spooge Posted April 14, 2016 Could someone please advise - If a computers mother board is said to be dead, is all the info on the computer saveable? Kinda after the fact as the computer has been fixed, mother board replaced, not a cheap excersize The shop that fixed it said all the info is saveable, and yes it's all still on the computer Am a bit sceptical as I know nothing bout the innards of a computer n am wondering if I got ripped off or if the info on a computer is on the hard drive which has nothing to do with the mother board Thank you
2XB Posted April 14, 2016 You are onto it man, motherboard is the main part, or computing part, hard disks etc plug into tje motherboard so is separate component, so yes the data would be saveable!

at0m Posted April 14, 2016 What doublebenno said. Motherboard is the "mother" that connects all the "children" components together. Those hard drives can be plugged-in (internally or through an external enclosure) to any computer and the data will be readable.
spooge Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) Thanks DB n Atom puts my skepitcalish and cynical head at rest. Good to know man I made sure I deleted all the hardcore zoo porn off the thing before I put it in to be fixed. The avatar is a pic I found online when I was having a goofy face txt war with a friend Poor guy needs to see a dentist real bad Edited April 14, 2016 by olive
ColinO'Scopy Posted April 14, 2016 I thought for a minute it might have been a selfie, relieved it's not after your builder battles. 'Whats red and bad for your teeth - A brick.' (As someone posted in a recent shitty joke contest) FYI. Even if your hard drive shits itself there are downloadable recovery routines which can recover some data usually, or put the drive in a ziplock sandwich bag and chuck it in the deep freeze overnight, then use it before it thaws out, sometimes works. 2XB Posted April 14, 2016 Is that last bit legit? I got an old HD here from 10yrs back that won't start... Guess I got nothing to loose lol If your hard disk doesn't power up only option would be to use a HDd exactly the same and take the board off and put it on the fuxt disk.. . u may be lucky and get those 128kbit MP3s back ;-)
SJack Posted April 14, 2016 Hey Olive they would have loved all the 'deleted' Zoo porn. I accidentally formatted my wedding photos, all my kids child hood pictures and some other memorable videos one night after I had a few. Obviously an accident. I formatted the incorrect drive.....FAARK!. Almost cost me my testicles. Anyways after i calmed down and sobered up in the morning i got a the hard drive to a data recovery centre and they restored them back to life. Apparently you have to format your hard drive several times (like a dozen) before your 'zoo' videos will be truly deleted. Oh yeah I also deleted $500 bucks from my wallet to get the photos back. El Presidente Hillbillios Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) my mate that works at IBM, told me that their old hard drives with commercial info on them get physically smashed too bits and then set into blocks of concrete as there is no way to ever delete things forever Edited April 14, 2016 by El presidente Hillbillios

waterboy 2.0 Posted April 14, 2016 I've collected magnets from drives smashed by the gov and university. When they feel the need to smash em they do it good. Makes you wonder though....
at0m Posted April 14, 2016 All big companies that don't want their old drives pilfered for data do it, waterboy it's the only way to 100% ensure nobody can read them afterwards

SayN Posted April 14, 2016 backup your data people - especially the irreplaceables like photos. just burn them onto a dvd or get an external hdd - it's cheap. I have used an application called rstudio to recover files from hdd's that are reported unformatted or similar by windows or ios. best feeling ever giving someone back their lost data (and best $70 i ever spent).
