Pedro99
Hi guys, I'd like to get started into cloning very soon and am hoping for suggestions on which method to choose. This will be for cloning a variety of plants like Kat for example, but also some trickier ones. I've seen some DIY aerocloner type things that look pretty nice. I'd have to find a good watertight tub somewhere as all the online builds are using "rubbermaid". The other option is jiffy pellets/pots in a storage tub in the shade outside. (I imagine this will work?) Anyone have fors/againsts/other recommendations? Cheers
Humboldt
My 2 cents: Submerging the cutting underwater when taking the final slice is the single best thing to do for success. When it comes out of the water aim to have a drooplet clinging to the cut. Then dunk into the cloning gel. Not required for succulents i don't think. I prefer using those blocks over jiffy pellets and a product called 'starter soak' is great for weedy plants, ect. Low EC and balanced nuts for good health from the get go. Available at hydro shops. Then into a heated/ humid environment like a 'heat n grow'. Edited February 21, 2020 by Humboldt
Pedro99
Cheers for the info man, when you say blocks are you talking about rockwool? I have a heat mat for tricho seedlings so could probably just run rockwool on the mat, inside a clear storage tub. Does cloning gel expire? I've got some from like 3 years ago... Humboldt
The blocks i use are call eazy plug they're fron the local hardware store. I give em a squeeze after soaking to get some air into them. Careful a large area of rockwool doesnt hold too much water, then get manky. Ive done 65/35 perlite/vermiculite too, but prefer the cubes, less algae. Ive given up on the 'thermomats' so uneven, i wonder if a moist piece of material would disappate the heat from the element more evenly and promote humidity. Much like the heat n grow does (see pic). Haven't tried this yet myself but have a worm farm blanket that looks a likely candidate.

migraineur
A glass of water under a fluorescent light or next to a window often works well when making clones via cuttings. Just change the water regularly. The good thing about striking a cutting in water is that you can see if the cutting is growing roots. If you don't have a mini growing chamber to keep in the humidity and/or heat when it's needed then soft drink bottles work well as cheap humidity domes. When you need to harden off the plant then you can take off the bottle cap before removing the bottle completely later on.
sagiXsagi
some basic aeropony kit would work great
migraineur
Isn't the chance of cloning khat really low? If I tried to clone it I'd probably try air layering. However, plants produce bulk seeds and they're easy to grow.

You can also use little propagation chambers that have vents on top of that heat mat. Bunnings and hydro shops have them.

In my experience, cloning red khat has proven hit or miss. A humidity chamber is essential -- although air layering works well, even for larger cuttings. I'm keen to try from seed again with this variety, as last time I had a germination rate of zero % -- possibly I left them too long before sowing. I took two small cuttings recently that rooted in Brunnings propagating sand (from Bunnings), kept inside a humidity chamber. Seems to have worked just fine.
