This beautiful micrograph shows crystals of dopamine - the chemical released when we do naturally rewarding things like eating and procreating. Dopamine also affects brain processes involved in controlling movement, mood and memory.

Spike Walker, last night's winner of the Royal Photographic Society's Combined Royal Colleges Medal, produced this image by passing polarised light through dopamine crystals. How the crystals refract the light varies depending on their orientation within the sample, causing them to reflect light at different wavelengths. Using this technique highlights more detail in the crystal structure than regular observation through a microscope.

  2. I have been busting to see this become a reality and wonder why it has taken so long...If I had money thats what I would be investing in...what a brilliant idea...

And Fungal...I do pray that is not your child in your avatar... the childs parents should have been thrashed to within inches of their lives...that sickens me when I see children abused like that..

    It's a picture of me as a li'l tacker :P

  4. Dunno if this has been posted before, to lazy to utfse, but another brilliant idea by our beloved mycophillic genius:

Life Box: Paul Stamets Unveils Brilliant Seed-Sprouting Cardboard Box

    by Thomas Ermacora, 07/02/10

Just think – what if all the cardboard boxes that you receive when you buy online from Amazon or Apple had seeds in them and you could simply put them in your nearest plot of soil and grow some baby trees? Well that is just what the incredible mycologist and mycomimicry advocate Paul Stamets has done by releasing the Life Box™. It can be made to virtually any dimension, does not increase the cost of shipping, and the tree seed mix has been approved by the Department of Agriculture for planting in every state in the continental United States (not Hawaii), and Canada. It’s so smart that Al Gore, who is always ahead of the curve, decided to ship his new book ‘Our Choice‘ in them!

It’s so smart that Al Gore, who is always ahead of the curve, decided to ship his new book ‘Our Choice‘ in them!

If you do the math it is quite impressive what one could achieve with this clever box: a 1-2% share of the cardboard box market in the United States could cover up to 25,000 acres of land per week! Of the hundreds of tree seeds in each box, if only one survives for 30 years, approximately one ton of carbon will be sequestered. Therefore, the potential for coverage by trees coming from Life Boxes™ expands from 25,000 acres to 25,000,000 acres per week.

Paul Stamets says “the Life Box™ is a form of social as well as ecological currency and a shovel ready do-it-yourself climate change solution“. Planting trees also provides more shade for buildings to reduce the use of air-conditioning, helps the soil hold more moisture, preserves aquifers and even prevents flooding in cities as Andy Lipkis has demonstrated in LA. The Life Box™ is manufactured in the United States using recycled cardboard and soy-based inks. So what are you waiting for? Go plant one today!

  5. Just a friendly warning on stockpiling dried mushrooms, many of you may know this already, but it can have quite dire legal consequences. This guy from bluelight got dicked with about an ounce of dried mushrooms and the coppers tried to pin him with 27 grams of psilocin, apparently 2g is classified as supply. The magistrate saw through their bullshit, luckily for him, and he walked on a 22 month suspended sentence. This sort of heavy handedness was news to me, so if anyone else isn't aware of what the fuzz are capable of trying to get away with just bear it in mind when picking and stockpiling

  6. So I just asked and I have never consumed alcohol during a psych experience. It doesn't feel right, and I doubt it would be effective to ease down a trip gone wrong anyway....

Shooting speed is worse. The subs reeealy don't like that, but once its done they no longer have a say in the matter

For he recored, I have't shot speed in years, juts that ime a few drinks are fine, the subs even enjoy the camaraderie if you confront them and tell them wtf it is you want from them (quite amenable chaps, if you just talk back). But yeah, don't shoot speed on subs. If nothing else they warp your vision as you do it and make it fucking hard to find a vein

yeah, fucking hardcore to the max (one upon at iem anyeway)

  7. Thank you for your overwhelmingly enlightening thoughts, and extremely intelligent profiling Fungal YA LIMP KNOB...finger2.gif

LOL, he sees right through me!

Don't mind me, I am a knob. but I mean it in an irreverent way. I have had many sub experiences from the light joyous to the OMG the carpet is swallowing and I'm dead and am the cosmic being at the end of time remembering my own evolution in reverse. Shit, that's how I befriended PD, many, many years ago!

Just don't take my bullshit too seriously, knobliness is my natural state of being, please forgive my foibles

Peace and hatred to you all!

PS: Subs LOVE good graf and good hip hop. Kick back with somne rhymes, close your eyes and experience the love and mad graf. Nothing beter imo. Truly that culture has a deep psychedelic undercurrent that the myco-gnosis truly appreciates.

You northrn monkeys are just pussies, and cubes are for lamers, subs are the BUSINESS! YEEEEAAH!

  8. Sometimes smaller doses and giving in completely will give better results than eating a truckload and expecting grand things to happen.

Spoken like a true Victorian, not like the cube munching interstate fags. And its is coming from a man who lived for excess in every other aspect of his life, believe me, I know whate he is like IRL. Subs teach you control and the principle that less is more.

Subs are the fucking shit, and unless your paralysed from the neck down you have no business sooking because yu having a dark and brooding trip, man the fck up and grow a set, then learn to let go and have good time, subs can be awesome fun if you do it right. I suspect the OP is doing it wrong.

  9. The OP is an eejit and probably just took too many. Subs are strong, no doubt, but I have had as many enlightening, fun, lighthearted, illuminating, life changing sub trips (more even) than I have the dark, brooding, head fuck trips. Its all about does and how you engage with the mushroom. I've laways found if you say 'ffs enough is enough, with ll dues respect, I know I have this waaaaaang reality to face at some point, but right now, right now I'd like to just fucking chillax, maybe listen to some music and see visions of the sickest graffiti art nevr yet produced/ IME they are quite amenable chilling fuck out as you need, as long as you are prepared to interact with them, and and on your feet, and not act like some helpless little bitch, but like a man and a warrior who isn't prepared to take their shit lying down. That being said, try that on a big dose and your going to be in for a rude awakening. The key is dosage and interaction, they will listen if you talk back. Just don't inject speed, they really fucking HATE that.

  10. FOR fucks sake! Every1 go and edit their posts before I do! I will not accept insults, verbal abuse or otherwise. If we still had a warn point system. A few of u would have just earned one. Delete or edit ur posts or I will.

    Peace

    N

Oooh, will have to read whole thread! Love the drama! popcorn.gif

  11. Mmm, am feeling decidedly strange after inhaling the fumes after cooking them, hope I haven't inadvertently ingesgted some airborne toxin lol

Probably just the litre + of wine I've drank tonight though

  12. Once i picked some yellow-stainers that didn't really have much yellow happening on them , as soon as they hit the fry-pan though that iodiney-dettol smell was overwelming and they got turfed..

    Might do an experiment.

damn, this thread is making me hungry!

    :EDIT:

Yeah, didn't notice any extra smell after cooking nthem, but the smell beforehand, while not dettol, definitely wasn't right. And the yelloe reaction became much more pronounced once exposed to heat. Turf them it is!

  13. Actually, I cut a couple lengthways and on the inside there is a distinct orangey-yellow colour at the base of the stem. I'm starting to become confident that they aren't campestris, will probably throw them away.

  14. If it looks like Agaricus campestris but stains yellow, then it's probably Agaricus xanthodermis. AFAIK, it's not poisonous to everyone, and even then only causes an upset stomach. But it has a strong medicinal odour that is offputting to most people. It smells like detol.

Doesn't stain bright yellow. More of a bronze tinge in places, might not even be bruising. Certainly no odour other than an earthy fungal odour that you get from field mushrooms. So far the spores are looking black but not many have dropped yet. I'll have to get my card reader working so I can post a pic.

  15. A good pic & spore print im sure someone would know

im sure i know of the yellow stainer you mean, starts off with white / pinkish white gills not attached to stem, has a thick visible veil ring ? they then turn dark & have a dark print (include good pic, size & good description someone will id it)

Plenty of shaggys here in the local park funnily enough usually under 1 gum tree in grass on hard compacted ground

That's bang on what I'm talking about. Forgot about prints, will go and put them over paper now. Can't post a pic atm cos the driver for my SD card reader doesn't work, will have to sort it tomorrow but by then the spore prints will be ready. Thanks.

Are shaggys the ink caps? i had no idea that they're edible. Ae they nice? They don't look nice, lol.

  16. The easiest to recognise would probably be Saffron Milkcaps (Lactarius deliciosus). I had a feed of them (with olive oil, garlic, parsley and cream) on crusty bread for brekky. Orgasmic.

FYI, I just collated the following lists from 'Mushroom' by Johnny Acton & Nick Sandler. This is a book from the UK, so some may not apply, however I can confirm the agaricus, lactarius and also (not included) is of course Suillus granulatus (ringless Slippery Jack). Got a box of Slipperies in the fridge and am yet to try them. I can also confirm the death cap in Oz - I've come across quite a few of these this year (first season to id them).

    Edibles of Autumn:

    - Agaricus campestris (field mushroom)

    - Amanita caesarea (Caesar's mushroom)

    - Armillaria mellea (honey fungus)

    - Boletus edulis (cep, porchini, penny bun)

    - Cantharellus cibarius (chanterelle)

    - Coprinus comatus (shaggy ink cap)

    - Craterellus comucopioides (horn of plenty)

    - Hydnum repandum (hedgehog fungus)

    - Lactarius deliciosus (saffies)

    - Lepista nuda (wood blewit)

    - Macrolepiota procera (parasol mushroom)

    - Sparassis crispa (cauliflower fungus)

    DEADLY Poisonous mushrooms of Autumn:

    - Amanita phalloides (death cap)

    - Amanita virosa (destroying angel)

12 to 2, the odds are in my favour :D

I found a flush of what I'm pretty sure are field mushrooms on my nature strip, though a couple had a faint yellow tinge on the stems that made me cautious. If I post photo's here do you reckon you could give me a yae or nae?

  17. So wat's good eating in Melbourne? I'm really keen to do some earthy wild mushroom risottos over the next few weeks. I've been told slippery jacks are good, what else should one look out for this time of year, other than common field mushrooms? (photos appreciated)
