When caapi flowers? and is it self pollinating?

Recommended Posts

oh well, I have been getting impatient.

I have a pretty big , 4-5 year old plant, in the ground, gets plenty of light and has space to travel and climb on to. I thought it would flower earlier and easier.  I am in ~ zone 9

I even had an Argyreia flower at 18 months from seed, and that was in a friggin barrel!

Any clues for when it usually flowers?  Also about pollination, does it need a pair or its a self=pollinating?

Mine's flowering now, or starting to bud on the mid north coast nsw. Enjaytee put pics on facebook of his in full bloom now and he's in SEQ.

I have one younger plant that flowers more than the other and it seems to be on newer shoots that are furthest away from the base. I totally stripped one plant back that was strangling my blueberries a few weeks ago and it is shooting flower buds now as well as some new leaves. So after the winter soltice they seem to flower. At least here on the east coast in Australia. SEQ is about 350km north of me, and their flowers are a couple of weeks ahead. Nights here can get down to 5c and days 20c.

Apparently they are self polinating but I've never had seeds but have had them flower several times. Maybe I need more flowers or to try more hand pollinating, I've only tried it once.

4-5 years they should flower in the right conditions i.e not too cold and enough fertilizer. Have heard of cuttings flowering from 2 years. Maybe picking the leaves will encourage it to sprout new growth and it can focus on the flowers too. They drop a fair few leaves here in winter.

My vine was about the same size as yours @sagiXsagi

A few month back I gave it a prune taking off roughly 30%. I was also getting impatient with it not flowering so I started dumping chicken poo and bananas peels at the base of it. (I consume a lot of bananas) I tossed a couple of handfuls of potassium at the base of it too. Seems like a good prune and a heavy feed did the trick because not long after that, I noticed extra floral nectaries (efn’s) which I hadn’t seen on my caapi before. (Efn pics below)

2 weeks after noticing the efn’s I noticed flower buds forming. Whether there is any correlation between the efn’s and flowers showing up I’m not sure??

After another 2 weeks the buds started to open.

I now have a lot of flowers showing up but they are only on the side of the vine that gets exposed to full sun.
Interesting that @Buttsack also pruned his recently and it flowered not long after.

Anyway… I reckon hack it back and give it a solid feed.

p.s. I’m in the subtropics. :)

I reckon our latitude is just too low man, even if it's just by a few degrees. I've never seen one flower in Sydney, and Horus has the biggest oldest vine I've seen, he's an hour and a half north of me and his vine hasn't flowered in 15 or so years either.

Oh that’s cool. I didn’t realise caapi flowered. Mine hasn’t flowered ever. Is that the different colours refer the flower colours? I think I have cielo, yellow.

Feed it plenty of nutes and it might give you a show. Winter is when it's gearing up so you wanna feed it warm fert then.

I think flowers all look the same but the yellow refers to the colour of the inside of the vine. Split a thick piece of vine in half lengthwise and it will be yellow in the center.

Ah ok. I’ll make note to feed it next year. I haven’t cut any off yet. I think the thickest part is about a finger thick.

hmm, well i agree that, flowering caapi has to do with the photo period.

my garden is right bang at, the tropic of capricorn and none, of my banisteriopsis have ever flowered.

i might add that, the caapi going round 20 years ago, was proly less, eager to flower than, a recent plant making round's, which might be called "cielo".

cielo might flower more easely than the old strain...

sab member, have posted here, pics of there caapi flowers!!

my vine has been doing those nectaries for at least 2 -3 years.. maybe I should try the fert + prune  path.

still nothing by the way

just for the sake of posting, i want to add that caapi is amazingly drought hardy, they might loose all there leaves, but have survived long spells of dry, it's said.

It's not surprising, I dug one up two days ago and it had roots as thick as my thumb and bigger heading off in all directions for more than 6 feet radius, and they all had masses of fine fibrous roots hanging off them.

my peruvian black flowers like mad, but has yet to ever make a seed.  had about 1 acre of random scrub covered in it and a brazilian type which never flowers.  i am leaning towards they need a buddy to set seed.  anyone else confirm?

My Alicia anisopetala flowered last year but didn't appear to set seed, so maybe that one's dioecious, or just wasn't suitable conditions/no compatible pollinators available?
