Spherical contamination or spore germination

Hey all!

These terrible images were taken at about 40x magnification on some plates inoculated with 5 year old spores (three years older than the spores in my last post so I have little hope these spores are viable)

They were fluffy and white like cotton balls but rose up out of the plate. I assume this is contamination but wanted to make sure.

I have been out of the game for a while but I thought mushroom myc would grow in 2 dimension not three.

Do you flame your inoculation tool between each transfer?

its a bit hard to tell in pics. but i think its bread mold. i wouldn't throw them out yet though and give them a bit more time to be sure

Ill leave it if I see it again! I had to open them for the microscope shots.

To follow up- subsequent plates have shown similar/ the same growth formation.

I think its unlikely to be contamination unless the spores were heavily contaminated with one mould species.

It could be a FAE issue, this is my first time using glass dishes and they seem to have a pretty good seal.
