I've been reading about doing hydro with cacti. I'm thinking about doing that with my hoodia. If it worked, it would speed up the growth process a lot. In the ABC hoodia special it was made clear that "lipodrene", the stuff I researched a few months ago (look further up in this thread) contains no hoodia and nothing else but caffeine, probably not even the ephedra and yohimbe they claim to contain. These pills here are a new generation and could well be the real thing... However, after the "lipodrene" swindel, we'll have to be careful... I'm playing with the idea of buying some... Rev Posted August 31, 2003 I know that its easy to sympathise with the San for losing out on the Hoodia but any patent on the use of Hoodia for weight loss is fair game unfortunately as thats not the application they used it for. Its all debatable but either way intellectual property rights native or corporate dont extend to the plant itself - whoever has the plant in their hand owns the plant - the patent covers the usage of that plant for specific purposes. Eating something to reduce your hunger when youve got no food isnt automatically the same application as eating it to reduce cravings when youve got plenty to eat. While i agree we shouldnt be buying up wildcrafted supplies of such a slowgrowing plant from unprotected wild stands or buying wild collected plants i think that the seed is fair game and with the publicity its just gotten i suspect that it wont be long before its extinct in the wild Slimming plant in Poor country wanted by Fat people in rich country equals quick extinction. Putting these plants into the hands of people who will care for them will make sure it doesn't go extinct. I had heard that the indiginous people did use hoodia for overweight children to slim them down. I also heard that other species of hoodia besides gordonii have the same effect. Rather than waiting for the super-concerns like Pfizer to get earn , what?, 80-90 per cent of the net profit, I'd love to cut those bastards (Pfizer)out. The San looked in pretty bad condition and really need their schools and hospitals but... as do most other people over there.... I have an idea: Get rid of John Howard and his stinking liberal party, change all the policies, i.e. cut 90% of the defence budget and give it to poor nations like the the san etc... We'd be saving heaps of food with this cactus, so why not give the food to the poor countries? Hmmm...there'd be plenty of other budgets to cut, i.e. cut the budget for the rich schools and give it to the poor schools etc. Don't get me dreaming.... Very little of this money actually makes it through to the poor people, while a few at the top are wallowing in it. And the money that does make it through is indirectly used to buy alcohol and drugs (eg in the mission in taree, the buildings get stripped on a regular basis to sell the materials for cash. The cars get written off by drunk driving. The houses get trashed cos they didn't cost THEM anything. etc) Money is not the answer unless it is combined with a strong traditional cultural sense of community, combined with education. Circumcision is Mutilation! I told all people who advised that I have my boys circumcised to go fuck themselves! it's not only that conservative people don't want to tell their children how to wash themselves (very simple process) they also have hidden sadistic ambitions and want to make their children suffer. planthelper Posted November 25, 2003 i have been informed: hoodias grown in oztralia have been flowering and setting seeds. but, i don't know what time of the year that happend, maybe hoodias flower at will, without any respect of the photoperiode..., all i know is, it's possible to "grow your own hoodia seeds" hmm, i thought i put this up again 4 member felix. one more thing @ed: give your hoodia gordonii seedlings more water... i can c on your pic: the embryonic leaves have turned yellow and shrivelled (water/nutrient deficency). mine did the same, but much later according to the hoodias time frame. i wish, i could post my hoodia seedling's pic, but my pc is not up to it... I would have to respectfully disagree with your assessment that the photo shows they are underwatered. They look fat and happy. An underwatered hoodia seedling will be thin, a well watered one will be fat. They are dry dessert plants so don't water them too often. They hate wet roots.
