I fluked this one when I was a noob .. fk knows how ... but anyway I just managed to do it the very next try... seeds only arrived a couple of days ago...

So yeah , I figured I'd capture the process from start to finish (hopefully not too soon a finish though)

hope it's useful to others trying to get this little beauty of a species going..

Germination (indoor)...

-1x pack of fresh mountain grown seeds from the hills of America

-Acacia mix (john innes loam50/50hort' gravel) or old cactus seed raising pot's contents

-pots > in this case 2" BEF and 40mm wattle tube, square (of course)

-4-5mm deep layer of sand

-one bog standard electric propagator/mini greenhouse

-tweezers for sowing optional

Add seeds to top of mix or "post" them into mini holes poked with some fine tip tweezers,

spray in and pop into: "the oven" gas mark: "switched on" and wait a couple of days...

- if you catch them early enough germinating on the surface , then the mini poked holes "tek" thing is a really nice thing to do I find

Good luck, hope they grow well. I've tried several times recently to grow them. 3 different lots of seeds from different people. They sprout super easy, get to around an inch high then die. Would love to know how to get them past that point.

Awesome!  I hope to replicate this shortly so I'm keen to follow your progress.

Also just out of curiosity, do you have a good seed vendor you'd recommend?

Mapacho I can send you some seeds if you like. I get mine from a Persian grocer, she's a very nice lady and is always happy to chat about traditional uses for esphand. I don't think she quite understands why I buy a kilo at a time though!

Little update pic on the wattle tubed ones ...

(ignore the wattlepot to the right, that has 2 old A' peregrina in it..., might ditch em soon and free it up for something else)

2017-02-27 14.40.03.jpg2017-02-27 14.40.25.jpg

Mapach and Zedo ... guys, I'll tell ya now , if you have an outdoor greenhouse that uses the soil beneath to grow from use that to sow ... it's dynamite.., [just a matter of pests controlling after that if applicable..]

or at least keep your pots of 'em in there if you don't plant in the ground in your greenhouse/s...

Easy as pie in the GH but my first time at this species I sowed in my homebuilt propagator and they outgrew it with a south facing window and a 12watt warm white CFL was the only supplimented lighting ... so I had to "spill over" into my gramps ole greenhouses at the time I had access to them down to size ... hardly had to do anything and they flowered well and set seed in the GH (maxed out around 62C mid-summer - unheated GH)

They also allowed me to neglect them until they looked dead and would regrow from dead looking-ness upon watering..  -like some kinda siesta they were taking or something :P

So anyways,.. the one I'd grown indoors performed perfect in a 2 litre pot when it went into the GH at about 12" tall and the others that were sown much later in the GH didn't have time to set seed ... maybe getting grow bags for tomatoes either side of them didn't help,... which i think stunted them significantly with being too wet and over fed from the runoff..

This year they're going outside unprotected if I get that far..

and [in theory so far] will hibernate in winter to return the following year...

Mother nature does a better job at these than Brother/Sister nature ...mostly

I do have a mild electric current running through the soil and plants in the homebuild prop with reptile timer/

day\night stat {slight shock if you touch the plants} - which has better lighting now too ,..2017-02-27 15.08.05.jpg2017-02-27 15.08.24.jpg

However, this lot were started in the bog standard prop2017-02-27 15.08.50.jpg but will be going in the homebuilt soon as poss' (not sure on a timescale - will just go by feel and the thread will reveal timescale after the events i suppose)

Either way good luck fellow plantkin and by all means let us know how it goes eh? ,... welcome to post progress here if you like :)  or make a thread on it and send us the link plz.

my peganums love sun and hate dutch cold rainy weather

they also seem to have a thing against spider mites and light deprivation that's why i keep chopping them down to get that lush green look i like about them :D

this is just their first year since germination tho, supposedly these plants hold their shit together outside in the jungle once they get big enough

ime this is a xerophyte that resists cultivation... a bit... there are some populations in greece it seems!

I had planted a couple peganum at the margin of a patch of levaner, absinth and origanum plants,  I was not really monitoring it, it did repsrout for 2 more years, but I didnt ever see it flower... haven't checkedit recenty and sure the crawling nature of the patch make it necesarry to sarch for the peganum plant pulling the branches of the origanum and absinth up... lol.

I also had an earlier experience in a pot ... again I had trouble keeping it alive in summer but it came back 2 years after that, resprouting in a pot was in autumn  I remember...

These type of plants seem to me wanna be left alone somewhat...

ok i found 2 pics of outdoor Peganum in the unheated greenhouse from back then ,

you could technically say that's indoor but; as it wasn't in the home I kinda saw, and still do see, it as outdoor

I found some seeds I still have. So I'm gonna give them another go. Should the soil remain wet? Or should it be on more the dry side?

I found some seeds I still have. So I'm gonna give them another go. Should the soil remain wet? Or should it be on more the dry side?

on the dryer side of very wet at first (not quite as wet as my way of tricho seed sowing but close and without the saran wrap/shrink wrap/cling film)

... = water 1st time after/during sowing until it runs from the bottom of the pot/seed tray.. easiest with a sprayer in a small pot so as not to strew seeds around from where you cast them too much,.. if it matters to you.

It's surprising how little moisture they need tbh,.. what i watch for is them swelling and taking on a reddish chocolate brown colour ,... this (I believe) tells ya they're alive, swollen and ready to do their thing on the surface.., which is useful as a 1st sowing test,... i might hydrate the soil/pots in the mornings if they look to be drying out.. but not , if not.

Once you establish their viability; a second try could be just beneath the surface since you already know they'll work..

I keep them fairly well hydrated/moist but not sodden after they've sprouted cotyledons.

As the seedling progresses into it's true leaves, gradually move toward allowing it's soil to dry out between very infrequent waterings in smallish increments...,

and neglect it after the 4-6 inch height mark until it looks thirsty- or until you get a feel for it I guess from how long the soil is left bone dry once that bone dryness is achieved,..

If its in a GH in serious heat at this height, water is a lot more appreciated ,.. but if its in the ground it will send some amazingly long tap root and eventually will never need watering (at least in uk anyway)

It may well benefit from waterings from beneath..., but as far as I recall, I watered them in the past from above the soil.

I think its something crazy like 8 metres down that the tap root goes... which as you can imagine , is probably a desert survival technique.

You can watch for ages until it looks like it's really begging for water before a watering... and even if it goes "too far" without watering it seems able to regrow from a very very dead looking thing...

which is nice if patience isn't too much of a problem and lol , so long as it is just playing dead.. and not actually dead :3

but I did take some shots of temps in the reg prop and the ixtla' - and until now forgot to post them too :3

My rue seeds have just sprouted, they appear to be taking on a red-ish colour but haven't grown much in the past week or two.. any advice on what I should do to give them the best chance of success? they're currently outdoors

my best guess at good advice would be to leave em to it if they're outside

don't forget this is only my second go round at them and will be the first time outdoors with no protection just bare to the elements..

but I'm defo not expert yet, just flukey so far.., if I can capture the fluke this time round, maybe we can pick apart what it is that happens to be working and stuffs by going back and seeing what did and didnt work was the plan of the thread really,.. that, and for a workable record to track back on if necc' down the line...

... reddish foliage is probably their version of sunscreen although I haven't seen it before on them as far as I recall

,.. have you any pics?

as a second thought, ... perhaps they're catching up underground ?

I think I do recall wondering why the growth seemed to have stopped i think it was around 2011/12 ... but I was just so busy tryna do everything at once back then, as usual :3 add to that a 50% good 50% bad memory ... : /

but yeah that pause in their growth feels familiar.. but more at a larger size stage in their lives than "just sprouted" ...

I hope there aren't any bugs munching them from beneath or anything...

Either way, well scored so far mate,

I feel like chucking a few seeds outside after reading that,

in fact I think I will just transfer the sproutlings into a bigger pot while their roots are short enough..-mix consists of gritty kitty litter, sand, john innes loam, old cactus soil mix, small handful of bone dry coir crushed to dust.., then sprayed in

2017-03-01 12.22.46.jpg2017-03-01 12.22.54.jpg2017-03-01 12.28.03.jpg2017-03-01 12.28.14.jpg2017-03-01 12.37.46.jpg2017-03-01 12.38.04.jpg

they've been put back in the bog standard prop to face the higher temps out of fear of

maybe over-wetting as a just in case,.. they'll be back in the homebuild in a few hours probably though..

I did chuck a load of old seed out a couple of weeks ago and some in the above pots but they weren't germinating indoors so bought more seed..., which worked , and initiated me to post about it,...so guessing the ones outside won't work from the old batch either..

but I might outdoor sow in a month or so... as possible backup in case transplants fail.

.... ok , arm twisted (such a sunny warm day)

: sowed outdoor 01/03/17 :)  finger's X'd I'll get to keep this pad after april-ish to see if they work..

I sprinkled the seed on the surface so there's quite a few seedlings, some red and some green. I have two separate trays in different spots so I don't think bugs will be an issue. Will grab some pics tomorrow and post them here, I've never had much luck with Rue so fingers crossed they come good

hmm , they look like they're in good nick to me mate,

I didn't realize you meant outside in a container, I was thinking directly in the ground to suggest leave em to it....,

I dnno what to suggest other than keep doing whatever it is you already did, they look well ..

erm,,, hydrate if they look start looking wilty?... :3 whats the weather like there? does it like to rain enough to save you watering? is it likely to batter it down and perhaps necessitate a little bit of shelter for the pots?

maybe you might wanna very very carefully prick them out and pot on cuz they might compete each other to death ,

i think that's what happened to most of mine in a seed tray a few yrs ago so i lost a few transplanting back then..... but the survivors went in the pot, eventually there was only 2 left for a while, then 1 grew back from virtually dead foliage to eventually flower,,

i was really really super gentle with transplanting this time and they seem to be ok

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today ~I had a couple more sprouts in the BEF pots 2017-03-02 16.44.34.jpg i hadnt watered them , but i sprayed the latest sprouts just before taking the pic to wash the soil/sand from them for the photo , and only sprayed two pumps of the spray

Also I lightly "sanded" the surface of the transplant pot .. 2017-03-02 16.44.50.jpg

which, so far, was a success..

Awesome thanks man, I was thinking today I should pot them out so they're not competing. There's plenty of seedlings there so I might transplant the healthiest looking ones and leave the rest to do their thing... hopefully I'll get a couple of healthy plants from one of them. Temps are high 20's / low 30's atm, no rain in sight but I've been keeping them moist
