Digital Identity Bill?

Recommended Posts

Thought some peeps might want the chance to provide their feedback on proposed legislation regarding digital identity, or the 'Trusted Digital Identity Bill'...

Some form of digital ID/passport is inevitable IMO, I remember many years ago proposing and discussing such a thing at uni and how it could/would work, my guess is that the aus or any gov that tries to set them up will fail slowly and never really be adopted as commonplace as they will try use it for the own purposes and just do it poorly, and eventually a company like google or apple will set up a global equivalent that will just somehow be adopted and accepted as a standard.

Basically just a "log in with google?" but where you and your log in has been certified as an actual unique person and this just expands to take the place of all similar things as it becomes more and more accepted.

I tried to have a look at what's it about but am confused by what's the problem? I already have the Medicare and Centrelink apps on my phone, I've had to provide copies of my driver's licence/passport/birth certificate for all sorts of things from applications to study or police clearances (I think?) etc etc. I don't use that thing where you share your doctor's info and stuff but I'm on the NDIS and in the public health psychiatric system so they know all that stuff already.

Is it really anymore than just all that stuff combined into one thing? If the government wanted to track my movements I'm sure they could just use my phone and bank transactions and stuff right (although to be fair they would be wasting their time because my life is pretty unexciting on a good day).

So I get that I'm extremely apathetic about securing my private data, whereas others are the polar opposite, which in hindsight is probably the way to go. But I'm still confused as to the issue? Do people opposed to it not have a phone, email, tax file number, driver's licence and so on?

I think I must be completely missing the point of it right? I fully admit this isn't something I'm clued up on at all. So am I just too apathetic? Or just have no clue as to what it's all about?

Looks like you need to already have a digital identity before you can make a submission / complete the survey.

If you go back to debates surrounding the introduction of the Medicare card, you'll see the controversy involved (then) in making Australian identities (i.e. personal information) more centralised. The Medicare card was a concession to citizens' legitimate concerns about privacy and government control.

I reluctantly joined MyGov in order to try (unsuccessfully) to get Covid income support. The irony with all of that is, now that Centrelink ATO etc. have all of the information they require -- they still insist that you provide it again and again, into the future. Efficiency is clearly not what this system is all about.

I don't have a MyHealth record, for the reason that I'm 100% confident that the government cares not one iota for my health (centralised medical records would be a good idea in principle, but for the meddling hands of business, government, etc..). More power to the medical authorities, who keep records of your mental and sexual health for example, but less power to the actual patient in need of help.

The issue is the extent to which people are prepared to trust in authority. Some people crave it, evidently.

don't income support payments come via Centrelink and Service NSW (not sure what VIC has)?

You can't apply for Centrelink without MyGov. At least, not under lockdown conditions.

(I found that out after $77 in phone calls to Centrelink's 1300 number, at least one of which automatically terminated after about an hour's wait ...)

I don't have access to the documents I've uploaded to Centrelink. None can be retrieved, even sensitive identifying information will be held, indefinitely, on Centrelink's severs. (Government's justification for the digital upload of sensitive information: Covid-19).

None of this bodes well for a Digital ID card. Though do let me guess ... it'll be mandatory.

Does anyone believe the Feds can actually store the info collect securely... I dont based on prior experience.

Lol bad enough getting my son vaccinated and having them trying to tease a minors phone number and email out of me.... Which  proved to be a fail...

They've scored themselves a shit load of data without any of the usual disclaimers.

The Libs love the idea of a dystopian central database to be used and abused at their whims and readily weaponised

Like everything else they do, data storage will be outsourced and offshored. So depending on who they choose (I'm sure an LNP donor has an interest in a datacentre somewhere surely), storage may be reasonably secure. Or not. Probably the latter!

Is this part of the government's plan to make people verify their identity (in order to prove they are 18) before they can watch porn on the internet? Or is it a different thing?
