Translating cacti

I have a bunch of cacti about 6 inches in pots, i have neglected these guys well and proper.

I want to move them into bigger pots but after doing a couple bare hand and struggling to not prick myself like crazy or just crumble the root soil and then put on a rose glove and did another couple but then struggled not to damage the lower spines.

any tips/suggestions or good methods to do this?

A magazine or newspaper wrapped around the cactus like a jacket helps and held in place with masking tape when transplanting - spine damage happens but they do grow back eventually.

This works, i found scrunching the sheets of paper up first instead of just wrapping it like a sheet prevents any spine damage and isn't much harder to handle.

I have also found that an old thick towel folded as few times makes an excellent barrier. The other one is cardboard cut into strips also creates a nice safety barrier.
