Just recently got back from a research expedition to New Caledonia and Vanuatu. What can I say the place is paradise. Its covered in beautiful simplex trees. The beaches are lined with them. Unfortunately they wouldn't let us travel with the shellite and NaOH so we couldn't sample the goodness within. The results were positive from a burn and smell test though. The trees are big compared to most acacias. They have a thick trunk and grow to at least 12m. Unfortunately we didn't get any pics of the entire tree. Here are some pics of phylodes and seed pods. Here's one for you mycophiles, unidentified fungi growing on a simplex trunk. Another unidentified acacia common on the islands.

I have to say IMHO killing anything you are not going to eat is pretty lame and fucked. Moreton Island is about as safe/unsafe shark wise as Amity Pt. Especially Bulwer and Cape Moreton. Some Australian record tiger sharks have been caught there. After all there used to be a whaling station there. A good easily accessible place that is relatively safe is off Shelly Beach at Caloundra. Off Noosa NP and Pt Cartwright at Mooloolaba are great too. In calmer weather Coolum headland can be good too.

When I heard it on the news I got my hopes up. Nothing would be better than to hear about John Howard being incinerated in a huge fireball.

I used to be mad keen into spearfishing. Have two rubber band guns, one pneumatic gun and two hand spears. It requires a lot of dedication and skill if you are going to catch anything. For starters smokers need not apply, as unless you can hold your breath for well over a minute you are unlikely to catch anything. I could let you in on a few great spots around SE QLD. The best is probably Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island. There is a nice slice of reef there with some beautiful fish and corals. Used to be in a spearfishing club in highschool and nearly always caught some spectacular fish. Some big enough to make you bare foot waterski. The only down side of Amity is sharks there are lots of them. Nearly everytime you get a fish within 20 seconds a few wobeggong sharks will come in to have a look and try to steal it from you. There are also plenty of bull sharks there but thankfully never encountered them, although a silly mormon girl got eaten by bull sharks there last year. The craziest but most productive thing is to spearfish at night. You can basically only see 2 meters in front of you and all around is pitch black. Huge adrenalin rush everytime you see a shadow. Lobsters and octopus are easy to catch at night.

If I told you I liked mushrooms, would you think I was a fun guy?

It was a pretty good day. The shark was great sport on light line. It went like a freight train. I got it up to the kayak a few times and like Ramon said, in hindsight I'm glad it broke free too. It would have been pretty dangerous to have handled it on a kayak 1.5km offshore. Great fish Teo. Would love to catch barra some day.

It has been proven that 30% water makes it more effective. I think it helps it get absorbed through the cell walls/membranes of spores/bacteria etc.

Not drug related but my closest call was going through a radar trap at 240km/h at 3am on airport drive. Another close call was when a friend and I were walking to a party in the neighbourhood. It was late we were fairly intoxicated and it was hot so we decided to try to hail a cab. We ended up hailing a police car. One of the cops said "Can we help you boys?" Thankfully they didn't notice my pockets bulging with what would have been in excess of 70 dry grams of mushrooms.

Macaws are legal to keep as pets just horrendously expensive to buy. I don't know what they cost now but used to be around $8000 a bird for some varieties.
