Sowing seeds

Recommended Posts

I would leave the lid off and dry it all out a bit, like overnight, then mist with a peroxide solution, I think around 1 - 1.5.% is the go, vent the chamber every day or 2 after that

spraying 1% H2O2 will kill your mold without hurting your baby cactus

I like your little greenhouse, very cute :)

Edit, opps didnt see your post DB

I let them air out and I'll have to go find some H2O2. Is that just bleach?

I've used 3% and s little higher h2o2 with no negatives. It does turn the pumice rock brown after repeated treatments but this seems to be just a visual thing not to the detriment of the seedlings.  Seedlings 2-3 months old when treated.

Ive also just tried phosphorous acid to counter rust spots, will see how that goes

I've got seedlings doing very well in my humidity control chamber with the RH maintained around 60%. If you have more mold issues, try lowering the RH by a lot and letting the seedlings grow that way.

In my limited observations, giving seedlings heat seems much more important than humidity beyond a certain minimum.

All that said, your cacti look pretty great. Are you planning to graft some? It's much easier than it looks.

Yeah I figure once most have sprouted I'll have to start hardening them up outside the growbox. I'll give them another 2-3weeks I'd say.

never thought of grafting any. Besides making cool looking cacti, is there any other benefit to grafting?

Grafting speeds up the growth considerably mate:wink:

You can graft them (say onto pereskiopsis) for a while to put on a significant growth spurt, and degraft  them later on and root them , or regraft them onto a larger and longer lasting stock to keep up a faster growth rate (like a trich).

It can make some cacti look "bloated" though.

I'll have to give it a go. How big should the cacti be before I graft anything? And how old/big should my new babies be before I take them out of the greenhouse and let them experience the outside world?

So it's been a while since some critter ripped up my cacti bubs. But I think I salvaged more than I thought. I lost all the LW though :(
