Best tasting edibles?

Hey i was wondering whqat people thought was the best tasting edible they have tried? I was lucky enough to find shaggymanes for sale at a local grocer - and believe me these guys taste awesome! Im gonna start growing them from now on.

Ive also read that in america Hypholoma capnoides is reknowned as being as tasty as some of theeuropean wild mushrooms.

what do poeple think?

Found around Aus. or any edible?

I've got limited experience but it goes to Pleurotus eryngii (hmm suprised?) :wink: Beautiful with smoked chilli.

Not too far off the first crop for the season here.

Am not a big fan anymore of some of the oysters i've tried, ostreatus and djamor. Ostreatus was nice for a while but then I was constantly becoming really crook from them, about bed time every night after a meal I'd be throwing up and in a fair bit of pain, felt terrible. This happened too often so I dropped them as a culture around here. Now it's probably more psychological in that even thinking of the effects makes me quiver, kind of like the effects from the smell of bourbon :puke::wink:

Enoki in soups has a nice texture, but i've not tasted it by itself.

Wouldn't mind growing some Coprinus, Lentinula and some thick agarics like Agaricus blazei in the future years.

hmmm young shaggys make a pretty damn good brekky on toast but at the moment im hangin out for some grilled lepista nuda and lactarius deliciouss, mmm.. both hav nice fruity aroma and hold texture well .. hard question though theres so many different flavours out there...

i could say stuff like rare mycorrizals but really part of the satisfaction comes with tatsing great, being free (GYO) and being easy to grow

so my favs are

Elm oyster (Hypzizygus ulmarius)

Shiitake

king oyster

baby button mushrooms pan fried with butter parley and chives

i also quite like the agrocybe aegerita

and im keen to try wood blewitts

My fav' is shitake, bbq'd lightly or hot pot. its rich tasty and good for u! i like enoki in hot pot too but it has mild taste.

Yeah i was overlooking the shiitake - always nice - i eat them quite often ut couldnt fruit them for the life of me.

Ive never had a chance to try a wood blewit. Hey fezza did u end up getting crook from the milky caps? I remember you mentioned something along those lines.

Ive found a grocer in my new area where i live that has odd mushrooms now and then - aparently specialise in Slippery Jacks in the right time of year.

As for Agrocybe aegerita - it was a damn easy fruiter as well - but the ones i grew i didnt harvest at the right time.

Im keen to grow out shaggymanes and capnoides - ive called in a few old favours on the capnoides - dude is sending me a few wild prints.

If anyone can help me with the blewits or shaggymanes let me know and ill return in kind.

Id be een to get another aegerita culture as well - i had a few but i think i gave them away.

The best edible imo is Lactarius Deliciosus, although the Morchella sp. comes in a close second. I am fortunate enough to have acsess to an enourmous quantity of morels when in season.

On the last pick of the season, well, the last time myself and fellow gatherer picked. We got just over 2.3kg dried. We still have a few left, and i hope to make these last until next spring(that wont happen). I have been asked for directions to this spot, which is on public land, many many times. Its hard to give directions with a mouthfull of mushrooms.

Yeah there is plenty, I guess once someone finds them they keep it to themselves.

I have only had 3 edibles I found in the wild. The best tasting is probably Coprinus comatus (shaggy mane / lawyers wig)

any bolete sp will work for me, also chanterelles(soup), slippery jacks(in heavy cream souce)and of course - lactarius(milk cap)fried slowly in butter with heaps of freshly ground pepper(I usually chuck in an egg at the end)...

interesting thing - everybody seems to like coprinus comatus...have to give it a try. should be easy to grow? any tips? I'm not too good with compost etc...

no problem. it like badly made compost. its a species that isnt bothered by ammonia as much

i would suggest

1. get a fresh fruiting culture ( i dont have)

2. grain spawn - millet (easy- a very aggressive species)

3.paper spawn - easy it loves paper

4. make a compost heap out back

straw, lawn clippings, fresh horse shit, veggie scraps etc

get it hot

turn

hot

turn

once its black moist n the ammonia is fading mix through the spawn

leave a heap or even use to spread about the veggie patch

case with thin layer of peastraw

its jaut what id do if i had a good culture right now based on what ive seen it do

Well i had never tried the shaggys and come across them quite often before but left them behind. Whe i saw them the other day at the shop (which is the first time ive ever seen them for sale anywhere) i thought id give them a try. Lets just say that im aiming to find a culture or a patch this season.

As for Beechworth - im actually originally from up that way so i do get around those parts from time to time.

Anyone tried picled boletes(you can find them in russian delis)? pricey but great! also, they sell these other mushies(look like russula species) picled in a big jar. haven't tried those yet...

all I can tell you is that Poles are absolutelly in love with the Cep(Boletus edulis) and it's 'lesser' cousins(Slippery Jacks etc), as well as with Lactarius deliciosus and Chanterelle(all of which feature in their literature prominently by the way...). During the mushroom season they get up at 4AM, to get to the best sites in order to beat the competition. If you could kindly tell me how to post pictures, I'll send you some of my mushrooms photos I took during the mushy season in Europe...

Competition is stiff among middle-aged eastern europeans in the park near my old house too - and that was just for agaricus. mushroom rage...

Yes, it's definitely a very competitive activity, and rage is not unusual...It's sort of hard to explain, it's in their blood. Mushroom hunting is a huge part of an annual callendar, and no respectfull household should be without at least a handfull of dried Cep ready to be used for Xmas Eve soup...Anyway, I hope this works(pictures).
