I'd wager that 99.5% of woodworkers aren't lovely people and that would just be more about how you entered that culture, formed bonds and moved closer to the people you liked and away from those you didn't over time.

I'm not into woodworking but if tomorrow i just went on facebook or similar and started trying to engage with woodworkers or trying to buy/sell handmade chairs i would probably encounter a roughly similar jerk to non jerk ratio as i would in society in general, if i started at the organic start of that journey long ago i would now be surrounded by mostly non jerk wood workers or those that share my more specific interests(chairs or tables/power tools or hand tools, i dunno woodworking).

Some people are just jerks, they exist in all groups,hobbies and cultures, over time you hopefully weed them out.

You'd lose in my world coz 100% of woodworkers I've met are lovely people. Even my woodworking teachers at school were loved by everyone. They were so chill, surfed, probably stoners but we couldn't get that out of them. It's about how people are approaching the hobby. If they come into it coz of money, and stay coz of money, then they don't really do it for fun, then they aren't getting in the zone, or zoning out. It's legit a trance you can get in when doing woodwork or working with plants. It's the same with every profession really. Either they have love for it or not. Those who can find love for things are more grounded than those chasing money or clout. Those at the top of every profession take pride in their work, and usually do it for fun too. I'm talking about top of top too, the ones that get creative with their work, not just those who can repeat a task and numb themselves to be able to do it.

Woodworking is actually a good example coz it's been around a long time and not some hype thing. Not a shortcut to get high either. So chances of good people there are high. Blacksmithing would be similar. Bonsai similar too. Drug plants adds new aspect to it, coz it's another reason people flock to it. Although I find the defining factor being whether someone is actually interested in the hobby vs doing it for cash. Even if it's to get high, you still have to put effort in, so there needs to be some interest. Plenty of people want drugs but they don't wanna put the effort in for it. Anyone I've met that puts effort in, vs hand over money, is a decent person.

The 'plant medicine' community (if you can call it that) is a microcosm of society, albeit a biased sample. You're going to get a mix of ego- and purpose-driven motivations behind people's engagement with it and common interests... Same with anything.

 

That said I don't think it's fair to say aggressive and greedy behaviour is a part of the culture. Definitely not moreso than society in general. In my experience the opposite is true overall.

Bruz I was banned from facebook groups for calling out dodgy trades. Torsten covered for him, as did Willfer or whatever his name is that runs ario, loph group,.. plus Fahim and his mate. Just have Fahim block me for the second time actually coz he was suppose to send me seeds from Huan Shuma, I asked for tracking coz it was hundreds worth of seeds that were owed and he just wouldn't post with tracking. Then did his best to drum up drama and when he couldn't find anything to blame me for he blocked me.

These people run their groups like a stock market news outlet and do not allow any bad reputation for people who they're friends with.
I took screenshots of all of it coz it happens so often. I've never met so many dodgy people, and I think this is because there's no checks and balances. Those at the top ban anyone for speaking out, which is why the scene is filled with dipshits.

Do you want a list of all the deadshits I've dealt with or who have blocked me? They aren't all small players, many run groups. I've sold thousands worth or seeds and plants without issue. I get on facebook and drama drama drama. Gimme gimme gimme. Mine mine mine.

Oh and I wasn't the only one with issues. I have at least a dozen people private message me backing me up for calling people out. Torsten doesn't have a good rep and he was covering for the guy who ripped me off 1k in cactus, a mate 500, another dude 600 or more, plus others. That's how I got banned from all the groups. Amazing hey......must be all my fault......but it's not, hence my screenshots for EVERYTHING. I don't even care to look at any of it. Knowing how dodgy the scene is, is enough for me. I trade with others who can also see it.

I'd still join the facebook groups if allowed, but I would be banned fast coz if I see something I will comment. Others who messaged me don't even like my comment officially lol coz they don't wanna get banned, but they message me to say they agree and it's fucked up.

Soooooooo problem is no open conversation. Same same society at large and all issues really. The only narrative and talking points people are allowed to hear is what those at the top give permission for. Dystopia..

I never really used the facebook pages for long so I can't comment from experience. FB in general seemed to be a net negative and I stopped using it a while back

Sorta....coz it's good these people reveal themselves, and best they do it early on in the "relationship".  I'm banned from loads of facebook groups coz they exist in a bubble. Blocked from plenty of insta accounts too. If you speak honestly the ego trippers don't like it and can't handle reality, so have to block it out. It actually makes my life easier and streamlines my experience. I just wish I had a list of who has blocked me haha. Notably I'm banned from most ADHD pages and dog groups that come up with dystopian things like "littermate syndrome", coz apparently siblings aren't meant to grow up together and ADHD people can use that as an excuse for EVERYTHING and not ever take responsibility.

Problem with the whole world is there's no open conversation. If the drones don't want discourse then I just side step them, and they are making that super easy with their ignorance/arrogance, yet their ego tells them they're winning. I love it.
