  1. Yep, I certainly got my cacti wood on!

i'm kind of addicted to spying on peoples front yards while i walk the pooch... usually commending or disapproving of the space that people create. There's a really annoying trend where i live of all the new houses and their 'drought resistant' gardens. Basically this means, loads of Yuccas and Agaves (these are the only two species allowed it seems) amongst white pebbles... C'mon people, of all the possible things you could be growing in that space!! /rant

PS. I have nothing against the aforementioned species, in fact, i grow them too, but variety is the spice of life, and why would you want your garden to look exactly like 539 other houses in the neighbourhood!

  2. RE: Etiolation...

Disclaimer: I'm relatively recent in the cacti game - only a year under my belt.

Just so i'm clear, cacti will etiolate when they do not get enough sunlight? They are 'craving' more of it so are stretching upwards to see what they can get ??? Does temperature play a role at all? Soil moisture? Many questions hath I.

I have a few pachanoi which have decided to etiolate this season (some more than others) yet I have them in the sunniest part of the garden. Whereas, others are growing perfectly columnar. I'm a little confused.

  3. First time sower!!! Excited much???? :-)

I spent all day going over as much info as i could re: soil mixtures and tricks, and now i have sowed:

    T. Pachanoi ~ 50-70 seeds

    T. Rosei ~ 15-20 seeds

    L. Williamsii ~ 100 seeds

    B. Caapi - 20 seeds

almost all seeds from SAB'ers except for a bunch of Pachanoi.

    Soil mix mainly used:

    1/3 perlite,

    1/3 propagation sand

    1/3 seed raising mixture

Except for B. caapi, where i substituted the seed raising mixture for peat moss.

All sieved using a sieve bought from bunnings. There really are a lot of large chunks (even in the propagation sand) which i didn't want in the mix.

All steralized at 180degC for 25 minutes.

I am currently soaking Acacia Floribunda seeds so and intend to plant them tonight..

I sincerely hope to see some results. But hey, that was heaps of fun ... can see myself becoming addicted to the whole germination side of things!

    much love SAB'ers

  4. The first pic look like a Trichocereus Scopulicolis, but with some varying growth patterns...

The second, some form of Cereus ? Judging by the protruding ribs...

Is the top a Bunnings purchase? I got one just like it recently.

I'm no cacti expert though, and someone who is will probably chime in soon and correct me.

  5. Actually, I found that extremely interesting and informative, and not the slightest bit boring.

Technical feedback - one thing i noticed is that in 4.2 you mentioned that no other water was given during the experiment, but then during 4.3 "sowing" you mention that

"Each pot was then misted" ... isn't that a contradiction of your above statement?

    Fantastic stuff all round.

  6. Awesome shots...

With the gymnos - has anyone else noticed that they change colour when given full sun exposure? Mine have tended towards the more yellow colour than the ones without full sun.

Will post some pics of my gymnos tomorrow to show you what i mean
