  1. Anyone interested in this sort of stuff should give "The Elegant Universe" and "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene a read... both awesome books that deal with a lot of complex physics, but in terms that you can understand

Fabric is probably easier and a little more general, so start with that

Basically everything in the universe travels through space-time at the speed of light... so therefore the faster you travel through space, the slower you have to travel through time

Anyway this page explains things better than I can :)

    Clicky

Have just place a request on two of Brian Greenes books at my local library. Thanks for posting about it.

Hitherto Paul Davies has been my favorite author regards this sort of stuff.

  2. *edit* Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure you don't get good karma for not doing bad things :)

sounds like good karma to me.

He had a choice between two paths.

He chose the more virtuous path and was rewarded beyond his expectations.

  3. “The idea that moving at the speed of light effects time is an even more blatant mistake... in most instances it relates back not to complex math but to the example given that if your in a train moving away from a clock at the speed of light the clock will appear to have stopped... this relates to you catching up with the light reflected off the clock, not time.”

Actually I am sure there is a formula which has shown that time correlates directly with speed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_dilation

    This confuses me.

The first paragraph seems to be suggesting you don't believe in time dilation due to speed and the second statement suggest you do.

  4. How has it been proven? The only test to prove this in my mind would be if two watches were set to the exact same time, one stayed at point A and one was taken on board the plane to point B and then the two were compared afterwards. Was this the test?

    Two atomic clocks where used.

I assume the most accurate at the time.

I think the best proof of time dilation is the subatomic particles created in bubble chambers.

For whatever reasons their life span ( shall we say ) is known and tested and when they are created in bubble chambers moving at great speeds they actually stay in existence longer in correspondance to time dilation predictions.

I don't see any great changes to what we knew before in the experiment.

It seems to me to be a great illustration of the uncertainty principle.

As the time frame was instantaneuos then it seems to me the particle could have come out at infinte speed.

  5. i think there is one thing that is important for those responses. have all of the responders workes these shifts for 15 years!!!!

I have worked them for 22 years.

I really don't think it is taking that much of a toll on me.

In the past I have done full time study and full time nightshift and that definately took a toll.

  6. Restavit which is available from pharmacy works pretty well.

I find half a 25MG tablet works really well without any hangover in the morning.

Not sure about its interactions with other medications so it might not be any better the alcohol to have around the house.

  7. I often do rotating shifts but for a while I have been doing nighshift.

I always revert back to normal pattern for my days off. For instance I finished work this morning but shall avoid having a kip until it is dark tonight. Small amount of alcohol and I sometimes sleep for up to 12 hours.

  8. physical exercise?

    Yes physical exercise.

Have heard this mentioned a few times on ABC news radio and I think also a new scientist podcast.

The first time I heard it it made sense from the perspective that for instance. I cycle for exercise most days.

The first time I rode my road bike, it was quiet twicthy and unstable compared to previous bikes I had riden. But these days it feels very smooth and today I had to lock up the back wheel and slide for a few metres to avoid hitting a car which stopped suddendly. At no time during this did I feel in danger of falling.

So I figure the part of my brain which is responsible for balance has grown due to all the new demands placed upon it.

But that is not the proposed mechanism. It supposedly has to do with the fact that exercise increases the blood flow to the brain.

  9. The last I heard, quite some time ago it required 17 acres of land to account for all resources used by aus comsumers.

So if land was shared equally I am sure we would each get much less the 17 acres so theoretically we would have a much poorer lifestyle.

Im not sure if i interpreted that post right, but do u mean if every australian had even 1 acre of land weld end up poorer? if so thats weird, coz i dont even own 1 square meter of land. correct me if i misinterpreted.

Essentially I am saying that if every Australian owned 1 acre of land we would have a much poorer lifestyle if we tried to enforce sustainability worldwide

Because it takes 17 acres of land to generate the resources that we Australians are using up.

It was previously suggested that if the world land was divided equally up we would all be driving around in Rolls Royce. Well if all the land was didvided up we would each get

1/48th of square Km according to Wikipedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count...ulation_density

By my calculations 1 square Km = 250 acres

250/48 = 5.2 acres each so we would have to use about 1/3 of the resources we are using now to live sustainably.

This doesn't even take into account that much of this land would be non arable.

If only using arable land the figures would be

1/209 th square KM each of just under 2 acres.

Less then 1/8 of what we are using up now.

    Don't

t take my figures as gospel as I am quite sleep deprived at the moment.

  10. couldn't agree more, & think that ties in w/illegalbrain's last point

there is an argument that says if all the worlds resources were equally shared then we'd all be driving round in rolls royces, or whatever. Certainly we could bring everyones living standard to a reasonable level, but what kind ov level is sustainable?

The last I heard, quite some time ago it required 17 acres of land to account for all resources used by aus comsumers.

So if land was shared equally I am sure we would each get much less the 17 acres so theoretically we would have a much poorer lifestyle.

  11. because although we could easily get finance and buy a nice house, we don't want to get tied down and end up paying three times the value of the house.

by the time you have finished paying three times the value of the house. It should have appreciated around factor of six .

leaving you 3 times the value of the house better off.

Also don't pay three times the value of the house if you have a mortage you can pay off quickly.

  12. i think along with the mass scale horror and pain both GWB (and the rest of them) & hitler have both caused, i think what links them is that they are both twisted psychotic fuckwits who have somehow come to power.

I think we have clearly identified how they are the same.

The difference in my opinion is that I consider GWB to be a patsy. He has gone along with plans he didn't develop.

Don't know that much about Hitler but I imagine he had a very large part in the plans he put into action.

  13. yeah that's a fantastic idea!

*ponders the possibility of a budget home-made version* :scratchhead:

not sure what the proper version costs but last year I used soaker hoses in a similar fashion.

dug them into the ground and connected them up to tank for a hour or so when I thought the plants needed it.
