    How long can we survive?

I almost fell off my chair when I read this! I could site no end of facts/ literature disproving this statement, or resort to name calling, but I’ll just shake my head and wonder who you are working for! IMHO whats in the ground is far more safe than what comes out of the core of a reactor, to say that the radiation is intensified is probably closer to the truth I don’t like nuclear power, for many reasons & one reason is that it’s a continuity of the same mentality of leaving it for the future to deal with, that is why we have problems today. Natural nuclear reactors (this is a trip!): http://www.alamut.com/proj/98/nuclearGarde...elock_Oklo.html http://www.ocrwm.doe.gov/factsheets/doeymp0010.shtml There are some better sites about this out there but this was the best I could dig up. More relevant to this topic, being uninclined towards violence, like most of you I hope, how would one STOP the mass of unprepared, starved, violent and armed individuals who would come out of the city’s, from taking your land, food and resources from you? The logical solution would to be live in the middle of nowhere, but what other preventative actions are there?

    Handling poisonous species

IMHO There are not that many common organic naturally occurring toxins that can go through your skin. That’s why you have skin; more problematic is residue on your hands being transferred to your eyes or mouth, so wash your hands after handling anything that your not sure about, or just use gloves if you’re skin is compromised by a cut or rash. I have personally handled many toxic plants, fungi and animals with no ill effects.

    The end of the lightbulb

I’ve heard of this! I read a wile ago that NASA was well on the way to using a LED bank to grow plants in space, and near IR LED’s as a medical instrument to treat sprains or something similar. The advantages were the lowered heat, power consumption, longer life and flexibility of design. You can buy those 12V LED “globes” to fit into a conventional 12V lighting system, anyone know how well they work?

    Avian Flu & Tamiflu supply

Oh boy, I love this shit! Get stuck into it mateys…arrrggh!! Torsten & Oxydiser I wish I had your silver tongues, am I right in assuming this debate had been well rehearsed? Or are you two just gifted? It’s amusing to realise how common a human flaw it is to see that whole universe revolving around oneself! Or at least be selfish and un-empathetic towards all other life (and the earth as the centre of the universe…) “if the world survives and there no humans around to live in it - was there any point?” It’s similar to “if a tree fell in the forest…..” IMHO ultimately our current actions are leading to mass “suicide”, only the choice will be taken away, maybe not tomorrow but not that far off. I’m bet that many of the Romans and the Aztecs believed that their civilizations would last for ever as well… The earth is not going to “end”, but our currant civilization will fracture, humans as a species will probably be around for a long time to come, there is just going to be a major changes and a lot of suffering as for the lower and middle class, we won’t stand a hope in hell if humanity hits troubled waters, that includes me! Now don’t get me wrong I don’t want it to happen, but there is a domino effect waiting to occur, based on the petrochemical industry and our dependence on it for pharmaceuticals and sterile surgical technology for a start. (That why learning the “old ways”, using plants, is a smart move ) How can ppl really believe that humans are the most resistant living organisms on the planet? As in everything else dies before we do, we are soft without our technology. What about rats and cockroaches, as the most common stated examples surviving were humans can not? They will out last us all, think of a sapien species evolving from them, less wasteful I’ll bet (probably just eat it). The earth has a legacy of mass extinction starting with the blue-green algae (now called cyanobacteria) poisoning the planet with oxygen. Now that was a mass extinction! Almost everything before was swept away, except the remnants hiding in anoxic mud’s and deep sea vents. But it made way for multicellular live and ultimately us. Pick up a book James Lovelock, then one by Jared Diamond, they will teach anyone something about what we are doing on this “rock”, not involving sin, just consequences of actions or lack thereof! Oh and anybody still reading, I know someone who works in GSK making Relenza, what would U pay for a round of dose’s and a inhaler that fell off the back of a truck? (NO, I don’t have any so don’t get excited & PM me, I’m just curious)

    Avian Flu & Tamiflu supply

Ok IMHO I think that the holistic picture is being missed here. Now I think that the members of this forum are some of the most enlightened, educated & environmentally aware ppl I have ever come across but just look at the disagreements we are having, if we all can’t concur what luck will the rest have with what time is left? (personally I think that the ball is rolling and we can’t stop it ) If H5N1 bird flu is totally rendered benign by some wonder drug, there will just be ten more microscopic beasties just lining up to exploit all thous resources tied up in human biomass, helped along by population density, this is not a war that will end. Fast viruses that kill in a matter of weeks are not as much of a threat that I think we assume that they are (as in I won't care if I’m dead b/c I’m dead, but I would hate to suffer, what worries me is the slow acting varieties that can infect a population before the consequences are felt) If our current global society survives the plagues by some miracle, what’s next? War, for what little remains? Global warming stopping the gulf flow and the next ice age, or garden world? Why do ppl even what to bring more humans into this would to suffer, since the agreement seams to be that its only going to get worse? Are our genes really all that important? The way it seems to be heading, to make a differenced your ecological footprint will have to be NEGATIVE, not just for you, your partner & any kiddies you’re thinking about having, but the mass of ppl who aren’t doing a thing! So? Do what you can to respect the earth; not for her sake but so we may forgive ourselves of our sins.

hypocrite hippies and enviromentalists, You hit the nail on the head there mate, If I feel that my life would be pointless without more than one kid I plan to adopt. What’s a surprise it that on the other end of the scale the “environmentally unconcerned” commercially driven individuals that strive for power/possessions ect.. are having less kids, later in life, as they chase careers. What about China's one child policy ? A real proactive step IMHO, but it has coped some criticism from human rights, well what going to happen when humanity finally eats up all “free” resources and has to fight for what little is left ? I Sorry, for getting SO worked up, but I thought I was the only one with such unpopular views on “hypocrite hippies and environmentalists”. The amount of ppl I’ve pissed off with voicing that view.... so its refreshing to hear someone else stand up and say it!
