watched this place flood so many times last yr, 6inches up the house even , how the fk can kids play anything on waterlogged rice growing delta or the grass eh?

rang the repairs, they pay some dude £900 to lift a few feet of turf, lay a pipe, and concrete in a drain that's only low enough to stop the flood reaching the house... what about the fkn garden then eh?

so in the meantime I did what I could as and when I could digging a pit for the excess water .. and finally digging a canal as a temporary measure that still doesn't quite cut it fully but at least drains off the far end excavational dugout during a year of on and off archaeology

(found all those slabs and a path under about 7 inches of soil, nettles, brambles, bastard ivy and general rubbish from the last peep who lived here)

any clues on what could be done? , maybe tips on how to connect a gully or piping to the existing drain?

What would you do about it ?

here's some pics of how far I got so far..

dnno mate , maybe..., I'm closeish to one of uk's biggest rivers but you have to go waay downhill to get to it - I'm very much higher up the hill this end of of the valley than my gramps place where I started out when i first posted here... and that never floods, even closer to the river there too..

it only happens when it rains , and stays like it a while , if I could tap in to that new drain ....

maybe I can get the council to fix it a bit better ...

just figured I'd throw it out there n see what folk say :)

chat in a bit man

-edit- in fact I'm pretty sure it's only bad drainage cuz one of my school mates dad I used to toke with got me helping him out on his garden a couple of streets away,  a decade or so ago while he carved a concrete gully from , erm :3 concrete and then capped it off with some metal grid shit ..

i did all the soil and plant shit with his wife and he did all the sand, brick, slab, pickaxe n shit ...

he's very old, ill and grumpy as fk miserable old cantankerous bastard biker/triker/ex army bareknuckle boxer crusty infested arsehole that would probably not care for advice giving at the mo since outta hosp from another cancer cut out ... lol and can't be doing with the round of fks for disturbing his footie/greasemonkeying or whatever it might be at the time :) and after making hints, when bumping into them shopping; to maybe popping round to catch up just to see his "oh no" reaction face for shits n gigs..., and then not doing ... >>    ,,,...     although if I did get past those first few levels of the game to explain the predicament it might cheer him up :P to laugh at the misfortune only ...

Drainage can be tricky without levelling equiptment. It's hard to give accurate advice without first hand seeing it flood.

Id find the lowest point on your land, and the highest point the water reaches. Start by digging in a drain from said point a to b. But more so at the edge of the yard. Once you have an outlet at the lowest point you could start putting channels in to make it flow to the drain.

thanks dude , yeah i did all that , the highest point the water reaches is the large dugout -since I dug it out,

which is the digging point a...

i dug that great long canal to point b which is just next to the drain that was just put in not long ago

the pics show it in flood ... as bad as it gets since that drain was put in  ...

good to know I'm on the right track...

if only i could hack into that drain underneath the grate... and allow it to piss off into the main drains

You could get a hammer drill and masonary bits ;) but that might be frowned upon by the council.

or um... make a well?

If that is as bad as it gets

Expand drainage channel to atleast a foot across half a foot deep I believe it's deep enough jut needs to be twice as wide , create dry creek bed leading to self sufficient pond with an overflow direct to main drain or atleast off property , or even if the channel is enough go with that but I like fish  , little bit of landscaping effort (read a lot of hard digging) for an effective yard feature while providing rather effective drainage

the stones will prevent washing out of the dirt channel , if you need access to the main drain just lift it out and put in a grate or get a steel hole saw go straight through the plate attach piping connection baseplate Via any number of waterproof multipurpose silicones / epoxies etc if attached to an overflow pipe on pond it is rather self sufficient drainage .

even Just like you and zedo say  create drainage by chipping away  under one side of the plate with a hammer drill or sufficient tool for removing concrete and thus not damaging the plate , or just call the council or equivalent and give them the standoff situation eg : I'm gunna kill this drainage plate if my demands arnt met , now I want you to remove this drainage plate and install a grate , 10 million dollars and a helicopter on the roof to escape

I'm pretty medicated...lol...the water isnt coming out from under the retaining wall I can see there?

If it is would be better to cut it off close, than let it wet the ground then collect it, if that makes sense.

better mention it in case as I've worked on the rare combined systems here and know the UK has a few - you'll need to make sure what that "drainage system"  is .... is it stormwater only or is it combined sewer. Beware any backyard pit work on the sly if combined, cause its not pretty if there is a surcharge back through the pit:wink:

EDIT - " he's very old, ill and grumpy as fk miserable old cantankerous bastard ..."   ....sounds like me...lol

well, I didn't get to plant them in that ground but at least managed to avoid the wet feet flood until "something else to do about it" comes along...

well , fkn poor things are getting burnt (in uk - who would've figured it huh?) so I figured I'd try and incorporate some shade cloth protection after reading that as advice to loads of folk on here over the years, back when I "knew" the uk was no place for outdoor cacticals (!) - while i wait for the local snails to overtake the local council in fixing the flooding

[ before we all die of old prune-faced wrinkly age sporting zz top beards from all the waiting ] who apparently say it's waiting for a surveyor to assess after a fair bit of phone badgering which is the only way to get an answer these days it appears... and i dnno where else to post about the shade cloth so here will just have to fkn well do eh?
