He was quite the looker wasn't he.
And nah, I'm not worried. The friend I gave it to was very appreciative and hopefully the pups grow back even nicer.
Great thread bro, I'm looking forward to see some other people's pics.

Certainly an interesting plant!
Here's mine that I also got from Prier. If my memory serves me correctly he was saying that it was originally imported from South America in the early 90's to a garden in northern New South Wales. These first three photos are from when I first got him about 12 months ago...
A few months later I cut him in half and gave the tip to a friend for their birthday. Counter-productive I know but I figured that he'd grow back. This is what he looks like now...
No flowers for me for a long time I'm afraid.

I don't think it would be absolutely necessary, but I do think it would increase germination rates. I haven't tried without heat to be honest. It helps to increase the humidity as well which is a good thing when they're so young. You'd probably be alright if you did them now because it's still quite warm but the heat would help them to keep growing throughout winter. Only way to find out is to experiment I suppose. Give it a crack man, there's always plenty more seeds. Best of luck!

Hey man,
I usually sow mine in winter and have had pretty good success. I use a little propergation chamber thing though that has bottom heat but I find it gives them a bit of a head start by the time spring rolls around. Last year I sowed some in early July and some more in September and the ones from July are at least 3 times bigger.
Good luck!

Camping trip would be awesome!
Although to be honest I probably won't have time until next summer. School's got me by the balls at the moment.
Plenty of time to organise it at least I suppose.

Thanks for the kind words guys, much appreciated!
Olive and Dood, I'm sure some of my friends and family consider things to already be out of hand. Could you imagine if I started grafting! I reckon they'd call for an intervention. They obviously don't understand the levels of cactus fever I possess. And that's what scares me about starting to graft plants. That just takes things to the next level and I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I've enough on my plate as it is. I'm a patient man, slow and steady wins the race. I'm sure one day though the itch will get strong enough.
Thanks for the offer of the pere Master B, but I have a bit growing and some pc too so when that day of itchiness comes I'll be well prepared. It's inevitable really.
They all do have names of some sort Smithy but putting them all on here falls squarely into the too hard basket. If there's anything you're curious about just ask. I'll always gladly talk about my babies.
No. 17 in the pach/peru post Dood is a huanucoensis courtesy of DiscoStu (thanks mate!) from sacred succulent seed I believe. Can't wait to see him when he's older, should be quite the looker! And you'd be spot on about the first three in last post Master B. Picked them up on a short cactus safari trip I made down to Vic late last year. Probably my three favourite plants. You're on the money with 39 as well. Got that one from Interbeing (legend bro!) as a scop x juuls. Should be another one to keep an eye on as he gets bigger.
And Etherealdrifter, the reward of being able to sit out in the serenity of my garden with a beer and a smoke are well worth any effort and patience in my opinion. I'm sure we will meet up one day mate and a great time will be had by all, it's written in the stars. And I very much look forward to it!
Cheers, have fun!

Thanks a lot guys, they're my pride and joy.
I got that plant as a woolunda monster pedro Wert. I loped the top off it recently to give to a friend as a birthday present. Funny that he's pupping from the base now, I would have thought he'd pup from the top.
And no, I didn't grow the arios from seed Swiper. I wish! Just ordered a few different types of ario seed so they'll be going down in my next sowing session.
Pach, Cordo, Peru and Cuzco all lumped together up next. Because I find it hard to distinguish between some of them...

And then there's the trichos, which I'll get to a bit later.
Enjoy!

Cheers Sagi,
It's not quite that big, only about 8cm across. I degrafted one a few months ago that was only a little smaller than this which seems to have been successful, time will tell I suppose. But I thought I'd leave this guy as a seed producer. Like I said in the first post, I was in two minds about whether to degraft this one. I was mainly worried about the stock failing. But I think I'll leave it now, maybe bury the stock in course sand if I want the own roots look. I'll see how the other one I degrafted goes and rethink the situation next season if all is well. Nice plants by the way! I really love the look of that one on the pachanoi!
Shit coolname, that must have been devastating. Especially being your first loph graft! And so quickly as well! Most degrafts I've had die have sat there for well over a year with no roots before turning black. Was it not well calloused?
And wert, hmmmm. That idea's so crazy it might just work! I've a picture in my mind involving a terscheckii and the biggest loph the world has ever seen! Pure fantasy realm stuff.

Ahhhh, words of wisdom.
Thanks for clarifying mate, seems so obvious when you put it like that.
I think I'll just leave him be for now. Like you said, if it ain't broke, why fix it?
Cheers.

Thanks for the advice mate,
I always assumed that you should leave a scion to get as big as possible before degrafting, the theory being that the bigger the scion the more energy it would have available to push out some new roots.
I've had a better success rate rooting loph degrafts above 5cm diameter than below. My method being to have a standard loph mix covered with a 2cm layer of course sand, keeping the base of the plant relatively dry and causing it to send out roots searching for the damper soil below. But what you say about the water storage makes a lot of sense.
What do you think about cutting the stock, say an inch below the scion, and rooting that? The stock has seen better days, I don't think it's got much life left in it and I feel that burying that much stock is just asking for rot. Or if using crushed rock, when the stock finally does give up the scion will have quite a tough time trying to send out roots to find the soil, as opposed to an inch or so. I don't have that much experience though so I'm not real sure.
Hmmm, decisions decisions...

Hey guys,
Just after some people's opinion here.
I'm in two minds about whether I should degraft this loph?..
I figure if I'm going to do it this season I should do it nowish.
I much prefer the own roots look and the stock is looking a bit thirsty and crusty.
The scion doesn't seem to be growing much but it does look healthy and has been putting out a lot of flowers.
So what do you think? Degraft it or let it go for another season?
Cheers!

Makes for stunning looking plants.

A couple were tagged to take cuts of but I don't think they were taking any whole plants like some of the others.
Looking for taquimbalensis/tacaquirensis or chilensis
in Wanted
Posted
Hello fellow cactus fiends. I have just come into a little spare money (i.e. cacti funds) and am looking to purchase some trichos. I would really like a nice tacaquiriensis/taquimbalensis as that is one thing my collection is severely lacking at the moment. Or even a nice chilensis would be cool. I also have a couple of little fairly rare pups I could throw in to sweeten the deal. If anyone can help me out, let me know. Cheers.
