bugs in shrooms

Recommended Posts

Guest Daytripper

Hey all,i think it`s nearly shroom time again in vic in about 3 weeks I THINK,I HOPE(please correct me if i`m wrong) and i need to know what to do about the small insects under the cap.I would`nt worry about it but if i boiled them for a sec to kill em off, is`nt heat not good cause it destroys the psylicibin in the shrooms?

Any way I NEED TO GET RID OF THESE INSECTS,CAUSE IT SOUNDS GROSS TO EAT THEM WHILE THERE STILL MOVING!!!

Plus can any body drop a hint to where a magic mushroom pick site might be around the bendigo area?thanks.

i'd leave the ones with bugs alone, cause their usually old and starting to break down.

only go for fresh ones,if possible.

but if its all you can get, just shake the little blighters off onto some white paper, brushing off the sheet and repeating until no more shake out ... then mull those dodgy looking caps into a mug of hot water ...

i understand its an oxygen reaction that degrades the potency, more so than the short exposure to heat

go for the fresher looking caps, leave the older ones there to do their thing. whack 'em into a dehydrator if you have plenty, it's going to be a long winter.

The worms and bugs are bastards! Fan dry them if they show signs of nasties and then use dessicant - the bug and worms die really quickly.

Or just leave the old ones

i recommend sealing and freezing after drying to a crisp for all wild shrooms.

I once met an orthodox Jew who was delighted to find that you could cultivate Psilocybe because when they contain grubs they are not kosher.

Will freezing kill the eggs or just put them in a state of suspension?

My problem with mushrooms is the maggot eggs hatching AFTER I've picked the fresh healthy mushrooms. It occurs during the drying process, which takes most of a week.

Seeing once firm stalks turn to slosh and start wiggling is pretty disgusting. Would be good to know once the drying starts I won't have any problems like that.

nah, you're just being paranoid wink.gif

I'd love to hear of someone collecting and eating enough bugs to get high.

Have you seen the picture of my pet slug?
