HamiltonBoy Posted December 27, 2016 recent trip to Kenya I discovered muguka . I still do not know the scientific name for the plant, but it is a stimulant that has replaced khat, because it's a fast growing shrub and is reputedly more potent than khat. Locals say it's not khat but I thought it was just the top leaves. What variety of catha e. Do you think it is? Cheers

chronic Posted December 28, 2016 This is Khat. These are the tips of the plant which are strongly potent. Quote:Muguka is the top leafy part of the Khat plant, which according to the people from Meru county, is cheaper and more effective (steam) than the original and more expensive part of the plant. http://www.nairobigossips.com/2015/10/you-thought-kenyans-eat-muguka-wait.html And here: muguka aka ketepa, these are the leaves that are cut from the same tree that produces miraa.http://www.jamiiforums.com/threads/miraa-khat-mirungi.40641/page-3
waterboy 2.0 Posted December 29, 2016 (edited) its catha, different market products though.... leaves vs tips/shoots In all honesty it all sounds like a marketing war between growers and how there is competition in the market EDIT - "The hardcore enthusiasts of miraa dismissed it at first branding it a drug for the poor and uncultured. Selling Muguka was beneath the ideals that The Meru and Somali cartels controlling the Miraa trade held dear. To them stocking Muguka in their business premises was equivalent to convincing a gold trader that bronze could add value to his existing trade. Thus it was rhetorically thrown to the streets to be sold by the lower caste hawkers who could not be allowed to touch miraa a drug that the angels bequeathed to the cultured people. It was beneath the miraa traders to sell leaves or introduce the harsh taste of Muguka to their privileged customers.
