What sort of mycology stuff were you into?

I've been optimising substrates derived from various plant parts by removing particular components, sometimes adding them back in at different growth stages... the aim is to grow some of our more fastidious fungal friends. I would love to say more, but this is the internet and once its gone, it's gone forever. Exciting times though Edit: grammar

Yes by true colonisation I am referring to active production of carbohyrases and lignin peroxidases and active growth. What I suspect is happening is that the fungi are merely savaging free dissolved sugars and simple polysaccharides for exploratory growth, or still using the agar plug. My point is that is difficult to tell from a morphologically, whether the substrate is being metabolised or not... at least at this point in time.

For any bonsai enthusiasts here... I have been micro-propagating P. densiflora and P. thunbergii for a research project I am currently engaged in and have far more seedlings than I can use. All seedlings are clones from healthy trees cultivated by a well known and respected grower in the bonsai community (details on request). For the mycologically adventurous... these plants are the native hosts of Tricholoma matsutake, but will also support most mycorrhizal pine species. I can supply sterile TC flasks with 4-5 plantlets - $15 each + postage. (4 week lead time) Note these plants will need hardening-off.

Hey D00d. The white commercial variety is definitely a faster substrate colonizer than the pink or golden oysters, but the colored varieties are just as easy to fruit IMO.

Sorry Maxpower097! I totally missed your question. Oysters will go well in nearly any environment, so I would recommend starting with them.

Hi Mushfun, The Shiitake strain I am currently growing was isolated from a commercial fruiting body, which I believe to be cultivated in China. Grows relatively fast on agar. If you are after a particular strain, and a reasonable quantity of it, let me know and I will try to track it down. Cheers, Mimz

Best way to do it, unless you have a spare $3000 for an analytical scale, is to measure your powder in a larger quantity than what you want to use, then find a suitable solvent (i.e water, ethanol, food grade oil) to dissolve it in. That way you have a solution, and can measure out volumes that represent your dose. i.e if you wanted 15 mg, measure out a gram, dissolve it in 100ml of suitable edible solvent, so that each ml contains 10mg. Then use a small measuring cup to pour out 1.5ml.

All cuttings gone. Have 17 root balls with about 10-15cm of stem left. If anyone wants to pick them up, I'll take $20-30. Will sprout new shoots next spring.
