendered them useless? I just don't know until I go up there. It may prove to be the case that I would be better off looking for well watered woodchip beds this year and I am hoping to see how you guys go before I dedicate any time doing this, thats all."

Don't be an ass hair, of COURSE I read your posts!

I would strongly suggest you read these threads from start to finish, if you are looking for 'proof' before you 'dedicate anytime to doing this' - HERE and HERE.

I am getting tired of saying this and I am surprised that you don't see my point yet which is this.... why would I want to go looking in other spots without knowing that it would most likely be more productive than the places that I am already familiar with? I mean the Idea is to go to the most productive spots is it not?

I think the idea is different for everyone, it's a personal thing.

For me it's about getting out and seeing, touching, experiencing, exploring, interacting, learning and enjoying - with the added buzz of striking gold when you do!

It's all good mate, you're a cool dude and put lots of time and attention to structuring your posts - I just hope you reserve some of that energy for understanding my point and getting out there to have a look!

Perhaps someone has some habitat shots to aid baphomet in his quest?

  9. "My defence for being harsh is frustration at you discounting good advice without trying it."

Like I said I was waiting to compare photos and see how other people go first, I used to spot close to 1000 some days in the country and I am interested to see if people can match these sort of numbers by looking around the city and as I said before "hopefully I will stand corrected" and learn from others so that I wont have to travel so far in future.

One last question then - are you saying that you won't go hunting until you know you will at least find 1000 for your efforts?

  10. Crikey... :o

Far out man, really, all I was getting at was that everyone recommends hunting in wood chip beds, and you see no reason to do it.

Hey man, when it comes to growing most ethnobotanical plants I am a n00b, I do not deny this and I am in awe and appreciation of the knowledge that Torsten and others have and are willing to share, but for you to arrogantly suggest that I need your advice or that of Paul Stamets to find mushrooms in the state that I have lived in my entire life is frustrating and flat out wrong. I may only have a few posts on the board but I'm from the old school mate :P when it comes to mushrooms, I don't need to ask you for shit :bootyshake:

I never offered you any advice other than to listen to the woodchip suggestions, and to get out there and have a look for yourself, albeit a bit harsh.

My defence for being harsh is frustration at you discounting good advice without trying it.

Honestly man, I'm sorry to have upset you so much, that result was far form the intention.

  11. "if i cant come hunting too i may aswell go back to my grassy patch of subs then.."

Like I said mu.. "anyone else who wants to come along is more than welcome", I would be honored if you would join us :)

"arent subs likely to be found on..... Woodchips"

Apparently so but I have never bothered looking. I know Stamets and others recommend looking for woodchip beds and I have seen pictures posted here of people who have found reasonably good patches this way but as far as I am concerned it is not worth my time but perhaps by the end of the season someone will convince me otherwise, anyway what would I know, I'm just a n00b right?.

Well when Stamets gives you advice, and everyone else on this forum gives you advice, and you still don't take it, you are the one who is contributing to filling up threads with useless information.

No-one is going to show you their patches, whether you're willing to drive or not.

You will understand this once you have found one that is easily accessible and yields well that no-one else knows about.

Whether you can drive or not appears to have no impact on sub hunting with the public transport system as it is in Melbourne. Hit the trains/trams/buses and get out there.

My recommendation would be to take the advice form those more experienced to help you along the way before you make any more complaints, and go out and put in some solid hours of hunting before you look for an easy way out.

  12. I haven't seen them in any Kmarts around the city here for at least a year, and when I asked them they said they aren't going to order anymore in.

Plus, the plastic lids they sell on that site (currently sold out) are INVALUABLE and I haven't seen them before in Oz.

  13. hey mate yup they look like them I can definately see bruising in your last pic and of in the one of the prints and dried shrooms. Im not sure about the other few but they look about right just double check all your finds for that blue look and wait till somebody with lots of posts confirms the id.

Amen mate - Good advice, they look good to me too. Spore print the lot until you get familiar with them - nice finds! :)
